Comments: Namaste…Aloha…Dear Heart, I grew up in Hawaii…underwater at Nanakuli, just south by the railroad tracks I snorkled three hours a day, from 1956 to 1960…paradise/heaven time on this earth. Now I am in Santa Barbara, California…and when I discovered “Israel Kamakawiwo’ole” I went into Ecstacy. He spoke to my heart, my spiritual roots, my physical “coming into this body time of this incarnation”. When I heard he died, I felt my heart in agony crying out for his spirit, and my love and deepest prayers soared up towards his risen spirit. I can’t really say what it did to me, but he is, is a part of my wife’s and my life now. What more can I say. He takes me to a higher place of love. Oh yes, I felt to “Haole trip of being a seventh grader in Waipahu Catholic School in 1958-59. Yes, 4 Haoles and 76 “Locals” in one Seventh Grade class. Yes, I fought and won respect. But the year before, Clarence and Larry from Nanakuli (heavy set, black wavy hair, tall, thin sandy abond hair) and I and one other Haole I don’t remember were one against the Barber’s Ponit 6th graders–we had a purple Hawk’s Head as our symbol, and we defeated them all…I wander in my later years on the “Mainland”, but let me say that my heart has never left Hawaii, and Brother Iz has taken me back to those “Golden Years”. If you, his wife or daughter get this message, “Thank you for loving him, being born to him and you, and just being their to love, honor and thank”. Last thot (maybe), God Bless You…Thank You…

I saw bruddah Iz on TV doing an interview while I was there. He kind of symbolized the trip for me. Ended up buying a couple of his albums (CD’s). I am shocked to hear now of his passing. Respectfully, kirbs

Comments: I did’nt pay attention to his music while he was alive. But I changed my indifference to him and his music,as I happened to be on Maui for my very first time the day he passed away! A strange thing happened in the early morning hour of arou- nd 3:am. I was awakened to the faint sound of drumming,I got up looked out of the window but there was nothing.I listened for awhile till the drumming faded. When awoke I turned on the hotel tv. and it was all over the channels that Israel had died early that morning. As soon as I heard the news I knew that the drumming was for him.I do not know if anyone else heard it.My Mother told me stories of the islands so I knew that the drums were for him.His music is the greatest! His voice is so innocent and pure. His message was and as it never ever dies, about Love pure and simple. Comments: Where can I possibly begin….On May 15th 1998, my wife and I were married on a small beach in Poipu, Kauai. On that following Monday night in our condo, we tuned in to the Hawaiian Music Awards. At the beginning, there was a tribute to IZ. Up until this point, being from the mainland, we hadn’t heard to much about this legend. As we sat and watched and listened to the magical 5 minute highlight, my wife and I knew we found something special. The very next day we bought the live tape and listened to this voice like we’ve never heard before. We thought to ourselves”what a perfect addition to our week in paradise”. Although we are truly saddened at the fact that we will be unable to experience IZ in person, we feel extremely fortunate to have come to know the art in which he has shared with his fans. To this day, the sound of Brudda IZ flows through our home in San Francisco. Next week, for my 30th birthday, my wife and I will be in Maui. Ever since the day we left in May, we have been drawn to the magical Isle, savoring the memories and history of this special man, OUR Brudda IZ. Our memories and love for IZ may be new, but the way we have been touched, they will last a lifetime….mahalo

Comments: Just returned from 2 weeks in Maui, listening to IZ’s voice in all the gift shops, and brought his Facing Future CD home with me. I was searching for more of his music, when I came upon this terrible news. I am so sorry, words cannot say. His lyrics in his first song referencing his father have unfortunately come around to lend truth, and I am so terribly sorry to hear that. The song brought tears to my eyes up until today as it was, and now those tears will have meaning. Thankfully we still have his voice to cherish!

