finally found “Facing Future”, had lost the tape i made of a friends CD, so i bought the CD and listerned to it again after a few years of not being able to listen – was so wonderful to hear it again – Hawai’i ’78 always makes me cry, there is such longing and beauty in that song – it seems to speak for indigenous cultures everywhere. Thanks for having this website and honoring his memory so beautifully –

Aloha —

I did not know of IZ until his rendition of “Over The Rainbow” from a movie soundtrack became a hit. What an angelic voice he had! I was hooked the first time I heard it! It is such a sad sad thing that he is no longer with us, but I know that he is in a better place, and someday we all will hear him singing again when we go where he is now. IZ did not just leave us with nothing, no, he left us all with his music, and his music will never grow old and we will never tire of it. The gift he gave us all is eternal. We all have truly been blessed by IZ.

Brudda IZ brings me back to the beach where I met my best friends on Big Island- Brudda Kawelu Medieros and his Ohana`. It is with an Aloha thought that IZ’s music brings a “mahalo” to my lips for the land and people of the Pacific Kings and Queens. “How would he feel- would his smile be content o crying?” “And then yet you’ll find Hawaii”. Brudda IZ sings to every heart. Our people believe that no one actually dies until there is no one left to remember him. I share the music, the islands, and ‘Aloha’ with my children and Grandchildren. It is shared both on the beaches and in the mountains when we are there. And all year long in the words, history, and music of the great Pacific people who, after all the greed and hate has been piled upon them, still know how to find the true heart of some visitors and take them in as family for the rest of time. My Ohana and myself are blessed by the kindness of Hawaii. We are humble before this friendship. “Don’t be scared- there’s people here for help you”. Brudda IZ still shares these words. In my heart- he still lives in my heart. Mahalo Brudda- mahalo Hawaii.

Bring me back to your sand and lava- I am humble- Aloha- Frank Medicine Wolf Springer– Pink Kahuna

Iz you are Hawaii in all that was and will ever be. After all my travels there it is my misfortune to have never met you but i was graced with the opportunity of hearing you. God but graces this world with a rare person only once in many a year and that one was you. Although at times the road may have been rough you left a beauty more precious then a gem, but like a gem you and your music while survive the sands of time eternal. Aloha Brudda IZ

Learning to play the ukulele has brought me to IZ, and IZ has taught me the power of the fragile. Both the music and the man. Powerful. Fragile. Co-existing for only a short time in reality, but forever in memory…

I’ve heard the voice of an angel on an episode of ‘E.R’ in May or June of 2002. The voice of Israel was that angel. When I heard his version of ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow’ has sent chills up my spin and tears in my eyes. His voice had burned a hole in my memory forever. God rest his soul and his talent. My thoughts and prayers will be forever with you.

Thank you Israel.

I would just like to say that Iz’s over the rainbow song is an excellent piece. I have heard many of his others, but i must say, that one is the very best. I have been learning more about him and who he was, and what a great person he was. I would have liked to see him in concert or something here in Massachusetts, U.S.A. It’s a shame that he died long before i heard any of his music. thanks for the music Iz.. peace from Cape Cod

As a singer, I find it truly inspiring to hear an artist whose voice seems to flow straight from heaven into a man´s vocal cords and out from his mouth. Israel Kamakawiwo was one such artist blessed from the heavens to sing without struggle, without fear … just opening his mouth and letting his soul take care of all the rest. Israel, wherever you are, thank you for this glimpse of heaven.

Hi,

I am a big fan of Bruddah Iz. Is was down for weeks when I heard of his death. I know it’s not normal for a swiss guy listening hawaiian music, but his lyrics and his emotions in the songs were more than just music. When I visited Oahu I first began to understand his songs really.

I want to send my greetings to his wife and children who were left behind too early.

As a thirty-something adult, I think I’ve been put close to tears less than five times. So when something does, I respect it’s power to touch me so deeply. IZ’s “Over the Rainbow” (a song I’ve never liked) caught me off guard with a massive sucker punch to the heart. New to screen writing, I will find a spot to hightlight his music in a motion picture. All that I’ve read echos his wonderous spirit. It is no wonder he was able to effect me. I hope his family will long be remembered, respected and cared for with the honor they deserve. Thank you IZ.

I’ve never heard of Israel, until Nov,10,2003,when his song was plyed at the end credits to the movie “Meet Joe Black”and they speeded that up so they could get onto the next Program. So I took it upon myself to find his music and the song,Over the Rainbow. After searching extensivly I had finally found it.It was amazing his voice was a true gift. What I had not known was that this amazing singer had passed away.Immediately I broke into tears, for I had discovered a new artist “who at the first moment I heard his voice”was deeply moved. My girlfriend is sleep right now but when she wakes I plan to introduce her to Israel, and I would like to end this by giving thanks to the man, that is the voice Israel Kamakawiwo’ole

Hearing Israel’s rendition of “over the rainbow” on a television commercial, I promptly sush my children while briefly enjoying his moving and soothing voice. I recently listened to more of this rendition on MSN’s website in a portrayal of pictures of American life. It was there I learned that the heart warming tune was more than a mere tune and of Isael. Now, I find in a web search that he has past on. While sad, I am greatful to have experienced his music. Thank you, Israel.

It took a while to find out who recorded it and I will now make a point of listening to more of his music. I have raved about Over the Rainbow to anyone who will listen, and those who don’t are missing an amazing experience.

My wife and I were blessed recently on a vist to Hawaii and discovered the music of Bruddah IZ.

We loved the music played on the radio, but had no idea who sang it. As we were leaving the state, my wife happened across it and we have played it every day since our return.

What a gift to the world. We were very, very sad to hear of his passing when I did a web search.

A beautiful man from a beautiful place.

She had heard “Somewhere…” at a friend’s wedding in 2002 and she’s been a fan of Iz’s ever since… It proves that true beauty is timeless! Mahalo!

After hearing the rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World, I just had to buy a ukulele. Since I play guitar it is not a hard instrument whatsoever but I cannot find good chord voicings that go with IZ’s version. If someone knows where I can find the ukulele tabs for this song I would appreciate that. Thank you to whomever replies and thank you IZ for the song!

In September of 2003, my husband and I visited Hawaii for our 28th wedding Anniversary renewing our vows. While on the big Island we bought some CD’s of Israel. I was so moved and amazed at his voice I could not stop playing his songs all the time we were there and now at home I love to play them. May his memory live on as long as there is Hawaii.

