Yesterday, (12/25/00)I discovered IZ. I have been enamored with his rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” since I first heard it in the eToys commercial. I didn’t know who performed the song. I only knew that it was magical. I was given the Facing Forward CD as a Christmas present. The entire album is wonderful. I’m grateful that I have been given the chance to hear the music of this amazing and talanted man. I’m just sorry that I wasn’t blessed sooner. Peace, Sheila

My husband gave me one of Israel’s CD’s for Christmas, and it is beautiful. I’m embarassed to say that it was the e- toys commercial that peaked our interest. His voice was so clear and wonderful. We are enjoying it, and think your website is a loving tribute. He is not forgotten. We hope his family is well.

Aloha!

I have been to the Hawaiian islands 3 times and each time I return, I feel like I am coming home. The last time I was there, I studied Lomilomi under Aunty Margaret Machado. It was while I was there on the Big Island that I was introduced to Bruddah IZ’s music. After I become Nationally Certified in Therapeutic Massage, I plan to return to the Hawaiian islands to give back to Hawaii what it has given to me.

Iz’s “Facing Future” is one of my favorite CD’s. I played “Hawai’i 78” for my mainland(NJ)massage classmates and they became “IZ converts”!!!

Hawaii 78 has become my “mantra”. Through IZ’s music, I return to Hawaii spirtually/musically, if not physically.

Israel,

Your music is wonderful. I am so grateful for the music you gave the world. It is truly beautiful. You were such a talented man. Your music ranges from achingly moving to fun and lively. Your voice was also wonderful. Your music tells the world that you were indeed a special person. Sadly, you left this world too early. I hope that where you may be, you are singing and playing to your heart’s content. ~Susan

I never knew Iz from live performances, in fact, by the time I came to know and love his music, he was gone already. Physically anyway. The little things I heard about his life encouraged me so much, his statement “When you t’ink no can… can.” has brough me through so much in life with it’s simple wisdom, put in a way an island boy could understand. I am far from “home” now, living in a mainland that is cold in many ways. One consolation I have on homesick nights, is to play Iz’s music. Then I can close my eyes and go home little while. When Iz talks story and jokes on his CDs the pidgin and sense of humor reminds me of friends I have known and lost contact with. But for that moment I am back home. Ans I am happy and lighter inside. Iz, you truly fulfilled your purpose in life, God bless the day you discovered you wanted to play music. The world is a much lighter place because of you. The only other performer i can think of that has an impact like you with your message and depth is Bob Marley. I hope you two get a chance to meet up in heaven and talk story little bit.

One evening while driving on the road I was listening to a National Public Radio program which featured one of Iz’s songs. It touched me deeply. Unfortunately, I did not remember his name. That was quite some time ago.

Today, I heard his music played at the funeral of a friend and colleague. Again, I was touched by his music. After the funeral, I ordered one of his CDs and found this memorial site. I look forward to enjoying the treasure of his gift of music.

Thanks for maintaining this memorial.

I am listening to Hawaii’78 while I am reading about the loss of Israel Kamakawiwo’ole. I never knew of him before hearing the eToys commercial. Now I have tears in my eyes for missing him.

My wife and I went to Hawaii in ’96 for our 10 yr anniversary. It was a highlight for me as I always wanted to see the Islands. I wished that I knew of him then and found an opportunity to see him.

Somewhere over the rainbow…

Whenever I listen to his mele, I alwayz get chicken skin, and some times even tears. IZ, Mahalo Nui for all da memories. You will be missed but never forgotten.
Hawaiian-ness to me is getting somewhere with out stepping on anybodies toes, with causing friction with anybody……that one statement he made on his last CD will be with me mau o mau.

I first heard “Somewhere Over the Rainbow/Wonderful World” years ago, driving alone late at night from somewhere bleak to somewhere worse. The recording immediately brought tears to my eyes because of its simple beauty, originality and creativity, and because of the obvious soulfulness of the singer.

But I never knew who I had heard that night, and as the years went on I forgot all about it.

eToys.com uses a rendition in their television commercials, as I’m sure everyone (but me) knew. I started seeing the commercials and hearing the music a while back, and it haunted me…but I could not for the life of me remember where I had heard it before.

I finally went to their website, found the e-mail address of the Communications Manager, and sent him an e-mail asking about it…never once thinking he would actually reply.