He touched my family in a very special way that evening. To see the power and passion in him when he performed “In This Life”and the impact on everyone in the room, convinced me we were seeing something very special. That memory will always be with me. Comments: I just discovered Iz’s music yesterday listening to the radio in my car. It was drizzling rain and the dj played “Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World”. I was so moved by the beauty of Iz’s voice and ukelele playing that I had to stop and just listen to the song. When the dj announced who this man was I steered myself to a cd store and bought whatever Iz cds they had. I was happy they had “Facing Future” which features the song I’d heard. What a gifted, sensitive and inspirational artist he was. I feel lucky to know his music.

Comments: When I first move here, I didn’t know much of Hawaii. I was born in Hawaii, then my parents moved on. From California then to Samoa. Now I’m here. Izrael’ music thaught me a lot about what I had knew. I was raised Hawaiian style you can say and also the old samoan way aswell. His way to me seemed very traditional, hawaiian way. Past down from father to son. I listened to his music and know that his true feelings are that the same as many who find it hard to express.Yet, his love and music brings out the best in everything we know of today and always for ever and eternity. I wish I could have thanked him in the past. I as well as many others had the opportunity too when we went to all his concerts. Yet I didn’t have the priveledge too, but would like to say “Thank you ” with all the love and joy and blessings for his family. Whom in his music expressed all the love in the world. I loved a man who I didn’t know but loved him as a brother who I knew in my heart and soul and through his music he will always live in me. Thank you again for letting me say these words. Aloha.

We were immediately impressed and touched by this huge man’s tenderness and softness to his wife and family. We soon learned he was one of Hawaii’s leading folk singers and this led us to purchase two of his albums (Facing Future and E Ala E). Two years later we are still listening and enjoying his music. Recently my wife, while shopping in New York City recognized another album of his and this prompted us to search the Web for it. This is how we learned of his death. We feel the world has lost a very fine artist and person and our sympathy is extended to his family and friends.

Braddah Iz Music has really inspired me to Olelo Hawaiian. It is now my second year in da language and I feel so proud and good that I will be able to speak fluent soon. Braddah Iz could speak da language with such grace within his music that everytime I would listen I would just get shivers all over. His music went straight to my heart and I know that he sung from his heart. One thing that took my breath away was the fact that Braddah Iz accepted and respected every person whether they were Hawaiian or not. He had such a great love for da people of Hawai`i. His music was so positive. I believe that everyone should listen to Braddah Iz music because it touched me so deep and I know it would do the same for others. I am a sophmore in College in California and let me say that I get very homesick but all I have to do is turn on Braddah Iz CD and I feel so at home. He has gotten me through many tough times. I just want to say Mahalo nui loa Malamapono! Ahui hou!! Aloha, Hokuao

The tune is “Yellow Bird” Lyrics: Mynah bird, up high in the banyan tree, Mynah bird, you rascal of Waikiki, You just sit and yell by the big hotel, Tourist cannot sleep, call you sassy creep,Soon we make our bed inside Diamond Head, You too noisy for me! When I complain to hotel cop, he reply cheerful word, “There are three things man cannot stop: Taxes and death and da mynah bird!” Mynah bird up high in da banyan tree, Mynah bird, you rascal of Waikiki, Wish I find da way make you fly away. Even Charlie Chan cannot make you run. Maybe FBI trap you by and by. You too clever for me! Wish that I was Sheppard man, I’d fly into da space. Like the trade winds on the moon I land, First thing I see is your sassy face. Mynah bird, up high in the banyan tree, Mynah bird, you rascal of Waikiki. You just sit and yell by the big hotel, Tourist cannot sleep, call you sassy creep, Soon we make our bed inside Diamond Head, You too noisy for me! Enjoy. Sandy

I am saddened by his passing but he left some of the most beautiful music that I have ever heard, and has placed an eternal spirit of Hawaiian-ness with in me. When I listen to his music he comes alive over and over again. I have gathered from reading the liner notes that he had a wife and daughter. If I could speak to them I would tell them that their husband and father was a truly great man and his memory will live forever through his music and message of love and acceptance.

