To Israeland his famaly, Over spring break my step father who is hawaiian took us to Hawaii. There I was exposed to the hawaiian culture and music. I got Israel’s Cd “Facing Future” after hearing the song Maui Hawaiian Suppa Man on a helicopter tour. I like the album alot. Even though i am not hawaiian and did not know of him while he was alive, i think he was a great person, and really like his music.

I just heard Israel’s voice for the first time today. It was his recording of Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World. I sat in awe of the power and delicacy of his voice and how he made these songs, so connected with the original artists, his own. I came on the Internet to find out more about this singer and was so saddened to see that he had passed away in 1997. I will try and find the album Facing Future so that I can have that track available to me.
My condolences to the family.

On the eve of this millennium’s passing…. Some things endure past time itself… Such is the collective love of this wonderful artist. Reading the messages on these pages renews my faith in humanity. Iz has the power to make people express their love openly and honestly for another human being. Thank you, Iz, for creating such love.

Aloha keepers of the memories. I’m So glad to find this site. I was away when he died and cried so hard when I heard. Iz touched and inspired our lives deeply, richly. His olelo makes me chicken skin still and melts the pilikia of the day. Blessings of aloha to his ohana. It’s hard to loose a loved one – especially when they are so awesome. Please know that his aloha is felt here, so far from Hawai’i nei, but so close in heart.

I only just discovered Izzy’s music this past year, and am greatly saddend to discover that he has passed and will be making no more music for us folks who remain here. His voice suggests innocence, the sadness that comes from keeping one’s eyes wide open, and an almost otherworldliness. The production values on Facing Future were remarkably good. I am sending Facing Future to freinds and loved ones, that they too might share and grow from his influence.

I heard this 30 second commercial on tv for e toys and I was moved to the point that I had to find out who it was. Imagine my surprise when I found out that the voice belonged to a 700 pound Hawaiian. I’m having a hard time writing this letter, because I’m weeping like a child. When I found out that this human being has past on, I couldn’t believe that 30 seconds could move a person so much. The more I read, the harder it got. My wife had to finish typing this letter for me. And I’m quite embarassed, to say the least. This is the first time that I have written a fan letter to anyone. I really wish that I could have met him. Well, I’ll be telling everyone about this cd. Because I’m usually joking and laughing, and they will find this very interesting that I have been so moved by another human being. Our hearts to out to you and your family. The Barry’s

In early November, we visited Kaua’i for the first time. During a vist to Kapaa, we purchased the “Makaha Sons of Ni’ihau” CD–had no idea of the group’s background or the content on the CD. What a wonderful choice we made! Often, we listen to the enchanting music and vocals, close our eyes, and we are back on Kaua’i.–made all the more meaningful now that we know “Bruddah IZ.”

I was very sorry to learn a few minutes ago while searching the Search Engine for Iz. that he had passed away on June 26th. I had bought his albun Facing Future while visiting Hawaii a few years ago. His warm warm voice and songs has made it one of the best albums I own which I play quite often for myself and to my visiting friends. Living in Montreal,Canada, I have not been able so far able to find out if Izrael had made other albums. That was why I decided to search for some info on the web. His passing away so young really gave me a shock. I Hope in the future to puchase a few more albums. My deepest sympathy to all the familyé

Thank you for hosting this site. Iz’s music has nourished my love for the islands, my place of growing up, my heart home. I was gifted to see him in person at the Shell some years ago when he performed impromptu and continue to love his music both solo and with Makaha Sons, my all time favorite group. He was a treasure in the islands and sorely missed.

I first heard Iz’s music (Somewhere over the rainbow) in the credits for a movie but I couldn’t remember which movie it came from. The funny thing is I began to hear the same song for the e-toys TV ads. It drove me crazy because I loved the song. The voice and music was so beautiful. I researched and dug around for quite a while and finally figured out it was from “Meet Joe Black.”
It was easy from there and I found out that Iz did the music and further research brought me to this site.
I’m sorry to find out that he had passed away. We are lucky to have his music with us. It’s wonderfull!