Last night I received an answer, and after seeing the song name(s), I recalled that miserable midnight from long ago, and was overjoyed that I could get a copy for my own.

But now I’ve spent a little time trying to learn more about this amazing musician, partially because I am a musician myself and can hear when someone is putting their heart and soul into the simplest of things, partially because the more I read about him, the more I wonder if he really was a mortal, or a messenger of sorts.

Forgive my ignorance about him, forgive me for never being able to really participate in his native culture as an outsider, forgive me for writing such a long entry…but I felt the urge to reach out to others who are mystified by this incredible person.

I have just returned from a trip to Hawaii. While in Kauai I walked into a music shop in Hanalei. Although I loved listening to the local music on the radio stations I wasn’t familiar with any Hawaiian musicians names. I stood in front of a large section of CD’s and the second I laid eyes on IZ’s beautiful face I knew that he was a very special person. I saw gentleness, beauty, strength, pride, character…a very unique individual. I purchased “Facing Future” and again, the second I heard his voice I was swept away in his voice and his message. Before I left I purchased his video and E ALA E. I have listened to his music everyday. It is like healing balm upon my mind and soul. I feel tremendously blessed to have found him. When I think of IZ and his life and music I feel his spirit. He will truly live on forever. God sends these people to those of us who have such a difficult time showing and knowing love. He was love and I felt it. My deepest condolences to his wife and daughter and all his family. The world is a better place for IZ’s presence. What an incredible man. He has touched so many lives and will be in our hearts forever. Mahalo.

i often listen to Iz sing La Elima on my way to work in the construction business in NW Lower Michigan and think to myself, “If I could marry Israel Kamakawiwo’ole I would dump my wife.” -Myron
My Husband is half Hawaiian. Me, I’m Norweigen. However, my name is formally Margaret and that is Margarita in Hawaiian. I love Iz’s “Margarita” song. Myron’s middle name is Kainoa, like in that “Kainoa” song. I really like that one. Allso, Myron played “White Sandy Beach” when we were first falling in love. 🙂

My mama s family is from Molokai, and I have to say that she think Iz rules. I first heard Iz do Gabby’s Hiilawe in a Borders book store after he had passed away. I cried. I bought the CD and took it home to my mom and since that time she has been his gotten all his stuff. I grew up listening to Makaha Sons Of Nii’hau and never knew Iz would be the greatest musical inspiration in my life.

I was in Hawaii last year and heard “Hawaiian Supa Man” and spent the entire year trying to find the creator of that song. I have the first of several CD’s of Izzy’s I intend to purchase. He transports you to the islands with his lush and powerful vocals and beautiful arrangements. It is a shame he is not still with us creating more beautiful music. My condolences to his ohana and Mahalo for his accomplishments. He has left a lasting gift to the world.

I picked up a CD of various Hawaiian artists this last visit to the islands and IZ was one of the artist featured. His absolutely stunning song “Hawai’i ’78” was on the CD. I was soooooooo moved, touched, in awe or not only this song but of the sweet and glorious voice that relayed these words with song….. I decided that I had to have a complete CD of this voice so I got on the net to try and find some of his music…. I was extremely saddened to find that he making music in heaven. Isn’t the heavenly choir blessed!!! Thank you for sharing your loved one with all of us…… bless you all Mahalo Tracy

I first heard IZ’s music on a helicopter ride that my sister and I had taken on the Island of Kaui. When we first took off they were playing Somewhere Over The Rainbow. It had brought tears to our eyes. When the tour was over we went to little shop on the grounds of the helicopter tour and inquired about the music we had heard. We were delighted to learn that we could purchase the music in CD or cassette tape. My sister and I took that speical trip in August of 1999 and I still get that warm feeling of sweet memories of Kaui evertime I play the CD.

Israel has been an inspiration to my life. It took me so long to write in this guest book because i was trying to think of something unique to show that i thought he was the Hawaiian God of Music. His accomplishments and his way of living and playing has kept me, like many, on the ukelele. He will never even begin to see the difference he has made in my live. “In Dis Life” he was loved by me.

Just back from my honeymoon in Hawaii.