My husband has been travelling to Hawaii on business for over 8 years now, and usually spends 5 months a year in the Islands. Whenever he comes home, he says he feels homesick for the Hawaiian lifestyle and the people. Recently I accompanied him on a business trip. During the trip, I finally heard some of the Hawaiian music my husband keeps talking about – I finnally heard Bruddah Iz. Or I should say I finally experienced Bruddah Iz. The first time I heard his music it made me cry – he sings from his soul. Through his music I have gotten a brief glimpse and feeling for what has caused this homesick feeling in my husband. I have started to understand the Aloha spirit. We both long for the day we can call ourselves Kama’aina.

I’ve only recently come to know Bruddah IZ, but his heart, ideas and love have stirred me. Israel Kamakawiwo’ole was a man with a heart too warm for most of this cold world, ideas too big for most of this small-minded world, and a love too simple for most of this complex world. The only true significance of a life is how it touches other lives. Once a life is touched, it is never quite the same, but carries on to touch others. The testaments we leave here here reflect IZ’s significance. The testaments we leave here reflect his love that we carry. Mahalo, IZ and family. Mahalo.

Wanted to add my two cents wirt… IZ, I never met you but I feel like you one old frien’. Hearing you talk on the CDs feels like we sitting down talking story. Sometimes I just play those parts when I need a dose of pure aloha… hearing you talk about your family and your father on “Facing Future” still give me chicken skin… “I feel free now, I was just confined, you know?….” Yeah IZ you free now…. aloha braddah… you NOT gone, and NOT forgotten.

I was so very surprised to learn, only a few minutes ago at this website, of dear IZ departing the body one year before. I was hoping to learn of new music, but this was the news I received. I am an African-American from the U.S. mainland, now living in Taiwan, and I had the enormous good fortune of having been introduced to his music on a visit to Guam in August of 1996. The friend who played “Facing Future” for me did not know where we could obtain a CD or tape in Guam, and so I remember spending the seven days of my visit trying to memorize the song containing the words (please forgive my spelling, and know it’s all coming from a loving heart) “o ama, ka’ea oka aina, i kapuno, o Hawaii…” I’d try to sing the whole song over and over again, teeth chattering, on freezing nights while waiting for the bus during my time teaching in Seoul, Korea. It made the time pass in a very meditative and lovely way. Well, recalling the words of the gentle artist himself, I really feel like just closing out my little remembrance with a line from one of the sweetest, happiest covers of two earlier tunes–in a medley–that I’ve ever had the pleasure of hearing. When I think of the fact that this beautiful soul made music at a time when we all could hear him and be filled, “I say to myself, ‘What a wonderful world’.” ************************ You did life-affirming work here for the many who heard the purity of your voice and message, IZ. I’ll not be sad now that you are free. I’ll try my best not to be as selfish as all that. But I will need a bit of time to adjust to the fact that you’ve moved on to other things, and that we have of your music all we will have this time ’round. Thank you so much for that!!! The body, as we are well aware, can ensnare us, confound us, sabotage us, and ultimately, it does fail us. Fortunately it does not define us in the core sense, if we are aware of our true nature, and of our ability to give to others from the part of us that never perishes. IZ must have been aware of this fact; his music is the proof that endures. Love and good wishes always to the family of IZ. Someday I hope to visit your homeland. Having held in my mind the many powerful images IZ created through his art, I feel like I have already had a deep experience of the best that your beautiful islands have to offer. And to the organizer of this guestbook: I thank you for giving us all the opportunity to share our thoughts in this way. I’m sort of new to this info highway stuff myself. I hope I haven’t taken up too much space, and that many others will stop in to share their memories and good wishes.