Today it is one year since my Mom passed away. She introduced me to IZ and I loved it from the first note. She died of lung cancer and had his song N Dis Life played at her memorial service. I am grateful for having such a mother of mine. I am also grateful she had me listen to IZ as I continue to do so. I feel such a sense of pride that I hear his music in Movies and commercials. It brings me back to my Mom and the memories that have me miss her and I am sure those two have been singing up a storm up there and having good fun. I pray that IZ continues to touch hearts and lives like he had mine and that we all come to Christ as he and my Mom had before they passed.

I just recently saw the movie “Meet Joe Black.” We missed it in the theater and had rented the film to view at home. I am usually one to become disinterested in the movie as soon as the credits start rolling, but it was different in this case. When I heard the music start to play, I was totally mesmerized by it. Somewhere Over the Rainbow and What A Wondeful World are two of my alltime favorite songs, but I had never heard the the songs performed that way. It literally brought me to tears. Bravo.

I am so thankful that was a lucky person to have known uncle Israel personally. I am the daughter of Sam Gray one of the original members of the original Makaha Sons of Ni’ihau! When ever he came to the Big Island he made sure that he either visited or called to let us know of his presence. He is such a special person to me and a role model. Even though I am only 15 years old, I aspire to go into the music industry. He made such an impact on people’s lives around the world. He is such a fun loving guy. I remember recieving e-mails from him. I miss him so much. If you never heard his music then you are missing out on a wonderful thing. Rake care god bless, and ALOHA!

To the family of IZ, My intro to Iz was in Newport Beach,CA in 1997. Since this time I have introduced many people to Iz even as far away as Jerusalem,Israel. Of course he was already known there! As a result “In this life” from the album N Dis Life has become our song ( the love of my life ) who lives in Jerusalem, she is Palestinian. Much of the lyrics she relates to very closely as well as warmly. To the Bruddah, Mahala, Aloha- FOREVER HAWAII for YOU !! Leo

I have only recently been exposed to your music, IZ, but I feel as if I’ve known your spirit for a long, long time… I only wish that I could have seen you and heard you in person… your music and voice have touched me like no other in my life, and your words and thoughts are with me constantly… the Lord must have wanted you very badly to take you at such a young age… they must have needed some beautiful Hawaiian music in heaven… mahalo to you for giving me such pleasure… appreciatively…. bob plutte…a Hawaiian at heart

Aloha, Iz and Ohana –
Missing you very much.
I am now on the Mainland, and was listening to your music today while at work. No wonder you are a legend… You say it all! What would the gods say? We did give it all up for the promise of progress and look what we get – mass slayings, and a whole lot of lesser stupidity and sadness.
Auwe!
Ua mau ke ea o ka aina i ka pono!
Your friend, Kawika

I was highly distressed this day to find that Isreal had passed away. My wife, Bonnie and I just recently discovered his loving talents, in the movie “Joe Black.” We then sought out sources for his music. We bought the “Joe Black” cd, then found “Face Future.” We’re sitting in our office listening and I decide to track him down on the internet; then I ran across the “In Memory of” and was jolted from head to toe.
A total stranger touched our hearts and reached down caressing our souls. The simplicity and gentle power will be with us always.
Our sincere condolences are extended to Isreal’s wife, children, family and friends. We share, but cannot begin to feel the true loss of a man of such stature.
Very Sincerely, Buddy Blasingame

Aloha, from Colorado Springs, Co.
As I sit at work my mind started to wonder back to my good bradda (Skippy), Kaimuki High School Days. My wife and I was so priviledge to have met the sons on our various visits back home, (military took us away from the islands.)
Skippy and I were classmates at Kaimuki H.S. Of the times that we would visit, we made a point to catch the Sons performances. I dearly miss both brothers whose music has inspired me to malama hawaiian music. Bradda IZ’s music is so uplifting, that when times are’nt so good his music would change all of it.
Our aloha to the family, for sharing IZ with so many memories and the beautiful music that he willing shared with many of his fans far and near. Gods Blessing to all of you. Reggie and Jeana Kama Colorado Springs