I never heard of IZ before. I first heard the intro to “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” on the eToys commercial, and each time thought to email eToys – not about toys, but about who’s angelic voice was dancing with the ukelele during their choice of an advertising jingle. I never got around to emailing. I sometimes forgot who’s commercial it was, but I always ran to the TV whenever that song played. My now-wife would laugh at me when I would say “isn’t that wonderful – who is that voice singing such a pretty tune?” I didn’t even identify it as “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”

While we were in Kaui’i for our honeymoon, I was leaving the Princeville Market and walked past a CD sales booth located just outside the door. My wife was in the car looking at me as I walked toward her. It was then that “that tune” was playing at the CD booth, and I stopped in my tracks. I turned and said “who is this, what song is this, and where can I get it?” My wife later said “what was it that made you turn around so fast?” It was IZ.

The woman behind the booth explained to me all about Bruddah IZ, and how after the 3 years since his death he is still one of the top selling artists in the Hawaiian Islands. I purchased “Facing Future”, and came home eager to play it.

Never before have I cried when listening to a song, but I cried when I heard his voice sing words. I cried a lot. I don’t usually cry about anything. Just from the little I knew about him I realized the magnitude of his contribution to this world. His voice is alive, and spoke to me like no other singer ever. How sad that such a spirit left this Earth after a mere 38 years.

In the last week I have learned much more about him from the Internet, and I am saddened all the more for his loss. Such a spirit, such a voice, such a heart… one needs not to have met him in person to feel him. I feel as if I met him, and KNOW him. Maybe he knows me… but he lives in me. Hard to explain to people who don’t feel, but I know any reader of this will know exactly what I mean.

To the curator of this information – thank you and please continue your work. I am glad to have a place to put my feelings, and many more will follow from others. To his family – know that IZ’s spirit lives on worldwide, speaking to souls everywhere, including here in Eastern Pennsylvania. He is a remarkable man, and probably has an equally remarkable family.

IZ speaks to my soul every time I listen to him. I have taught myself “Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World” and cannot wait to play it on my guitar and sing it like IZ for all who will listen. When they will ask I will share what I know… all the good that I have heard about him.

Live On, IZ

My Aloha is because of him on that beautiful day at the look out point just before sandy beach looking toward the east. Not a day passes by without me getting chicken skin from listening to his music. I have his spirit with me . He makes me Hawaiian, his music, what he sings about . I feel his music and his spirit. I wish i could have met him in person, but i was too late and have to see him only in spirit as i live in Hawaii. Bruddah IZ, a true Hawaiian. I am reading the guest book while listening to Iz’s album, “n Dis Life,” and misting up. I only recently became aware of Iz and his incredible voice, spirit and musicianship. Thank God for recordings. Hawaiian people certainly should take pride in Iz. But a talent like his is so great, it belongs to the entire world. He is to Hawaiian music what Mozart was to European music, what Sinatra was to mainland US music. God rest his soul. If there is an afterlife, I hope I get to meet him.

I must admit that I found out about this talented man accidentally while searching the net for Hawaiian music to use for my answering machine in order to promote a group trip to Hawaii. When one of Iz’ numbers came up, I instantly became hooked. Though I never knew of him in life, the music that he shares has brought me to know and love this wonderful Giant of a Human Being.

May God Bless his family with the knowledge that Iz is in a truly better place.

During a brief visit to Kona I heard Iz while looking for some Hawaiian music that would help me explain the difference in cultures of the world. The first Iz song that I hears, Ahi Wela (Tinkle Twinkle Little Star) from “Iz, The Man and His Music” almost brought tears to my eyes. It was the example that I sought. The blending of Hawaiian and English in this old favorite was very powerful. My four year old girl now understands that despite many language and cultural differences and physical appearances… we are all one.

To Iz, who I know hears me now, I say Mahalo, you remain a gift to us all.

While on my honeymoon with my wife Kathleen, June, 1999, we heard some terrific music on a local channel in Oahu.

Not knowing who the artist was, we heard the same song on a helicopter ride on the Big Island. I sang some of the song and the pilot told me quickly “Oh, thats Brother Iz”.

We bought facing the future, and everyday since then, every day, I play his music. What a wonderful world. Sad that this “giant” of a man is no longer with us. God bless him and his family.

Although I am very young, my recent senior trip to Hawaii was a most touching and memorable experience. I met a wonderful tour guide there named Darren Akau, who taught me about and showed me the magnificant Hawaiian islands, popped in a tape and told me to listen to the words. My trip was only made complete when hearing Hawai’i ’78 in a car. The beauty and gentlness in Israel’s voice and message touched me deeply. I left with a new appreciation for the people, culture, land, and certainly this great artist. I listen to his songs daily and am delighted that God shared such a wonderful man with us. He taught me “what a wonderful world” this really is. I thank him for his music and send my best wishes to his family. He was a beautiful person.