For IZ If we could share with you just one more day, Would it be only to sing and play, “Talk story”, share our laughter and joy and revisit those tales of a little boy? Or would we reach down deep inside, to all of the feelings that we try to hide, and tell you then how much we cared for all that you gave and all you shared? And would it amaze you, the breadth and depth of sorrow and loss that we felt at your death? And in the midst of our grief and tears, Your music lived on, passed through our ears to that place in our souls where love’s embers glow to remind us now that we cannot know how many days each one will live, and how much love we have to give. Now when we listen to your “Angel” voice, You tell us now that we have a choice, To cherish each moment, each day, each year each lesson, each smile, each laugh and each tear. And IZ, you taught us what we do know now, we will have that day “A HUI HOU!” WITH RESPECT AND LOVE, Carole J. Kennedy-Borg June 26, 1998.

Wassup braddah IZ and your family!!!!! Hows it going? losing braddah IZ was a hard thing 4 me 2 manage because i adore braddah IZ alot because he played a big role in my life.I loved IZ’s music because its relaxing at 1 point. The song that I love the best is Jonny Mahoe because what he says is true. what I mean is that someone can start there lives off good they can get straight A’s at first but later on in the future they can become a gangsta and then get killed and when they turn there backs on us we turn our backs on them. And its true a Jonny Mahoe is born every day. Well thats all i have 2 say right now so good-bye and best wishes!!!!! ALOHA, Mahealani Silva

In the last year, I’ve learned so many things about Israel, and I am deeply touched by his life and music. It is unfortunate that I first learned about Iz on the very day he died. It affected personally. Having fought weight all my life as well as sang all my life, I can understand some of the problems Iz faced. May he rest in peace, but his music should live on.

I think you have done so much to promote Hawaiians and Hawaiian culture, and I hope more haoles will come to appreciate both what the Hawaiians have and what they have lost. I miss you, although I have never met you, and I will do my small part to pass along your aloha to the people who have no idea what what aloha is. -John

My husband and I returned from our first trip to Hawaii, where we visited the island of Kauai for 8 days. During our stay, we were enchanted by the people, sights, and sounds of the true aloha spirit. We purchased IZ’s latest album “The Man and His Music” and fell in love with IZ. It was only through reading inside the case that we discovered that IZ had passed away. We were so sad that Hawaii and the entire world lost such a talented, pure, delicate man such as IZ. We realized that even though it has been nearly a year that all of the island is still mourning his death. We understand why, after experiencing his music. Whenever we listen to his music, we are reminded of the beautiful land we visited, and how lucky everyone there was to have IZ touch their lives. Through his music and words, IZ will live on forever in the hearts of those who are Hawaiian’s and Hawaiian’s-at-heart”. Aloha, IZ. Mahalo for touching our soul.

I’d just like to say that although I do not live in Hawaii but my dad was born there and so I visit often. Two summers ago(?) my mother dragged me to The BLue Hawaiian Moonlight Festival. I went because I wanted to see IZ. I waited in the rain, dripping to the bone (I had no umbrella) and although my mother wanted to leave I refused to leave. When IZ’s group minus IZ came on I sobbed and sang along. The following year at the Blue Hawaiian Moonlight Festival I comforted my grief of this great person by listening to the Makaha Sons.

Iz’s music has touched the very foundations of my soul from the first time I heard of him on a trip to Hawai’i in 1994. His music touched a strong nerve to my Hawaiian heritage. It made me get in touch with that heritage of which I knew very little of. His love and compassion and the ability he had to make good humor of life while at the same time confront all the demons which we deal with in life and society at large truly made him a giant of a man. His death has continued to bring great sorrow to me and I regret never having to enjoy his music and him, live. But in his music and his message he continues to live in my heart. Mahalo and Aloha, truly the good die young. Sincerely, Mike Pinedo A Chicano/Hawaiian in East Los Angeles,CA