I have to keep coming back to this site to read how others have been effected by this man. I only found Iz and his music two years ago (alas! too late to go see him!) and ever since I first heard his voice I barely want to listen to anything else. I have all of his and the Makaha Son’s CD’s, and I hope MT Record Co. will find some more recordings to release. His music touches my soul- maybe I am Hawaiian at heart- Istill feel as sad about his dying as if he was my real brother. Crazy, huh? I miss him! And I’m not the only one. I guess some kind of special love shines through in his voice that we really need now in this world. Greetings and mahalo to his family, from a “sister” in Oregon.

I heard his song, “Somewhere Over The Rainbow,” and I searched for it. Then one day I heard it again, but this time his name was mentioned. Well, I sought his CD which I haven’t received yet. Because of his songs and they way he sang it I want so badly to learn how to play the ukelele. Not and easy task for a senior citizen, but Brother IZ is an inspiration. I would have loved to see him in concert. I love the way he told a young person to put Jesus in their heart. Wow, and now IZ is talking with Jesus in person. My deep sympathy to his loving family.

Bruddah IZ, what can I say about him. Well, I know for sure that his music will live on in our hearts and minds. How can we forget such a talented and ingenious human being? Never! I know I won’t. He has touched me in so many ways both emotionally and spiritually. I do believe he had a heart of gold and a soul full joy. His music came from his heart and spoke of true gladness and that is what I’ll truly miss. Last but not least, he is an inspirational motivator. Trust me! “Well Uncle, we are going to truly miss your smile, your voice, your words of spiritual joy and happiness, and of course, your music of love. Coming from the gang in Miloli’i-Big Island & Omaha, Nebraska, SUPE!!!” Until we meet again, A Hui Hou!

This week I returned from a vacation to the islands of Oahu, Kauai and Maui. In a small shop in Kauai I found a cd of IZ: Facing Future, I had heard his song somewhere over the rainbow on the radio the day before and was happy to find this song on this cd. I love the song and also the songs Hawaii 78 and Ka Huila Wai. Later on Maui I also got the cd’s Alone in IZ world and n Dis Life. I love them all. His music brings me back to Hawaii whenever I play his cd’s. Now I returned home and found out he is no longer alive. I’m sad to hear this. By the way, I’m from the Netherlands and had not heard about IZ music overhere. Great to hear songs in Hawaiian language. I only knew the standard traditional Hawaiian music before.

I have lived in Dallas, TX since 1980 but am originally from Hawaii. Israel’s music is truly beautiful and is touching in such a way that it makes me ache inside. His music brings back many bittersweet memories of my life in Hawaii. On Thanksgiving 2002, my sister who lived in Hawaii was brutally murdered by her boyfriend and I especially chose the song, “In This Life” to be played at her memorial. To this day, I can harldy bear to hear the song because it’s so incredibly painful. It brings back so many memories of my beautiful sister, whose life was cut so short. She loved this song so much and was such a huge fan of his as I am now. I also am a recently baptized Christian and when I read his bio, it was so wonderful to find out that he too was baptized before his death. One day in Heaven, I will be able to meet this wonderful man and reunite with my sister and all loved ones who have gone on ahead. This is a great website–keep up the great job!

I was first introduced to Bruddah IZ in May of this year (2003) when I visited Maui for the second time. I cannot believe I had never heard of him before. I live in Oregon and every time I hear his music, I think of my favorite beach on Maui, the seven sacred pools near Hana, and the general feeling you get when you visit Hawaii and go beyond the tourist attractions. I wish the best for his family and hope the world never forgets such an extraordinary talented man.

Peace be with you IZ!

Dear Marlene:

My wife, nine year-old son and seven year-old daughter just returned from a two week stay on the north shore of Kaua’i. (We rented a house on Tunnels Beach as we have done seven times over the last twelve years or so.) I was amazed that it took us this long to discover IZ’s music. We bought his CDs and DVDs and we’re now devoted fans.

My daughter loves IZ’s “Over the Rainbow”. My favorite is without a doubt “Hawai’i 78”: very moving and very powerful! It has certainly helped make us aware of the plight of the Hawaiian people with all of its beauty and tragedy.

What a voice!

I feel kinda stupid to be writing this when you all were fans for years. We just got back from the big island and we picked up Alone in Iz World because of Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Dumb as this may sound it may change this old mans life. Years ago I considered the members of the Travelers Three to be friends. They made a huge difference in a young mans life (Thanks Charlie and Pete). Now another Hawaiian has spoken to my soul and we will have to see where it leads me. Mahalo Brudda Iz

Not only has it become my favorite cd but it has also become the favorite of my 3 small kids ages 8,7,&3. They beg me to play it. I am sure it will be worn out before long. I am a 13 year old teen male, who was born in Hawai’i. I lived there up until 2 years ago, when i had to move to california, due to unforseen circumstances. I have been a huge fan of Iz for about 5 or 6 years. Every time i hear one of his songs, i think about all the great times i had in hawai’i growing up, and when he died in 1997, i was shocked. My favorite song is ‘Hawaii 78’, because i am extreamly saddened by the whole story about how the last queen of hawaii was dethrowned, it was queen Liliokalani (forgive the spelling, i know it’s not spelled correctly.). anyways, i only got to see him once, at the ‘Kings Shops’ on the island of Hawaii. I love his music, and i love hawaii, and i love all my friends there, and, if they’re reading this, especially Courtney, sorry i left. I REALLY miss Hawai’i.