Bruddah Iz was a symbol of what it means to be hawaiian. He captured everybody’s hearts once you heard him sing. I remember the last concert I saw bruddah Iz performing. It was at the 1996 Downtown Ho’olaule’a and I cherish the experience I had when I listened to him sing. I always got chicken skin and still do when I hear his songs. That night was special for me because I had just graduated from high school about to start college. I remember his songs giving a message of hope to us young hawaiian people. He made realize that to live my life to the best way I can. To cherish life while you’re alive. Love everyone. I will always think of him as the hawaiian superman. I know it’s been four years since he has past but I always think of him when I hear his songs on the radio. My family and I give our condolences to you all. We wish you the best and congratulations on the birth of his granddaughter. I read the story in the Midweek a couple of months ago. Everyone will remember him always. Bruddah Iz will live on in all of our hearts. Mahalo nui loa, malama pono ‘oukou, Aloha Hau’oli Ho’opi’i a me ‘Ohana!

I just recently discovered Iz and his music on a visit to Kuaui and Maui. I have purchased some of his CDs. I play them in the car and for my family. His music is devine and angelic. My mother is 80 and very conservative. She has requested an IZ cd or tape as a gift. This is a tribute to the timeless talent and appeal of a fine artist. I only wish I had discovered his music sooner.

I was a visitor from Germany in the year 1995 at the first time on Oahu, and I heared the music of IZ, it was a great feeling to hear his voice and his music. I love this very much and it sooths my heart in the cold and grey Germany. Every year I was back on Hawaii to visit my son and IZ and the music of Hawaii and the Aloha. Thank you Israel for all your love you gave to the world with your special kind of music.

You are deep in my heart now for ever

Ihave spent a lot of time in Hawaii,my wife is a local girl having grown up right below Kam. School. I was introduced to Iz’s music shortly after he passed on. Few musicians have had such an effect on me as Iz has had. Growing up in Conn. my only thought of Hawaii was that it was some place I saw on tv, having visited the islands eight or nine times I now understand what why it is so important to preserve what is left of the culture,Iz’s music helped me to see and understand this.

My name is Fred Jackson and I am a musician/songwriter in Cleveland,Ohio. I heard “Bruddah IZ” for the first time on the “Meet Joe Black” soundtrack and was deeply moved by the Somewhere over the rainbow/What a wonderful world medley. It caused me to look for more information on the man. I am sorry to learn of his passing,we are a much lesser place without him. I learned of his gentle nature through the internet and can only think “Who else but a gentle man with the voice of an angel could have done such a remarkable piece of music” Thank you, Bruddah IZ. Many of my family members lived on Oahu for many years, myself included. I loved it the minute I stepped of the airplane for the first time. I have grieved leaving it for over 20 years.

I always loved contemporary Hawaiian music, Robert and Roland Cazimero, Keola and Kepona Beamer, Gabby, Bla, … I could go on an on. And then I discovered Iz. I loved his music and soul immediately. I mourn his passing. However, he still lives on in his music

I first heard “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” when Isresl was featured on NPR back in 1996. I thought the song was one of the most beautiful I’d ever heard. I missed the artist name and as time went by forgot about it. Last night I watched “Meet Joe Black”, heard the song, found the artist and went to the net to search. I found the song, downloaded it and wanted more. Further searching found his music catalog and where I could order a CD. And then I found the tributes. I am so saddened to learn that IZ is no longer with us. The song still moves me deeply. He is missed before I ever got to know him. Jim

I felt so awkward when I discovered that this artist, that I enjoyed immensely the very first time I heard one of his songs, was deceased. I must have been in the clouds or something but I regret this loss of such a fine musician. I was thinking of buying a ukelele and learning the chords for “somewhere over the rainbow”. That is how I ended up on this web site. Would it be possible to get the music for this song so that I could play it myself, for fun? Any help would be appreciated. Again, I am sure that I share this loss with many and will continue to listen to his music and remember.