There isn’t one word that would describe Israel. From reading just about everything you can find about this great man, I’m speechless. People from Japan to Germany, from New York to New Zealand, from Alaska to Washington, from New England to Maryland…I could go on forever. They all signed this guest book. What can I say??? This Hawaiian is a legend. He touched everyone. My only regrets is the fact that I was too intimidated in approaching him everytime I saw him. I should have. He was such a loving KANAKA. My loss…:( To the Kamakawiwo’ole Ohana, all my aloha! To the rest of Iz’s family (nation wide), continue to support him as well as his music and all Hawaiian music. Braddah IZ, you LIVE! Saying to me, “Iz wen die yeah?” Made me real sad. I told her, “he’s always going to be here with us.” Which is true. For everyone who’s reading this, you know he touched so much people. I remember each and everytime I talked with him or saw him. Alway’s made me feel like I was someone important. He made everybody feel equal. I think the first time I talked to him was at the Steal Pulse concert at Kualoa. Was raining but for some reason, he made it seem sunny. And at the Ka La Hui march at Iolani Palace, he had so much aloha…I could go on forever. Marlene and Wehe, all my aloha! To everyone else, Mahalo nui loa…this memory book is so PONO! I have always been proud to be kanaka maoli, and this has never been more true than when people fall in love with our music; it has already become part of Tsula’s, my fiance’s, very being. As Bruddah IZ said, the music comes from our hearts and spirits, and it is always a blessing when others share with us something as personal. Bruddah did exactly that and moved so many. As a native american I can feel the depth of what he had to say and how he said it, his songs have brought me to tears more than once, that says alot to me. In an age of sellout musicians, his heart and music remained pure and to me? He was the heart of Hawai’ian music…he will be sorely missed, I’m just appreciative that we all had the chance to be touched by him, my fiance and my children will grow up listening to him as it is so good for the soul…. It is only now I have discovered the website of the forever enchanting IZ. As a Radio Broadcaster for a polynesian radio station in Auckland, NZ, I was handed a copy of Iz’ CD which contained the song Hi’ilawe. Amongst other great songs, the sound of IZ quickly became an integral part of the station’s playlist. Though his music was relatively new to NZ radio, his death was totally unexpected. The news came by phone right after playing “Living in a Sovereign Land” during my Breakfast Show that day. The rest of my show became a Tribute to Israel Kamakawiwo’ole. This loss is no one elses earthly gain but his voice, his frame, his music, his…being IZ will never be lost in our hearts. You’re Up There IZ. Jae’D Victor

Thank you for keeping Iz’s spirit alive in this way. His CD’s will always be the primary connection, but, sadly, there will be no more of them. I discovered Iz’s music in a Costco on the big island on a visit in 1995, and had the pleasure of seeing Iz perform on Kaua’ later that month. I am a blue-eyed howlie who feels a special connection to the islands, their people, and, especially, to their music. Iz’s recordings keep that connection alive for me. His voice and his music seemed to come from his heart, and from the heart of the Hawai’ian people themselves. Mahalo! Aloha! Will Matthews

To the Family and Friends of “IZ” I was living in Italy when I got the news, at the same time I also got a copy of the TV tribute and his last CD. My family and I watched in silence as the images crossed the screen of the things we hold dear to us…. the Islands (our home),the people (our friends)and the music, and of course…”IZ” Yes I’m sad that he’s gone, but like all things that we never understand…..there was a purpose of him leaving us. I met “IZ” once, at the 94 ukulele festival. I was in the adult class at Roy Sakuma’s and was performing also. “IZ” had a few people around him and I joined in, when I got the chance I told him he was my inspiration for learning to play (what I really said was…if you can play with those big fingers, this left-handed haole can play too!)he looked at me all serious then his friends and back to me and then let out a smile and a big laugh that I’ll never forget. Now I’m back in the USA and closer to my family and friends, but I’m not able to say a proper goodbye to “IZ” from here. So I’ll continue to play my ukulele and think of the kind man that inspired me till I can return to the Islands and a simply say……..Aloha IZ. Michael

Was listening to Makaha Bash 3 tonight, and made me homesick for the islands. Rest in peace Bruddah. Was stationed with a relative of Iz’s from 91-93…hooked me up with an autographed copy of Makaha Bash 3. This haole boy misses the islands ,Iz’s beautiful voice, and the love and respect he had for Hawai’i. “Malama pono…and drive fast…”