Today I discovered the gentle soul that sings the song I have been in LOVE with for many years… Iz Kamakawiwo’ole. The song is his renidition of Somewhere Over The Rainbow/What a Wonderful World. I also discovered your wondeful website about him. I wish I would have known about Iz when he was still with us. I have fallen in Love… Universal Love… with him. He must have been so amazing to be near… truly an Angel sent here to us for a little while. I pray he is resting in peace and happy… with his family and his brother Skippy. What an amazing human being he was… I wish we would of had more time with him. Maybe I could have had a chance to hear him sing in person… I would have come to Hawai’i to see him gladly. I ordered his cd Facing Future and his DVD Island Music Island Hearts. Everytime I play my song from his CD and sing it with him… he is with me and I feel his presence. I think each one of us does when we sing with him… I think he comes to us to continue teaching us about Universal Love for each other and I guess as he would say Ma’holo… Love in Hawai’ian… I think. Sure makes me wish I was Hawai’ian. I live my life in the way of the Hawai’ian Love… which makes it very difficult to live near other people of the rest of the world. I do not relate to them… I relate to people like Iz. There is no way to describe that kind of Love and no way to truly put it into words… it just has to come out of you… and be witnessed. Those of us that live it… know it when we see it and share that special kinship with the other person. Iz manifested that special love… it simple flowed from him… and into everyone else around him. My heart is broken that he is not here and I miss him terribly even though I never knew of him before. I guess I miss what I know I have lost… but it is only from this material world. Because I truly believe like I said before, that he comes to each one of us that know of his special kind of Love. I wish I knew Hawai’ian words to say to you, but I do not. All I can say is God Bless to you and I hope that you were fortunate to have known Iz. I will continue to spread his Love and beautiful music to all I meet and know.

Aloha and Mahalo… my Ohana

I’ve been to Hawaii 5 times. Each time I make sure I buy one of Israel’s CDs. I think I have all of them, now. If not, I’ll get them when I return.

God bless his memory!

Like many others, I’m a better-late-than-never fan if IZ’s songs. There’s so much in his music that moves me, esp. the more traditional Hawaiian songs, but I can’t explain why. My favorite, Hawaii 78.

I visited Hawaii for the first time in 2002 and found Iz’s music plying on the radio. I was so impressed that I had to go out and find it. I ws later shocked to hear of his passing and lamented and grew sad over the great loss. He truly IZ great and his music will live on forever. Thank you for continuing to share his legacy.

my brother got cancer the spring of 1996, he moved to the hospital where he stayed until he passed on august 3rd. However “Facing Future” was in the CD player and played many times each day. He never got sick of it and it made him feel happy. It was the first time I had been exposed to Bruddah IZ and I was hooked. Two years ago I met my now fiance, after two weeks of dating he played, “In this Life”in the car on the way to an adventure race, he said it put him in the mood. I was touched by the lyrics and the beautiful song. When Mark prosed to me he included the lyrics of “In this Life” in a book he made for me. It’s such an amazing song and touches us both so deeply. Thank you Bruddah IZ

Hello there!

My name is Thiago and I’m from Belo Horizonte, Brasil!

Since I’ve listened the Iz’s music for the first time (in the end of 2002), I became totally surprised. The first music I’ve heard was the version of “Somewhere over the rainbow” and, at that moment, I didn’t believe that I was listening such a beautiful song! Wow! I felt my heart filling itself with pure poetry, extracted from the feelings of a man that was singing with your own life! I will never forget that first good surprise…

So, I would like to congratulate the creation of this homepage to honor a singer that, even though I didn’t meet him in life as a human being, conquested my most sincere admiration with your eternal music and presence!…

Yours truly, Affectionately, Thiago.

Aloha kakou!

Iz’ music, his lyrics, voice and his feelings for the kama’aina reached me at the other side of the world (germany). Because Iz, I try to understand the hawai’ian language and culture.

Once, I will come and visit his native land to feel the spirit, which I only can hear for now.

Wish you all the best and many fine times with his music…

Thank you for creating this site for all of us who found out about “Bruddah IZ” after his death. His music is wonderful and helps me keep my own life in perspective — in ways that only his music seems to do. As I write this on July 12th, 2003 (anniversary of his ashes being scattered) — I think about how many lives he has touched and has yet to touch — even people like me who have never been to Hawaii. Thank you — Ken (Jensen Beach, FL)

Never heard of this singer before watching the Sean Connery movie ‘Finding Forrester’. In that movie, I remembered hearing a unique version of ‘Somewhere over the rainbow backed with Armstrongs What A Wonderful World’. What a song, what an atmosphere created. Funny that almost 2 years later I heard the same song in one of the last (for that season)episodes of my favorite series ‘ER’. The very sad part, with this song making it almost impossible to watch (emotionally seen). Fortunately the internet makes it possible to find the song, find the singer and find more of his songs. I’t’s very sad to find out that this great singer passed away before I even had the chance of knowing his music. IZ: thank you for the wonderful song I talked about. Hope to learn and hear a lot more of your music the coming years. A person is dead when he’s forgotten. Won’t forget about you, that’s for sure ! Rest in Peace…

I just recently discovered the beauty of the music of Bruddah IZ and had to have one of his albums. That apparently is the situation with a lot of people, as I have read similar comments in serveral places. At least he was able to enjoy success during his lifetime, but I suspect that his fame is greater now than maybe at any other time. If I was banished to a desert island with only a few favorite albums, one would have to be an “IZ” album; perhaps more than one.

Hi,I know this a late entry, today being 06-28-03, but I wanted to let you know how speacial Israel’s music and spirit have been to me. When I discovered IZ’s music in 2001, I was saddened to learn he had “moved on” to the next life. Being a musician myself, it was very easy to get into his music and message. Listening to his music everyday in my truck on my way to work, when I’m feeling depressed or low, IZ is there to lift my spirits. Today a local record shop had two of Israel’s DVDs from the Mountain Apple company and buying and taking them home, I saw him for the first time. He taught me so much and the music, beautiful. I was fortunate to find them. Here in San Antonio, Texas, Tejano music is king and Hawaiian music is rare. When I learned of IZ’s “moving on”, I was sad because I wanted so much to meet him but I guess when my time comes “to go”, I know I’ll get that chance, give him a hug, and say thanks. May God bless you and keep you…..

Love,

Juan A. Vallejo.

I never knew the man personaly but his music has touched me. I heard in one of his live CD’s that if nothing else he wanted to spread love and peace through out and leave somting behind. IZ has done that, he has left an impression on many people myself being one of them. Though I live in the mainlands I can still feel Hawaii when I hear his music. He is definatly an artist I will never forget.

I discovered the beautiful and lyrical voice of Iz during my first visit to the Islands four years ago. I love to hear him sing, I feel a very definite connection to Hawaii and the spirit of Islands when I hear his voice and listen to the words and their meanings. What a blessing that he was with us as long as he was.I’m sure his spirit still sings. I know it does in my heart. Listening to his music brings me immediately back to the beautiful shores of Hawaii, especially Kaua’i no matter where I am in the world.