Being a local boy that has not been home for a long time, the only real ties of home was my own cooking that became mainland style, the Honolulu magazines, etc. But it was the music of Bruddah IZ that made me feel at home. NOT really the music but the TRUE ALOHA that he ALWAYS “GAVE”. He was and is the real ALOHA. I will miss his aloha but will be thankful for the memories he has shared through his music. I was able to see the television tribute to home and although I was not there I could feel the love and aloha that the islands had for bruddah IZ. All people truley loved him.

Iz Was one of my Favorite Hawaiian Singers, it was a great loss when he died. I lived in Hawaii for 8 years, and I loved His music, at one time I had all his CD’s but as I came back to the mainland, they were lost and stolen. I plan to colect them again, as soon as I can. God Bless Brother Iz, for he was a really good and soothing singer. My Favorit song was “White Sandy Beach”.

Bruddah IZ~ Although you never knew me, through listening to your music, commentary and jokes, I knew you. God blesses individuals with special and unique gifts and talents upon their births. Many people go through life wondering what their purpose on this earth is. You were a truly gifted soul and touched the hearts of not only the people of Hawaii, but also the world. I know that you were taken because your purpose in life was fulfilled. You left us with many great memories and great recordings. Recordings that we will share with future generations. We will miss you, but since this life on this earth is temporary, someday, we will all see you again. Your memory lives on in dis local.

Aloha,

Iz truely had a special gift of spreading his Aloha spirit I feel it every time I listen to his music. Wind beneath my wings/ He Hawai’i Au touches me every time I hear it, cause it talks about a man who has to leave his home Hawai’i, enenthough his soul and heart will always be in hawai’i and he could never turn his back on it, this is my exact position. I hope one day I can go home and study Hawaiian studies and help the Hawaiian people. Rest in peace Bruddah IZ you truely are the man!

Bruddah IZ will always be remembered as a beautiful man with a loving heart. When my husband and I moved from Hawaii to Colorado in 1994, we brought along all of his cd’s and played it where ever we went. People were always interested in who that was with the most beautiful voice that they have ever heard. We moved back home in 1997 to await the birth of our 1st daughter. On June 26, 1997 my husband and I were celebrating our 4th wedding anniversary, and we heard over the radio that Iz had passed away that morning. That day will always be in our minds and Iz will always be in our heart.

Words cannot express how his music effected life but I will try: I just returned from Kona Where my sister-in-law lives and she was playing a CD of Israel on the way from the airport the song was “Hawaii 78” and for the next to weeks all I listened to “Facing Future” & “E Ala E” CDs. God has tuely bless him with a gentle and soothing voice. Music like that can only come from the heart, it gives me a peace in my soul. I never knew him personally, but to listen to his music is to know him. He is truly my “bruddah Iz”. Through hes music I see the real pride of Hawaii and it’s people. Though he was a big man, I can’t help but think that it was his heart and soul that was so big that his body could no longer contain it. Through his music he will live forever. Thank you for giving me a new look on life and family and to slow down and enjoy life. God Bless Iz and his Family

Bruddah IZ, You are a magnificent figure and example of an artist. Your music will live on til the day our Lord decides that we have done enough destruction to this paradise he created for us. You are a stunning example of how one man can his talent and touch the entire World. I often wonder how it would feel to know that what you have done in your life, all your accomplishments, and all your inspiring words, have affected an entire World. I might never know how that feels. But you, Israel Kamakawiwo’ole, have definitely done just that. Your gifts, shared with us will leave an everlasting mark on each and every person’s heart and mind who would be so lucky, to be blessed by your aloha thru song. I have always looked up to you as a fellow musician, and as a soldier for the Lord. The Lord has blessed your life through adversity, and will continue to bless the lives of those closest to you. You have done your work here, and now it is your turn to rest in the true paradise that awaits us all who truly believe.

I from Hilo but now live in Ohio. One morning when I called my dad on the phone and he told me what happened with bruddah IZ, it brought me to some tears. For so long listening to his music and growing up on his music it was a tragedy for Hawaii to lose a man on pride of the hawaiians and the hawaiians at heart. He hated no one. He taught me how to live life to the fullest and never forget where I came from. I remember in 1995 he was in Hilo at the crown room and we had a blast, best hawaiian concert ever been too. Anyway IZ was the man and I think there will never be another Hawaiian like him. If it wasn’t for IZ I wouldn’t know how to live being away from Hawaii. We love you Bruddah IZ and you will never be forgotten. Aloha Brah

With the coming of the 3rd Anniversary of Bruddah Iz’s passing, we must take a moment and remember the gentleness this man bestowed upon the people of Hawaii.