My wife & I, just visited Oahu. Loved the island and the people, but IZ’s music made my trip something very special. I bought ‘Facing Future’ and the music touched me deeply. I was upset to find out about IZ. I have not stopped listening to the music and playing it for anyone who will listen. Gob blessed this man with an ability to touch people with his voice and spirit. I thank Him that I was one who was touched.
Mahalo.

I had to move from Hawaii to Guam for two years it was during this time that we lost Israel, sometimes news doesn’t get to Guam very quickly. It was a couple of weeks after his passing that I heard about it. I all of a sudden felt as if a part of me was also gone. His music truly came from the heart.

As I sit in front of but disregarding the Television late one night in my home so far from Hawaii, a commercial suddenly catches my eye. In it a young boy, fascinated by the ocean, looks in to a tide pool, tentativley slips his finger into the water and then experiences, perhaps for the first time the wonder of the ocean.
But what is it that makes this ad transcend the hundreds of others that flash by each day. And then I realize something wonderful – the music behind the commercial, the music that fits so perfectly with a young boy thrilling to nature and something new – the music is that of Iz singin somewhere over the rainbow.
And I smile, and I realize that some very smart, probably very highly paid writer sitting in a room probably in a high rise city in a far away place, writing an ad for an gian Internet company, this writer too has realized the power of that gentle voice. Its ability to create beauty and love. And aloha.
Thanks Iz. I smiled that night and on into the next day and then again the next. To realize what you gave us.

Kia ora from Whangarei, New Zealand. My husband and I visited beautiful Hawaii in September 1999 as we competed at the Queen Liliuokalani Outrigger canoe race, Kona, Hawaii. As we drove around the Big Island and Oahu we listened to the absolute majestic music of Israel. His music touched our hearts, we bought all the CD’s and now play them to all that visit our home. One of our beautiful memories of Hawaii is the awesome voice of this man, and in all CD players in our home and vehicles is always a copy of his music. To all his family, thank you for sharing his music. Arohanui, Frances and Les Job, Whangarei, New Zealand.

I bought his CD (Facing Future) while I was there. I love the cd and especially the following; the lyrics inside the CD cover of Facing Future, Hawaii 78 Intro, Somewhere Over The Rainbow/What a Wonderful World and Hawaii 78! He will be remembered for more than his beautiful music. My prayers go out to the family and friends. Cynthia Frost

Just wanted to express my Aloha to a ward, dear man. My family had moved to ORegon in 1997 and had been there only days when we heard of Israel’s passing. My sons, aged 7 and 11 at the time were devastated. They had met IZ at various concerts, and even took a picture with him at a concert in Waimanalo to benefit a keiki boxing team. Hui hou, my friend. God bless you and keep you safe.

I heard Israel on National Public Radio profile some time ago and lost the paper where I attempted to write down his name. I’ve been looking for him ever since and found him tonight. I wish to collect all things beautiful for my son, almost three now. He will be moved like I am by that soulful, spiritual voice paired with ukelele. In “Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Israel’s singing flows softly while the strumming is rapid and upbeat. Magic results from the contrast.

I´m from Germany and at my first visit in Hawaai in March 1997 I heard the songs of IZ and I was impressed about this great songs. My second visit in Hawaii in March 1999 was great but I was very sad at the moment I heard the great man IZ was dead. I don´t know this till this time and it was a shock. I think there are not much people in Europe who knows IZ and his message, but the people who know him love him! So I do! It´s great that a lot of people remember him!

Having just moved to Hawaii a month ago, I heard IZ’s music on the radio and fell immediatly in love with it and the person who could sing so beautifully and gently. It was quite a shock to find out that he has died already. If there are midi-files of his music, please send them to me. Thanks. A very sad fan.