I heard the Rainbow/Wonderful World song on the radio for the first time the other day and I loved it so much I had to hear it again. As I was singing along in my car it somehow touched me in a way no other song has before. Always loved Hawaian Music, never thought I would be lucky enough to visit the Islands, then a trip to Maui. Paradise. Heaven on Earth. May my Soul now Jump to Heaven from Black Rock, there is no place heaven or earth like Hawaii. Then, a revalation, IZ… Bruddah IZ… His Music grabbed me, wrapped me around his finger, lead me above. I saw his CD’s everywhere, Who was this Big Man ??? Who was this IZ ??? I heard the Music and put it all together in a dream. I had to hear more. . . And here I am, Paying tribute to a Manb who enhanced my life, to an Island I am strangely drawn to. To a people who were wronged, and to the possibility of setting it all right. This man is amazing. The love and compassion that he had towards others was awesome. I am deeply saddened by his death. Sometimes I want to pretend that it’s not true, that he is still alive spreading his aloha to the people of the world.

My wish is that everyone has the opportunity to listen to Iz’s music and learn to love and except others with a deep appreciation of human life as he taught me to, to be able to see the world through this giant of a man’s eyes.

Collcting music of the world I incedently came to songs of Isreal Kamakawiwo’ole. Hawaii 78 was the first song I knew by bim. Sice then I became one of the biggest fans of him. From that time on, I only hear his music as well as the songs of Makaha Sons. As well I am now very intersted in his life and the country. I am very sorry, we can’t hear any new songs now. IZ has done a lot for Hawaiian music and his country. Good people leave us too early.

My wife and I just came back from a two week celebration in Hawaii of our 45th anniversary.

During this time there, I first heard the beautiful music of IZ. It lingered with me throught the many hours of travel back to the states. Now back home, I began my quest to learn more about IZ and his music. I am both very happy and very sad. First, to have found IZ in the first place and experience his messages of love and his beautiful music. And secondly I am so very sad that IZ is now gone and I didn’t have the opportunity to enjoy his love and music in person. Of this I am truly sad..

But the bonus is to have eventually found him in the first place. He and his love and music will always be playing in my heart.

Mahlo, Bruddah IZ, I believe now the great spirits of the universe are enjoying your presence, your love and your music.

I will forever be greatful for knowing of you.

When I saw the ER episode with this GENTLE man’s version of “Over the Rainbow” in it, I knew I wanted a copy of the song. My health is not the best, and I’ve asked that this be played at my services. My sister helped me track down the recording via the internet, and I immediately ordered the “Facing Future” CD from the Hawaiian Music Store. I find his voice so soothing and beautiful that, were it not for financial constraints, I’d probably order all of his CDs. Thank you for the time and songs you so generously gave all of us.

I’m here in England right now, missing home more than ever. All I have is my uke and my local music cds. IK’s Somewhere Over The Rainbow/What A Wonderful World is my favorite song. I performed it for the talent show here at school…I brought tears to the audience…it’s all from the local pride and IK’s memory 🙂 Rest in peace Bruddah IZ

I was just introduced to Israel’s music on my recent vacation cruise to Hawaii by my tour bus driver, “Brother Herman.” I am deeply grateful and was moved by his version Of “Somewhere Over he Rainbow/What A Wonderful World.” I found the CD Facing Future on a stop in Hilo. His spirit is with me now & my condolences to his family; however, the world is better, I know from the spirit in his music.– Gwendoline Hill

My Daughter was teaching at Punahou when Pele decided to change Big Island a little bit. And I spent some tome visiting with her, and fell in lovw with Hawaii. Hawaii is still beautiful, but there is something missing and Bruddah IZ somehow felt it and was able to put it into his songs. He was truely a Hawaiian Super Man. And I know he is singing for the Ancients, and some of his friends that went before him. But he did wonderful things for all of us while he was with us. He has left a hollow spot that no one will ever fill.

My nickname is Haoleus because i am a Haole from the US (mainland, NJ to be exact). That nickname was given to me by my more locally accepted shipmates aboard the USS Cushing stationed in Pearl Harbor.

I remember seeing the Facing Future album at the local record store and thinking the cd would be filled with tribal beats and grunting. I bought it only out of curiosity. Little did i know Iz had the voice of an angel and his cds would be the most prized cds in my entire music collection.

Besides countless hours of enjoyment the cd gave me more of an understanding of Hawaiian culture, history and pride.

Iz helped me understand what a truly beautiful place Hawaii is which i took for granted while i was there. Thanks to him i can bring myself back to when i was there when i listen to his music. I miss Hawaii, its beauty, its people and most of all its music.

Thanks for helping me wake up Iz. Rest in peace always. -Haoleus

I love to sit and listen to IZ. Listening to him is just too relaxing and enjoyable. I was fortunate enough to visit Hawai’i back in Feb. 2003 and after visiting it,it makes me appreciate his music even more. Hawai’i is the only place I’ve ever visited for such a short time and missed it as much as I have since I’ve been back home. Listening to IZ sing makes me feel like I’m back in Hawai’i. Bradah Iz, We grew up at the same time. You and I were about 14 years old when I started checking the “sounds out of Waianae”. Your music inspired me and many of my bradahs to place Hawaiiana deep in our hearts. I knew your future wife (Marlene Alo) from Halawa Valley, and grew up with their family. I performed on many stages back home, and created memories that will last a lifetime. My kumu’s were many: Darryl Lupenui, Obrian Eselu, Uncle George Naope, Edwina Siu, Manea Manuma, John Kaimikaua & Hula Halau O’Kukuna O’Kala. But I will never forget you as the inspiration to my music accomplishments. I memorized your first albums with skippy & the bradah’s. That was truly a time to remember and reflect. I left Hawaii in 1978 and attended College in the mainland on a Football Scholarship. I have never travelled away from home by myself. Whenever I was lost, or in an unknown place – I would pull out my guitar and start playing some of your songs. I was back home again and no longer feeling , lost. In fact, I started meeting new people and making new friends with your music & songs as a guide. You have helped me in many ways through the years. Thank You Bradah “IZ”. I can’t thank you enough for all that you hae meant to me. God Bless to you in Heaven, and to your Ohana back home. I’ll see you when the Lord calls me back home.