Israel Kamakawiwo’ole is truly missed by many people. My husband and I use to live in Waianae, HI but now we live in Laurens, Iowa. But we still listen to great Hawaiian Music especially Bruddah Iz’s music. We miss Hawaii very much, we especially miss the Hawaiian people we were friends with. Each year on the anniversary of Iz’s passing we always play his music throughout the day. That way Bruddah Iz will remain in our hearts.

Much Aloha to the memory of Bruddah Iz and the aloha of his family who miss him dearly,

The Valentine Family of Laurens, IA

I cannot say that I knew anything about Mr. Kamakawiwo’ole or that I am familliar with the music of Hawaii. I came to here him on our Community Radio station KXCI in Tucson after his passing.

But the beauty of a spirit and a voice is something that can be immediately taken into a heart when it is heard. Even as I write this I am moved to tears by just remembering such clarity of voice. My wife, knowing of how moved I have been by that voice ordered one of IZ’s CDs for me. It came yesterday and its music has filled our house since it arrived. It is like a wonderful light.

Thank you for taking time to read my thoughts. David

Israel, (…For Marlene & Wehe) This world spins so fast here in paradise…how i wish i had the chance to tell you the depth and impact you’ve had on your (Hawaiian) people when the world spun too fast. Giving us a “free ride” back to the past and into the present. Your music comforted us, told the story about us, voiced our thoughts and emotions. When we got lost, you’d take us back to where we first began, finding our way into the present… In a big way, your voice thru music blanketed us thru many personal hardships. You made us unashamed of being who we are, a loving & humble people of great character & strength, and gave our children a greater love and respect for themselves. Now they all wanna be as beautiful as you. 3 years and we still cry. Miss you. Hawai’i’s Beloved Native Son. ~Peace.

I thought that I loved Hawaii before hearing IZ, but nothing makes me miss Hawaii more than hearing “MehaMeha/White Sandy Beach” by Makaha Sons with Iz on vocal. My wife and I have worn out “Facing Future” listening to Hawaii 78, and I defy anyone to listen to E Ala E or Wind Under My Wings and not feel what he felt. In any music genre, it is rare that one performer can move so many with simple sounds and lyrics.

I’d like to give my condolences to Marlene and her daughter and I’z Ohana. He has been a big inspiration to all hawaii and beyond.I first had the opportunity to meet bruddah I’z in Kona.I think it was in the early 70’s when they played at the King Kamehameha Hotel. My girlfriend is a personal friend of theirs and Abraham at that time. She jusst moved to Kona from Waimanalo and we became very good friends. Anyway her name was Candy Jones. I must say I think that was the first time I’ve ever seen a live band in my life.Skippy had a big impact on everyone also.Well like everyone knows, there will never been music heard again like I’z.So I am very lucky to have met him and he will always be remembered to all of us.In Dis Life hits me right there everytime I hear it,my father passed away 3 days before Iz and at the time of his death this song was playing, till this very day tears all the time when I hear it.I wish you all the blessings and strength the good lord has in store for each and everyone of us.

While on a cruise of the Islands in ’97 kept catching parts of a haunting song over the ship’s sound system, day and night. Finaly asked a crew member ‘who just sang that last song?’ Thought I meant a different song and gave me another’s name. Disappointed (not with who I discovered) but started my love of Hawai’ian music and a three year search for the unknown song. This past week I returned, heard the song again and found my Hawai’i 78. But learned of Iz’s passing. Starting to read about Israel and listening to more of his gift. Sites like this say a lot more than I can.

I never heard the music before the commercial for etoys… I thought what a cool tune…. then I got the song and my spirit was lifted and all I could do was stare at the walls… This man was an angel and is still reaching our hearts… I wish I had known of him before.. I feel sad that I did not.

I just returned from my first trip to Hawaii (Maui) and Israel’s music was recommended to me. I have two cd’s and play them constantly. I feel a saddness at not knowing Israel personally but deeply feel his presence through his hauntingly beautiful music. I also ordered IZ-the Man and His Music (video) and was so happy to be able to see him perform his beautiful music. He seems to have been very spiritual and I loved his messages to the youth of Hawaii and the world. We were very fortunate to have this beautiful man in our world.