My wife and I were vacationing on Kauai when we heard the live version of “White Sandy Beach” on the radio. What a beautiful song, what a beautiful voice! And in the talking he did before starting the song, you could feel the love flowing between the singer and the audience.
I had to have this record! But the announcer never said who the artist was. I vowed I would look it up on the Internet when I got back to the mainland.
Two days later, I was leaving a souvenir shop when a CD display caught my eye. I picked up a CD, “IZ – The Man and His Music”, and turned it over. There it was: “White Sandy Beach”! I couldn’t help but feel I was MEANT to have this CD.
I listened to it out in the car, happy to have found this wonderfful artist, hoping to see him in concert one day. It wasn’t until I read the liner notes that I found out that Iz had passed away.
I wish I had heard you years ago, Iz. I wish I could have met you. I found you and lost you on the same day. But, like all your other fans, I’ll always have your music, which came from your heart, to live inside of mine.

Unfortunately, we never had the chance to see Iz in concert. We have been heavily into contemporary Hawaiian music for a number of years. We have all of Iz’s CDs, and they have been played over, and over, and over!
I wish we would have had the opportunity to see him in concert, but the timing never quite worked out… that would have such a lasting memory.

I just got back from a two week vacation (one on the Big Island, and one on Kauai). I fell in love with his music. I bought three of his CD’s, and only wished I had bought more. I cannot find any here. His voice was beautiful and haunting. He’ll be missed.

I just wanted to say that when I lived in Hawaii, I loved listening to Bruddah Iz sing his Hawaiian music. I remember going to one of his birthday bash concerts at the Shell. I have all of his CD’s and now that I live in Virginia I play them all the time to remind me of my island home.

I just feel compelled to tell yout that just a few days ago my brother david introduced me to the music Of Bruddah IZ only a few days ago. I love the Hawaiian people and have so much respect for the culture. I can’t tell you how much Israels’ music has touched my heart in only a short time. When I hear him sing “White Sandy Beach” with his sweet melodic voice it brings a tear to my eye.

The family took a vacation to Hawaii last week and I picked up “IZ IN CONCERT”. I saw his CD’s all over. I wondered who this guy was! I decided to buy a tape for myself and was pleasantly suprised how much myself and my family enjoyed it. We have been back to the mainland now for about a week and we are still listening to it. I hope I can find his other work here. I didn’t even know IZ had passed away until I read the jacket in the tape. I still can’t believe it. I have been a Cecilio & Kapono fan for years and now I have found someone else I can enjoy!! Thank you, Ken Chavez & Family

Comments: I have been privileged to have been able to visit the beautiful Islands of Hawaii each year for the past 16 years and over those years grown to love the “Aina” as my own and have come to regard all my friends in Hawaii as “Ohana”. I first heard Iz’s music when I heard the track ” Hawaiian Supa’man” so I bought the C.D. however I was Fascinated by the lyrics of a song with a reference to “how would the King feel if he were able to come back and see what had happened to his beautiful free land. This gave me a great deal to think about. I was in Hawaii when the Proclomation was made and I decided to learn more about the Hawaiian Heritage and about the Great man Israel Kamakawiwo’ole. I have many happy memories of my visits to Hawaii but I also have a big regret that I did not meet Iz. I was very fortunate to be given another CD by my friend Gavin Kaina ( he too is a musician and singer) he gave me the Original recording of “Hawaii ’78”. I know that the message from Iz will get stronger and stronger and that The memory of Iz will live forever through his music. “Ua mau ke ea o ka’aina i ka pono”

Words cannot describe what I felt, saw and spiritually connected….one of those rare moments in life when you are one with the sea, the universe and timelessness. Israel Kamakawiwo’ole is able to touch something in a person that cannot be put in words alone. I only wish I understood the beautiful language so that I would also know what the words mean. No matter, I felt them. Thank you I.Z….but you already know how much you touched me.