From my Heart – Greg “Tafa’s” Taufa’asau

Words cannot describe what the music of Izrael Kamakawiwo’ole does for me. He penetrates deep into the soul, expresses nothing but pure beauty, peace, hope, and justice. I am all haole on the outside, but have such a deep love for the islands and the people of Hawai’i. IZ has brought peace to my troubled sould on more occasions than I can remember, and he will continue to do so for millions to come. IZ lives in all who listen, really listen. Mahalos

i heard a wonderful song, a rendition of somewhere over the rainbow and what a wonderful world that just blew me away. It was an unadorned accoustic version of these songs that was absolutely brilliant. One man with just his voice and a ukalele produced something so special and so superior to almost any other piece of music i’ve ever heard. Then i heard that he has since passed away and although all i know of this man is this song i have to say that this news was crushing.

My husband and I discovered Iz about 20 years ago and we purchased our first cd. We always wanted to see him in person, but everytime we were on the islands, he was not performing. We eventually purchased all of his recorded music. When we arrived in Sept of 1997 for our annual trip and discovered his demise we were saddened, but we had always said he had the voice of an angel. He will be saddly missed, but not forgotten by his people and his dedication to the islands nor by his ‘people’ on the mainland. When we first heard his voice in a commercial, we were exhilirated to know that others would also know the joy of his voice. As the entertainment industry discovers his music, so will many new fans. We miss you, Bruddah!

I just listened to Israel Kamakawiwo’ole’s medly of Over the Rainbow / What a Wonderful World on the NPR site. I had heard a bit of the song before but it didn’t register with me at the time.

This time, I listened and cried as the sound went straitto my soul. I cried for the beauty of his voice and for knowing the world had lost something priceless with the death of this man. As a singer / musician myself I listened in awe to a voice and musical talent that I could never even try to describe or even try to put into words.

God bless you Israel Kamakawiwo’ole you have touched me deeply with your song and I will never forget…

I only recently discovered the music of Iz. It has touched my life and made it richer. I bought the “Facing Future” CD and that is all I listen to! I was saddened to hear of his passing. It is always the most talented and gifted ones who leave us to soon. I have never been to the islands but hope to go someday. I have a new appreciation for them now that I have heard Iz sing “Hawaii 78”. It is just beautiful. And the medley of “Somewhere over the rainbow/What a wonderful world” is pure genius. Iz has reached into my soul with his music and I mourn for the loss of a man I never knew. To his family and friends, I offer my sincere condolences and hope that you keep Iz’s music alive for generations of others to come.

Aloha to you reading this..I just returned from the Kohala Coast and started playing the concert disc and just had to find someone to write to and express my heartfelt gratitude for these discs of IZ. My first trip to your beautiful islands was in 1957 when I was only 9 years old and my heart never left. It was only 10 years after WW2 and still so pristine even on Oahu…driving around the island in those wonderful old open station wagons and getting my first taste of fresh pineapple from the little table set up in the fields. ( For free, what a concept!) I returned 20 years later with my former husband being stationed at Pearl. My daughter was born at Tripler…and still it was incredible to see the stars in the sand at Waikiki…when Kui Lee was still alive and Don Ho was sending people home dreaming of Hawaii. I think Duke Kahanamoku was still there as well. But with age memory fails. I divorced and remarried a man also in love with your home and has taken me there twice a year for 25 years…it is home to us. I am ashamed to say that I never purchased the music because it broke my heart to listen to it when I was away from the land I love so much. This latest trip was with a friend of 35 years that has listened to me talk about the most Loving place in the world and she too fell in love with the land as well as my friends that live the Spirit of Aloha every day. She experienced the Love they share so freely and our hearts almost burst from the feeling of “true Aloha”… I found it possible in my heart to purchase 2 discs of “IZ” and put them on for my husband as soon as I arrived…he got such tears in his eyes for missing the experience… We go back in Oct to Kona…our home away from home…. (I will need new discs by then because I am sure these will be worn out.) Losing IZ must have felt like the cruelest loss to his family (as well as extended and blended family) but how blessed it is to have his voice in song to carry us all thru this horrific time on our planet. Listening to his words of Love drives home the need to use Love and not war to settle anything. Thank you so much…from my heart I am so happy to find a place to express my feelings for what I have been given almost all of my life. Sending thoughts of Peace and Love, Suzen Halfpenny

Iz’s music has always been my absolute favorite. Israel is the only one who sings with lyrics that express my love and passion for extraordinary Hawaii! Everyone who has that love in their heart feels the same about this very influential artist! I’m sending dear Israel a big MAHALO and sweet ALOHA to his family and friends.

A great voice from a great man. Israel is our “most played” C.D His wit and humour have us constantly laughing. We never fail to laugh when he talks of “Quack”…who was caught blowing bubbles in the pond. Would loved to have seen him perform live.

My teacher let me listen to a song by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole, it was somewhere over the rainbow/what a wonderful world. This song touched my heart in a way that was just amazing. I am unfortunate that i was unable to know about Israel Kamakawiwo’ole earlier in my life. Ever since i heard that first song by him I have been listening to as much as I can of him. His voice was amazing and its sad to hear that he died at such a young age. I know his music will live forever in my heart and all around the world in many peoples lives. I will never forget the sound of his voice from these songs that i have been lucky enough to listen to, his voice was full of soul and passion and lifts my heart to want to be able to have that much passion for the things I accomplish in my life. For everyone out there who has listened to one of Israel Kamakawiwo’ole’s songs, share them with as many friends as possible so they can hear the Joy that it has brought to many hearts.

Only in the past couple of weeks, due to employment at a Hawaiian Coffee Shop (Keoki’s Surfin’ Ass) here in the mainland, did I meet Iz. I was heart broken to find that he is not alive anymore. Still, Iz, I want to thank you for introducing me to a world of music more beautiful than any I have known and I treasure hearing your voice each morning as I open the shop and play your CDs. You give me peace and I am greatful. Aloha Hawaiian Superman

Iz was the voice of Hawaii that can take me back to my childhood on Oahu. I am far away from these beauties now, but whenever I hear Iz sing, I am instantly back in the world which holds still such an enchantment over me. I truley wish that I could have enjoyed his song in person, because if he can be so moving as a recording, I can only dream of what the experience would have been for real. You will never stop giving, thank you.