Aloha no, I met Iz and Marlene in Las Vegas. I believe it was their first trip to the mainland. I came down from Eureka Calif about 800 miles away. I remember asking someone if I could talk to Iz backstage for a moment. I rememember crying the moment he started to sing. It was a fabulous concert and I will never forget it. Someone called me “Eureka” and said “You can see him now”. I remember having all these questions in my head that I wanted to ask him about his music and his ukulele, but when I was actually standing in front of him I forgot everything and could only say that I loved him and his music. Marlene gave me three IZ stickers. Two I gave to dear friends and I kept one for myself which I still have. It adorns the binder I have of Hawaiian music. Unfortunately, I did not discover Iz’s music until too late, so I never had a chance to see him in person. I have all of his solo CD’s, as well as the CD’s he did with the Makaha Sons, and I am tracking down the other tapes. I play his music almost daily, and have never heard another Hawaiian artist with so much aloha in his voice. From the little I know about him, it seems that he was a hell of a person, and will be greatly missed. I am happy for the oppurtunity to know him through his music.

I too am very touched by Iz’z music. Although I am not Hawaiian, his music has touched me with the Aloha Spirit. I am moved by his majestic voice each time I listen to his music. For thirty years my father and I have never once been able to enjoy the same music. His taste and mine are as opposite as they come. For the first time ever we have found a common ground when it come to music. To my surprise my 70 year old father fell in love with Iz’s music along with my whole family. “Bruddah Iz” is still working his magic from beyond the grave. His music has managed to bring me and my father closer together. Thank you, Iz. You will always hold a special place in my heart.

My memories of braddah IZ is vague yet sweetly embraced as I listen to the words of his musical renditions. His voice is so magical and soothing to my soul. It touches me deeply reminding me of Hawai’i “ku’u home”. He touches my heart and takes meback to the days when hawaiians could live free and the children coud care for themselves. Nowdays its al’ mess up the kids are running wild and no’ respec’ I tell you. But beautiful emotional REAL musicians such as Israel can tame just about any heart. Thank you bradah & family for building a better future for hawaiians!! The feelings of motivation to make a differences for my island, my people is the feeling I get when I listen to our dear braddah IZ. He is definately loved by all who hold the islands and the people near to their hearts. Best wishes & hugs & kisses, Kanani.

I was devastated to hear the bad news.I was introduced to his music by my parents. I am of hawaiian decent even though my name says different, but i felt so much pride and emotions about my heritage I never felt until I listened to his music. He will always be my favorite “Hawaiian Music” artist. His lyrics and melodies touched more people than can be imagined. I play all his albums for all my friends. Everyone see’s how his music affects me and my family. My favorite is “White Sandy Beach”. No song has ever made me break down and get emotional as I do when i listen to it. He is a big man with a very big heart and showed the “Aloha Spirit” better than anyone else I know. He woke up the Hawaiian in me. He opened up my heart to all people. He gave me back my “AlohaSpirit”. For that, I am eternally greatful to Bruddah IZ. ONIPA”A!!!

I think that Iz is the bomb and I love all of his songs. I would like to give my warmest condolences to his wife and family. Iz will always be with us in our hearts but, for now he’s singing with the angels!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think that Iz still is the best hawaiian singer that I know. love his music and I think that he is a very lovely singer. Even though he’s not with us his legend still lives with us. I really like one of his last songs the best”Johnny Mahoe.” IZ is a real Living Legend and he will with us forever and ever!

Iz has, was, and always will be one of the great Hawaiian singers and song writers. His music touched my heart, as well as the millions who have heard his music and felt his creative spirit. As a beginning musician myself, I try to cary the same qualities and same spirit that Iz carried into his music. A hui hou bruddha.

We found Isreal’s music while vacationing in Kauai earlier this month (January 1998) we fell in love with his music. We sense a great pride that he shared for his homeland – we feel sad that his life ended far too soon.