Comments: Hi. I visited Hawaii recently. Walked into a Tower records there. Saw this CD by this HUGE guy called IZ. I had never heard of him before. I casually listened to the second trak on his CD (IZ: The man and his music). I had seen the cover already and was kinda thinking this would be some crap. But…as soon as I heard him talk and then…SING!…I was amazed! His voice soared… I then read the cover and learned of his death…so here I am. I have only known his music and spirit for a short while but realize that a great man has been lost…wise and kind and generous. Mahalo Israel for your music and kindness…and back to God you go and to the angels… “Hawaiian to me is a feel of getting somewhere without stepping on anybodies toes…growing up…screwing up…remembering that a screw up is a test in life…” I miss you and I have only know you for a few days… Mark

Comments: I’ve been following Bruddah IZ and his music for the last seven years of his life. People used to think I was obsessed with this man and his music. It is true what people said on TV when he died. The fact that future generations won’t be able to enjoy his music in person, where you really felt the love. My family, my friends, everybody said I was crazy. Everything was IZ this, IZ that. Until I invited some members of my family and some friends that I work with to join us at one of Israel’s concerts. It sure was then that they felt his love, his compassion, his love for ohana, and just everything I talk about. Believe it or not, guess who was dancing at the concert when Bruddah IZ sang Margarita? Guess who was yelling when Bruddah IZ sang songs about life, like “In this life” and “Lover of Mine”. Not me!! My most treasured memory of Bruddah IZ was when we went to his concert at the Kona Surf Convention Center in Keauhou Kona and my son, who is physically challenged and uses a wheelchair, was one of his special guests. We got a special pass to sit up front near stage and Bruddah IZ dedicated the song “Kamalani” to him. He also made this comment about my son having the fastest wheel chair in Kailua-Kona. It made me feel good that someone as great as he is, would recognize my son. Believe it or not, the “MANA” filled the room. Inside the concert, being so loud, my son fell asleep in his wheelchair right after he ended the song. That moment I wi

Comments: I learned a few things during his last year on earth. Spent time on IZ Chat and understand that his music success came from self study and sweat equity. Nobody taught him how to play or perform. The most important thing I learned is his definition of being Hawaiian. “Being Hawaiian is getting ahead in life without stepping on anybody’s toes.” What better way to put it? Awesome! My professional lifestyle includes his philosophy and I it gives me great motivation to perform as an Ambassador to Hawai’i here in Long Island, New York. It has also motivated myself to promote the sport of Surfing here in NY. I have an IZ sticker on my Longboard and it reminds me of his definition of being Hawaiian. It’s the way one conducts himself/herself when no one is watching. His memory lives on in my life. Mahalo for the great music and openess you have given me. A hui hou kakou! Comments: Yeah, I’m one of those white tourists who has only been to Hawai’i once. But I was blessed to have been able to peddle all over Kaua’i, through the mountains, in misty rainstorms and bright sunlight. Then I was even more blessed to have heard Israel in a “Best of Hawai’i” concert at some fancy hotel in Lihue. All the locals were there…it was *their* hotel that night. And I walked away with my favorite memory of Hawai’i and one of my most treasured CD’s: Israel’s “Facing Future. Before…and since then…I’ve been following and supporting the Hawai’i sovereignty movement, for which Israel provides a heart and soul. Haole’s – let’s get with it. Support a Hawai’l free to determine its own future. See http://www.hawaii-nation.org to get started! Brother Iz IS the “Hawaiian Superman”! Rest in peace! /eric