I keep coming back to this message book, because I love reading how more and more people are discovering this wonderful man and the beautiful undying legacy he left us. As far as this “Hawaiian at heart” is concerned, the world needs Iz’s words of love and wisdom more than ever. It’s been a few years now since I was last in Hawaii, and I’m feeling the urge to go back. But till then, Brudda Iz helps to fill the void. Aloha and mahalo, ohana…

I had never heard of Iz until I heard him sing Over the Rainbow on ER when Dr. Green died. I was struck by the beauty of Iz’s voice and made it my “duty” to find out more about this man with the incredibly sweet voice. I found a cd and became hooked. I now own five and listen to them constantly at work. So much so that several of my office mates are now also hooked. I was devastated to find out that Iz had died several years ago. I’m just grateful that I’ve “discovered” Iz and will have his music to listen to. Mahalo, Iz!

On my 25th anniversary I visited the islands of Maui and Oahu. Celebrating my anniversary in Hawaii was a dream come true. You see, I had a friend Richard Takahashi whom I had met in Vietnam in 1966 and the purpose of our visit was two-fold. To visit a great friend from Waialua and celebrate being married for 25 years. While in Maui, before going to see my friend, I heard the music of Brother Iz……absolutely fell in love with the sound. After visiting my fiends Richard and Leanne in Oahu, I found that he had grown up with Iz’s older brother who preceded Israel in death. Felt as if the music and my friendship had some kind of a tie after that revelation. My wife and I have adopted “White Sandy Beach” as our song and I want the song “In dis Life” played at my funeral. We are residents of Arkansas but a part of my heart lives with my friend and his wife in Hawaii…….I hope to return again to that beautiful island and I wish nothing but “ALOHA” to the family of Bruddah IZ………..May God always bless you!

I am heart-broken to find out that the angelic voice that I have come to admire, had fallen silent five years previous. I first found Iz’s music from watching HBO’s “Taxi Cab Confession’s”, at the end of which they play “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”. Now, you have to understand the magic that was captured in that recording since I am neither a “Wizard of Oz” fan or a friend of Dorothy. However, his version of this song reached deep within my soul and plucked at my heart strings in such a way that I had to find out who the artist was. I was able download many versions of that song from various artists and after previewing about half of them I found Iz. My deepest condolences go out to the family! It has to be comforting to know that though he is not physically with us, he continues to live on in his music and the hearts of those whom continue to discover it. Though I never knew you, I feel as if I have lost a friend.

3/14/03 We just returned to Michigan from a vacation to Hawai’i where we fell in love with IZ’s music. We heard it at virtually every resort/hotel we stayed at on Hawai’i, Maui and on Oahu. I managed to find and purchase some of his CD’s in Honolulu, but was not aware that “Bruddah IZ” was no longer with us until I arrived home and searched for his website. Nobody mentioned that to us. We are so sad to learn that this gifted, gentle giant is gone. While it is unusually late to offer our condolences to the family (ohana?) now…..we want you to know how much we love the music and aloha feeling that IZ has brought to our lives. We will cherish his music, and life, forever.

Like everyone else who first heard Iz’s voice, i was captivated. I caught the tale end of the song somewhere over the rainbow/what a wonderful world at 11.15 last night. Hearing the lyrics and the gentle fusion of 2 classic songs, i knew i had found the song for the graduation class for my nephew next year. While it was never my fashion to call a radio station for the singer’s name, i was moved to do so. I am saddened to realize that i was a little too late to express my appreciation for a wonderful song but rejoicing in the hope that Iz is happier where he is today. May his voice lives on. Please help me in locating this hard-to-find cd. It would be a fitting tribute to play this song for the next generation to appreciate. God bless you all, IZ fans. 🙂

I just wanted to say how much I loved Israels music from the very first time I heard him sing. I haven’t known his music for very long but the songs I have listened to tells me he was awesome, unique, wise, genuine, and a good man of God. His words of wisdom brought tears to my eyes and the songs he sang were so beautiful. I don’t think there will ever be another Israel Kamakawiwo’ole. I know I would have loved to meet him. Some of the things he would talk about in his live versions made me wished that I could have met him and really get to know his life..Very good teacher…

I’m coming to Hawaii on Monday, March 10, and was researching Hawaiian culture and history in preparation for my trip. I always like to buy music of every culture I visit – I came across IZ and found samples of his singing on the ‘net. WOW!

I immediately went to the music store to look for his music. I found Facing Future right at the front of the shelf of the World / Hawaiian section – the last copy – I knew it was for me.

I’ve been listening to it for hours. I am transfixed. IZ’s voice is other-worldly – what a gift he had – I’m so sorry he’s gone, for he obviously brought joy and healing through his music to many, many people – why do these spirits go home early? I can’t wait to buy more of his CDs, and to see where he came from.

Thanks to his family and community for bringing him to us and nurturing and encouraging his talent.

I haven’t even arrived in Hawaii yet and already my life has become richer. I wonder what I will experience once there…

Please accept my condolences to IZ’s FAMILY & FRIENDS even though it is almost 6 yrs later. I can not express in words how empty his loss makes us feel and how we regret not “knowing” of him before his passing.

After spending a week on Oahu this past Jan. I wanted to take home, to Idaho, “the sounds of Hawaii.” I fell in love with the music. While at the Stadium Swapmeet my husband and I kept coming across Israel’s CD’s so we bought one. Yes, I have to admit we had not heard of him.

As I write this I am listening to CD number five of IZ’s, continuing to be touched by his voice and presence. I can’t say that I have had an artist move me as much as IZ has. With the beautiful sound of the Hawaiian language coupled with IZ’s angelic voice equals unparalleled music I don’t think can be found anywhere else. His clarity in melody joined with the ukulele is another sure beat to send chills throughout your body. Even though I listen to a CD every morning before work and sometimes again in the evenings I continue to be moved by IZ just as I was the first time I heard him.

Hawaii ’78 is an especially meaningful song to me but I can’t listen to it without getting choked up. In part it is that song that led me to further research Hawaii’s history.

My apologizes if I have rambled but I just HAD to let someone know how much we DEARLY LOVE IZ & his music. IZ brings out in us all the emotions that are a part of being human. He is a true Hawaiian epitome of what humanity should be.

Sincerely, Kim

I am a guitarist and singer and was always struck by the song at the end of Finding Forrester but never got around to learning more about it.