We love Israels’ music and play his cd frequently. Today is Jan. 21, 1998 and I caught the last 10 minutes of the TV show “Party of Five.” I was astonished when they started to pay “Over the rainbow/What a wonderful world”. I came up to the computer to see if there was a web sight and let you know I had heard it on TV. I was very much saddened and shocked to find out IZ had passed away in June. He made beautiful music. My husband and I send our deepest sympathy to his family.

My sympathy to your family for the loss of such a great artist, person and role model to many. I am a student at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, Ca. I am a junior and am currently taking a course during Jan-Term 1998. Today is 1-14-98, and I am writing first and foremost to the family with my condolenses. Secondly, I write to you because in this particular English course, we write about someone that has touched our life in one way or another. I chose the late Israel Kamakwiwo’ole. I humbly come to your family asking for your help that I may complete this biography, with your permission, on the life of the late Israel. I have lived in Hawai’i all my life, mainly in Waipahu, and am a graduate of the class of 1995 from Waipahu High School. For my research, I have been fortunate to obtain articles from the Net from Star Bulletin and from izlife.html, however, I ask of your assistance, if possible, in helping me remember Iz. I understand this request comes not at a good time, therefore I will understand if you do not reply. My name again is Monalisa Siofele, and you may reach me by email at: ms0008@uop.edu, or writing to me at 3601 Pacific Ave., Building DDD Stockton, CA 95211 If you would like to speak with me, you can call me at (209) 946-9315, and I will call you back as soon as possible. Again, thank you for your time and I hope that God’s spirit be with you and your family this new year. Take care and God Bless you all….Mona.

2 years ago, I listened to IZ’s album Eala E. I had a very strong impression. I felt ancient Hawaiian soul or spirit on him. He is the one of the great singers of the world. But he died. It’s very very sad thing to me. Always great persons shall be destined to die young. I will study abroad to Hawaii next June from Japan. I hope to see good person in my life. I pray for the repose of IZ’s soul. Thanks,

My family and I “discovered” Iz’s music on our visit to Maui in 1996, when we bought Facing Future. We fell instantly and deeply in love with this great man. Two years later and I still play that album with affection and longing for more Iz. Before leaving the islands we bought E Ala E and loved that too. I recently received N Dis Life for Christmas and am playing it now – just super! We were so saddened to hear of the passing of this wonderful talent. We were hoping to see him in person on our next trip to Hawaii this summer. We will always hold his music and his message deep in our hearts. With much love and respect to Iz.

My family is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of one of Hawai’i’s true sons. I remember listening to old home made tapes of the Makaha Sons of Niihau playing at Hank’s Place made by a good friend of mine when he used to hang out there with his uncle Bubbles. The lives Bruddah Iz touched with his music and strength will be forever enriched, but we must trust in the Lord’s plan that he is now in a better place. Aloha au ia ‘oe e Israel. -Puna

Aloha no….howzit….Bruddah IZ is the best thing that happend to the Hawaiian Islands. After reading some of the comments written here, my whole body went chick’n skin. I’m 17 yrs. old, and still remember the day when the sad news came about to my household. Bruddah IZ will always live forever in my heart and mind. And I’m sure to everyone else. Bruddah had so much ALOHA for the ‘aina, keiki’s, and kanaka’s. His music will live forever. I remember one day, playing his music when some “haole” friends were at my house and THEY could feel the mana and aloha that he would sing in every one of his songs. And when we would play Hawaii 78, they felt the pain as we do every time we hear the song. BRUDDAH……U GET AND DESERVE ALL THE ALOHA WE CAN OFFER YOU AS THE WAY U HAD GIVEN US……..RIP HAWAIIAN!!!!!! LOVE U BRUDDAH!!

Although, I moved from my island home in 1995, my heart has always been in Hawaii. Hearing of your passing, was such a shock! I have always been a fond admirer of your talent and your character. I have a video that was done by KGMB called Hawaiina Music/Hawaiian Hearts and watch it often to remember your great talent. My heart goes out to your family and may your memory live forever in the hearts of everyone who loves Hawaii.