I was immediately struck by first his voice and, by the time the credits had finished, his soul. I’ve fallen in love with this man. I’m a musician who plays traditional Irish and Breton music and I’m not familiar with Hawaiian music at all, but Israel’s music is astounding! Never have I heard a voice so pure, sweet and honest. I’ve become an instant fan. I’m so sorry to hear that Israel has passed on and I’ve missed the opportunity to hear him perform live, but I know he’s is still making music somewhere. But it was not the version that is on the Ka’Ano’i CD. I have done a search on his other CD, including the most recent one of Iz in Concert, and do not see Somewhere over the rainbow on any other CD’s. The one we originally heard was Iz accompanied by his ukelele. That’s it. His voice is incrediable. It flys and takes you with him. If you are familiar with that version could you please tell me how to get it. My husband and I would very much appreciate any information you could give us on getting that recording. Thank you. Comments: Here I am, an Island girl now living near Lake Michigan. My sista sent me 2 of Bruddah Iz’s CDs for my 40th birthday and I’ve been listening to “Facing Future” over and over again. I never saw Bruddah Iz perform in person but I feel like I know him from listening to the “Hawaii ’78 introduction” (why is this song called ‘Hawaii ’78’ ?). All of the songs are beautiful, especially the ones with the ukulele solos, but “Kaulana Kawaihae” and “Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World” give me chicken-skin the most. Even though I live here now, this will never be home. HOw can be when you was born and raised in Hawaii, yeah? Bruddah Iz is my connection home. He make me cry. And outside stay almost snowing. (This pidgin is “home talk”. I no can talk like dis here. Ass why listening to Iz is like being home.)

Comments: I remember when Bruddah IZ and family were living in the same building as my parents, back in the days when I was just visiting from college and later from work in Los Angeles. I never knew the man personally, but he was always so warm – sharing the genuine aloha spirit. I was so happy to find his CD in Virginia, that I immediately bought it and shared it with my commrades in ministry that summer of 97. I was very saddened to hear of IZ’s passing. My prayers are with the family members. And I know that IZ is with the Lord now. I shall always treasure the wonderful music that IZ shared with us all, which helps me through some cold nights in Princeton as I study late in the night, readying myself for the work of God. Thanks bruddah IZ for your wonderful music. God be with you, until we meet again… Aloha and Mahalo!

Comments: Dearest Family of Israel, I was so pleased to find this website. My husband was born in Hawaii and comes from a family of seven children. We both love Hawiian music but there is nothing that compares to the music of Israel. We live in Laugna Beach, California in a cottage by the sea. We call it the cottage of the angels and when I first heard Israel sing I told Al this man has the voice of an angel. We play his music at least twice a week just to keep our lives in perspective.. Our hearts our broken that this incredible human spirit had to leave this earth at such a young and promising age but we also believe God takes the young because they were only to be here a short time to leave a legacy and teach the rest of us mortal humans lessons that will allow us to evolve and pass on a similar legacy of understanding, compassion and love. He will always be a guiding light and the most beautiful of all angels that come into our home. We hope your life is filled with fond memories and and the aloha we feel when we listen to his music. I am saddened to hear that IZ has passed before I got a chance to know of him while he was alive, and yet I accept the importance of death in our lives. It is a reminder of the precious treasure we have been freely given to make something out of nothing, to experience but a moment in the sun, if not more. I have a wonderful collection of music to explore, thanks to one who made the effort to sing loud and clear while the opportunity to do so was his. Thanks IZ, wherever you are, Eric

IZ and his brahdah Skippy was eating breakfast at the Tip Top Hotel. The last time i seen him was at his concert in Northern California. We drove 2 hours to see the legend. I got an autograph from him, but couldn’t speak. I was in total awe, and the “Mana” around this man was unbelieveable and that kept me speechless. I wish i could have spoken to IZ. I would have told him that his voice and music keeps me “Home”. Even if i now live in America, his music and voice brings me “Home” always. Hawai’i will always be “Home” and IZ’s music and voice will always be “HAWAI’I”. Mahalo Nui Loa Brahdah IZ

I was particularly touched by “Johnny Mahoe”, and my 10-year-old son loved it. As soon I came back home, I logged on the internet trying to find more information about IZ. A strange feeling of sadness invaded me when I found out that IZ has left this earth in June of 1997. His music really touched me and I guess it will touch more people for ages. IZ, from the little I know about you, I feel that you must have been a very special person.