My stepdaughter and her boyfriend were watching the DVD this evening; they left before it was over, so I watched the rest and was reminded of that song. I decided to write down all the words, which I did. Then I sought to find out what I could about the performer, thinking that perhaps I’d write him to learn about the chords, if I didn’t figure it out. I was excited that google.com found some hits, but I was really saddened to learn that Israel died over 5 years ago. What a shocker! Anyway, I aim to learn that song now not just because I really like it, but to honor IZ..

I grew up in Hawaii from 1959 to 1970 and it truly was paradise. I first picked up a ukele when I was five years old and began a love for hawaiian music and culture. We had a family that lived across the street from us in Foster Village, the Pangs, that performed hawaiian music as a family band and I use to hang out there and listen for hours. When I came across BRUDDAH IZ, a couple of years ago, he brought back such excellent memories of my love for Hawaii. I was truly saddened by his passing. Keep his music alive! Aloha!

Every time I hear that voice, I get shivers. At first I want to cry and then I am happy for the beauty that he creates. Each time I sing my son “Somewhere Over The Rainbow”, my heart catches in my throat at the depth of feeling that Iz brought to the song. I got lucky and found Bruddah Iz’s CD featured at Borders Book and Music in 2002. When I heard it I was taken aback by the beauty of his voice and bought it immediately. I feel the haunting sound of his voice when he talks about his dad. I looked up this web site today because we are traveling in May to Maui and would of gone wherever he was performing in Hawaii while there. I was shocked and saddened to find out he had died. I’am sorry. I agree with his thoughts on all the changes the Hawaiian Islands have gone through. My prior visit to Maui the local paper had an article on building a multi lane road from the airport to Lahaina. My view is would change the environment in a negative way. I talked to a owner of a business in Maui who said if our governer wasn’t half hawaiian he would of given it all away. I realize that a new governer has been elected and hopefully

Iz’s song “Over the Rainbow” was used at the end of the movie, “Finding Forrester” starring Sean Connery. I have also heard it by telephone when put on hold by the local Apple Computer store in Chandler, AZ. His album, “Facing Future” was sent to me a few months ago by my daughter, who lives in Kaluha, Oahu.

Iz has a beautiful, haunting voice that is most unique. This reminds me of another great voice that died young–Karen Carpenter.

I can’t remember the first time I heard Bruddah IZ, but I do remember the feeling when I heard his Over the Rainbow medley. It returned when I heard it on a commercial for E- Toys…I cried everytime I saw it. Just saw Finding Forrester and found out who the man was behind the voice that moves me to tears everytime I hear it. I’m anxiously awaiting Facing the Future in the mail to hear more of his work and can’t wait to find out more about him.

Tena Koutou Katoa …

I’m from Aotearoa, New Zealand and like many others I discovered Iz’ music after he passed away. I watched the movie “Race the Sun” (featuring Halle Berry) which was filmed in Hawai’i and heard a snippet of the song “Hawai’i 78” towards the end of the movie. I didn’t know who was singing the song, but I noted on the credits that the singer was Iz. That song is definitely my favourite.

A truly beautiful man, with a wonderful voice …

Recently found IZ and his music on a trip to Kauai in Dec. 02. I have fallen in love with this gentle giant. He will be missed by all who knew him – the world lost a lot when he passed.

Would love to have more information on the man IZ or communicate with those who still regard him as a Hawaiian hero he was.

I heard his music playing at Borders the other day and had to by it! I’ve been to Hawaii several time and feel a spiritual connection to the islands. I’ve been listening to the CD continually for 3 days now and it lifts me and at the same time brings me saddness and longing for Hawaii.

Bless you IZ

Bruddah IZ is forever the most talented and deep man to ever step foot on Hawai’i. Even though he no longer lives his music is still heard throughout the island. So even though his body is no longer here, his beautiful soul lives on through his song. Even when we seem to lose out roots, Iz will always be able to show us what where are home is. My heart goes out to you. ‘Oi aku ka nui o kona pu’uwai ma mua o ka moana. Aloha.

If it weren’t for N.B.C. using Iz’s version of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”, I may have never heard one of the most beautiful voices ever known to man!!! When it was played on “ER”, I froze in my chair and cried like a baby. I could not rest till I found out who sang it. His voice has moved me like no other ever has. If it wasn’t for the World Wide Web, I may have never found him. I just ordered one of his cd’s and am sure to order them all. Thanks so much for this web site and may Iz’s voice live forever through his recordings!!! Erik T. Eicholtz, drummer for Lew Jetton and 61 South.

I only recently came to know of Israel Kamakawiwo’ole through the movie ‘Finding Forester’ – the movie was excellent, but what I couldn’t get out of my head was the glorious rendition of ‘Over the rainbow/wonderful world’ at the end of the film. I practically wore out the video tape rewinding and playing it over and over again! My very sweet and observant wife presented me with the appropriate CD for Christmas, and I’ve since purchased another – give me time and I’m sure I’ll eventually get them all!

Though I’ve lived in the US for a few years I’m originally from Australia – which goes some way to explaining my ignorance of the music – but I’ve since been singing it’s praises to all and sundry back home, and in fact searched for a site like this to direct friends and family to. The astonishing part about finding the site was to discover that ‘Iz’ and I share exactly the same birthday – right down to the same year, 1959! Makes his untimely passing even sadder in a sense for me.

It’s a lovely site and a great tribute to him, as well as to the many people who obviously cared deeply for the man and his astonishing voice and music.

I live in Canada and my girlfriend lives in America, with over 800 highway miles between us. I spent this last Christmas with her – two weeks that was entirely to short – and the experience was bittersweet. It was my first trip to the US, and the first time in months that I saw my girl. During the Christmas holidays, she introduced me to Iz’s music, specifically “Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World”. Normally, I listen to metal or industrial music because it expresses the anger and frustration I sometimes feel but have no outlet for. Izrael’s voice and music are a salve, taking me away to a place of peace and calm and daydreams. I didn’t know him, and more the pity, I will never get the chance. But, he left his beautiful music and spirit, neither of which will pass away but instead live on in the hearts of those who were privileged to share his joy and unabashed love of life through his enchanting Hawaiian stylings. “Somewhere…” has become “our song”, mine and my girl’s, and listening to it helps to ease the time and distance between us, it’s bittersweetness giving voice to our own. Goodbye, Iz. You are loved and missed.

The album, “Facing Future” was the album that my wife and I listened to the most on our second trip to Kauai – everyday, rain or shine.

It was only today (01/19/03) that I realize that IZ passed away before I got a chance to know him.