A man with a voice of an angel is gone but not forgotten. I first heard Bruddah IZ’s music in 1992 on my first visit to the big island and was in awe. Although I was never fortunate to see him perform live, I have come to love his music and the message of brotherhood that IZ delivered. There is not a day that goes by that I do not play one of his songs to lift my spirit higher. Such is the music of this Hawaiin Superman. I hope to meet him in a better place. Laters Brah!

While on another trip to Hawai’i (Big Island), I happened to run across Brudda IZ’s album “N Dis Life” I was there attending the Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo(my 3rd time). When I got back to the mainland, I put the tape on me car cassette and played it. It was magic…….never have I heard such sweet music from this special man. It brought tears to my eyes, especially the song “N Dis Life”. I could tell right away that he was a special person. I am sorry to hear that IZ is no longer with us, but I have found this web site, and will go back to it on many occasions. I know it has been 3 years since IZ’s passing, but I am sure he has joined the heavenly chorus and is singing to God. My heartfelt coondolences on IZ’s passing. I am just sorry that I never had the opportunity to see him in concet.

God bless you, his o’hana and friends.

Most Sincerely,

JIOM ROWLAND

Braddah IZ has been a strong influence in the lives of so many people… of all ages. When I speak to people, they speak of IZ as part of their ‘ohana. How beautiful a tribute. Everyone feels he or she is related on some level, and it doesn’t matter.. most of them aren’t Hawaiian! He just had that way about him. When he spoke of “malama da ‘aina”, “malama your ‘ohana”, “malama each other”, and “remember, it’s because of God that we are here, he makes it all possible”….. everyone could relate. He was someone who spoke from experience right to the pu’uwai of others. He gained respect, honor and pride of his peers and fans, near and far. Bruddah IZ, we miss your presence. We continue to sing your songs in your honor at our kanikapilas, here in Central Coast California. Oli, Ola, a me Kealoha a Mau Loa.

I never knew you personally, but my Auntie Inday lived 3 housesd own from you. You used to play and sing for my little cousins, and even sang “Happy Birthday” to Nikki. To this day, whenever I listen to your music, wherever I am, I think of the little cul de sac where I lived in Halawa Valley. I remember my Auntie, who has since passed away. I remember Mr. Hanakai. And the smell of the guava tree and the gardenia bush. With your music, I am never far from home. You have preserved the memories for me. I can only hope that your family knows what you have given to the rest of us.

We are, as Bruddah Iz acknowledged, “Hawaiians at Heart” and it is in our hearts where lies his music and our memories of him. They are carved there forever. We miss him as part of our family and are grateful that his music and his view of life has come into ours. Aloha nui loa, Tony~Nevada

My wife and I were waiting to take a heliocopter ride on the Big Island and while we waited, the tour company played his video. Both of us were in awe,as he expressed through his music why Hawaii continues to call us back. I was told that day he passed away in 1997. Sad, but he is with his family now and he left his music as his legacy for all to enjoy.

Aloha, I have never been as touched in my life by music as I was by that of Bruddah IZ. I was at the funeral viewing in Waikiki and the look as he lay in the casket will last a life time for me. When I was se;ected to sail on the Holuleia from Haleiwa to Waianae I could only feel the mana of the Bruddah. He touched me deeply, and forever. I miss him. Warmest Aloha, Koka Mason

Aloha, my name is ben and i am very fourtunateto have met Isreal in person. it was an honor for me to have met him. my family known him for many years and even my brother, who he goes to school with Isreals daughter ever since preschool days. it was a very great loss to me and the people of hawaii to have such a young man as Isreal pass on before us. at the viewing they had at borthwicks, it was a very touching moment for me as hundreds of people walk in line to pay their last respects to a man that pretty much what hawaii was all about. now, he has been reunited with his brother and all of the other hawaiian entertainers that past on before him. i know god must be enjoying it right now cuz all of the greatest hawaiian musicians is jamming up there. Braddah Iz, we miss you alot.