Now he definitely ‘somewhere over the rainbow.’

The first time I started to listen to hawaiian was about a year and a half to two years. My Mother always listened to hawaiian music and I started getting into it and she has some tapes from Bruddah Iz and I asked who this singer was and she told me that it is Iz and I started to listen to his music and it turned my life around from his music and even though I have never met him or went to his funeral but through his music it feels like I have known him for a long time through his music. Every time I listen to his music, I get serenity because he sings calmly and how the way he sings his songs.

For christmas I bought her the CD Facing the future and we played it christmas morning and we all had a good cry. This man has a powerful voice and the emotion that comes through just chills you to the bone.

May God bless IZ and his family, and may the world rejoice in his music.

HIS MUSIC HAS LIFT MY SOUL LEAVING ME WITHOUT DOUBT, THERE WERE TIMES WHEN I THOUGHT LIFE WAS NOTHING AND HIS SONGS KEPT ME STRONG, COMING FROM A NATIVE HAWAIIAN BACKGROUND IT HURTS TO SEE MY PEOPLE SUFFER WITH ALL THIS RACISM AND THE ILLEGAL BATTLES WE HAD TO FACE, IF I HAD ONE WISH IT WOULD BE FOR MY PEOPLE TO LIVE WITH OUT SHAME AND SELF DOUBTS TO COME TOGETHER AND UNITE, PRESERVE OUR LANGUAGE AND CULTURE, TAKE BACK WHAT WE SHOULD ALREADY OWN.

WE SHALL OVER COME NOT LATER BUT NOW.

Bruddah Iz was more than a man. He was what legends, heroes, and greatness was made of. From his first record he was already destined for huge things. And the music he played reflected the fact that his heart was bigger than all of it. Aloha Bruddah Iz.

My best friend brought me back a copy of the album “Facing Future” after his last trip to the islands. I listened to the cd for the first time as I was driving back to my house on christmas night. My friend told me that I would love it. I do. I was instantly carried away by the light (but oh so pure) voice and easy strumming guitar. I don’t listen to that cd, I feel it. It resonates throughout my body to the very depths of my heart. What peacefulness there is! What tranquility! My soul has been touched. Mahalo.

Music has always been part of the lives of the Hawaiian people. For Brother Iz it was his love for music that made him what he is today, a legend. Brother Izrael Kamakawiwo’ole is now singing for our Heavenly Father, and if you beleive and listen very carefully, you can still hear the voice of our Brother Iz. Sing my brother for I will remember you always and someday I will sing along with you. “Meke Aloha Pua Ole A Hui Hou”

Bruddah IZ, though sadly gone on, has changed my life forever. Recently I visited the islands for the first time and caught the Hawaiian bug which makes soooo many return. I have been learning the ukulele and IZ has been my biggest inspiration. Now I want to learn and sing in the Hawaiian language as well. Not to mention go back.

Thank you cousin IZ, your words and music have changed a bug to a deep seated love and respect of all things Hawaiian. I truly feel I am now a Hawaiian at heart, and it is now my goal in life to spread the Aloha. Mahalo dear IZ!

A good friend who has been working in Hawaii gave me IZ’s Facing Future CD for Christmas. I had to go buy a CD player so I could listen to it. I have enjoyed it so very much that I want more of his music. IZ’s music resonates in my soul and has made me both laugh and cry. IZ tells the stories of his people with his music – people who were treated in many ways even less well than some of my ancestors were. I am part Native American – Cherokee. May IZ and his music live forever.

Hello, I My name is Marc as you can see, I’m 17 years old. I live in Lyon. This summer my great sister died after a car crash. She was 22 years old, her name is Gaëlle. She will stay forever in my heart and I would never forget her. At this time I work as I can in my college. 4or 5 months ago, one of my school’s friend sent me this really really beautiful song. I immediatly loved it. It was so nice, that ‘s why when I listened to it, I always think to my sister. Since the beginning I spent many hours to listen this music. But as you can see, I can’t speak, understand, and write english very well. That’s the reason why I don’t really understand these lyrics of this song. Today I decided to search them by internet, and I came here. I’ve read some of your message and I start to understand better what is the story of this song. And now I like IZ more than before. This coincidence! Whithout knowing lyrics, I felt that this song has been writen in order to recall, to remember somebody… Now, I am more and more interested by this song. If anybody could help me to understand this music (by sending me the lyrics and/or recounting Bruddah’s life) I would be really pleased. I hope you will send me back.

To Gaëlle, my loved sister, and to Bruddah.

Marc

My sister and I both loved Iz’s songs of his heart. It wasn’t until the death of our dear brother Mike that we found he too loved Iz. My tears flow reading about Iz… for both him and Mike. Mike was disabled for years and lived in much pain. Yet he took care of our father ( who died 3 months before Mike) and endured many emotional and physical injuries from our brother Stas who lived in the same house. But Mike had the best gift that any person could have…a FRIEND named Eugene. Eugene and his wife had visited Hawaii , and purchased Iz’s tape. At Mike’s funeral, Gene told us how he had played it for Mike and told him that he wanted it played at his funeral. Mike said “Gene, you have to promise me that you will play it for my funeral.” Gene did.

And at that time, my soul heard all the angels!

I just “found” Israel this week. My friend had his “Somewhere over the Rainbow” tribute playing…I fell in love with that song and wanted to hear more of his songs. My friend Laura and I fell in love w/ Israel’s music instantly and she went to the website to find that he was no longer w/ us. It saddens me to know that such a wonderful person could be gone… I want to tell his wife to be strong and his daughter to remember him well. My dad died when I was 4, and I want to tell her that she will see pieces of him coming through in her. Little quirks, and personality traits will become apparent. Sweetheart, that is him living on in your heart…and I know that he must be….Rest in peace Iz.

I had the privilege of seeing IZ with the Makaha Sons of Niihau on New Year’s Eve in, I believe, 1978, in a bar just outside Honolulu. It was one of the most memorable musical experiences of my life. I will never forget the beautiful voices of IZ, his brother Skippy, and the rest of the guys in the band. I’ve been away from the Islands for about 13 years, but recently got re-aquainted with IZ’s music on a trip to Kauai this past Christmas. It seemed that wherever I went, someone was playing one of IZ’s CD’s.

Although, I am sad at his passing, I’m thankful he was here long enough to leave the rest of us his beautiful voice and music.