A hui hou,

From the moment I heard Israel’s music, something touched my heart and I have never been able to stop the emotions that pour from me and my music when I hear his voice. I am a native hawaiian live on the mainland and everytime I heard his voice, I cried for being away from home. To his o’hano, I offer my condolences from the bottom of my heart. As Isarel said “I hope the music touches you.” ” When you have loved one, go away far, ya miss um.” I will miss him forever but his music lives on through all of us. I will be singing his songs unitl the day I die. Goodbye Bruddah, I’ll see you again Aloha Lewis Kaulana Banner

Bruddah IZ, family, and friends, IZ continues to “touch” and influence many people. I will be thankful my entire life for IZ’s voice, music, and philosophy. He helps me everyday to remember living and dying are about breaking down barriers between people. (I found his music in a very unlikely place at a very unlikely time… a visit to a hotel gift shop on my very first visit to Hawaii.) Remarkable because it took me 53 years to get to Hawaii. Thanks to IZ I’ll be back this year (2000) again to take in the spirituality of the islands and IZ. Aloha and Mahalo

I could never express or described how good this man can sing. You would have to hear it to believe it. And I know one thing for sure, he sang with pure heart and honesty. Those 2 words are very difficult to maintain in the music business. But Iz accomplished that and has set a huge role model to myself and many others out there. I’d like to personally “Thank” him for showing me how to put “LOVE” in anything that I want to do in life. He has been and always will be part of me and especially an inspiration in my life. Not a single day have I not cried when I listen to his music. Not a single day have I not cried when I see pictures of him. He will always be “Loved” and remembered for all the “GIVINGS” he has done. Thank You “IZ” and Love You Very Much. Aloha…

As a member of the Oneida Tribe of Indians I feel that all of us indigenous peoples have a connection. When I heard his song “Living in a Sovereign Land ” I really felt connected. I spent some time in Oahu during the ’80’s and really felt at home listening to Hawaiin music. After leaving the island and returning home I really missed the Hawaiin music. I have been back a few times and was saddened the last time I was there brudda Iz had passed during our stay. I remember listening to all the condolences being sent over the radio and watching the tv special. We picked up his “n dis life” tape and really enjoyed it. When we clean the house we always put in his tape and jam. Mahalo brudda for the tunes.

We first heard IZ two years ago and have since purchased all his CDs. We didn’t know that he had passed away by then and were looking foward to new releases.

The other day, our family was driving along the mountain roads of Utah and listening to “Facing Future.”

Listening to IZ sing reminded me of an Angel – and I was right – he is. IZ’s music touched a place inside of us like no other. His music triggered the full range of emotion – from sadness to childish glee. His magic and voice are imprinted in our hearts and souls. He leaves a legacy that will live on forever through his music.

Now we are home, listening to the most beautiful voice and remembering the most beautiful place we’ve ever seen. Thank you, Iz. You brought beauty to the world and I hope your message is heard by everyone who thinks that making Hawaii more commercial is a good idea. It would, in fact, ruin paradise.

I am a disc jockey (KWXX-FM) and music columnist (Hawai`i Island Journal) on the Big Island. Although I was not a close personal friend of Iz’s, our paths did cross rather often. After the first time we met, he considered me and treated me as a friend. He had amazing people skills, better than any politician’s, because you knew his motives were more honorable. He would remember you by name and your family afterwards. He was truly amazing in the way he could talk to you for five minutes, but make you feel like you’ve known him forever.

Approximately a week before he passed away, he called me on the air from his hospital room, quipping that he was “Live from the Presidential Suite at the Queen Emma Hilton.” He had been ill for quite some time and there had been many false alarms, but this time, he knew he was dying. I know this because he requested that I play “In this Life,” which is a swan song, for all his friends and fans on the Hilo side. It was his way of preparing us for the loss of this truly remarkable individual.

But you know, we haven’t lost him at all. Nearly three years after his death, his music is just as powerful and more popular than ever. Both the Mountain Apple Company and Marlene have worked tirelessly to preserve his music and his memory. His legacy of love will be with us forever.

Aloha a hui hou, John Burnett

I remember meeting Iz at HOIKE because I worked the side enterance door back stage. In fact, the only person that went in and out of that door was Iz. My ‘ohana and I are living in Texas for awhile. I happen to have all Iz’s albums. Listening to his music makes us strong and is such a comfort, it takes us home. We always make sure that people here on this continent knows that the man singing at the end of “Meet Joe Black” is a Hawaiian and his name is Bruddah Iz; we also make sure that everybody here knows that’s Bruddah Iz singing on the “e-toys” commercial. We miss his presence here on earth, but he lives on fo’ eva through his music!

I visited the islands for my first time just last year (November 1999) and wanted a momento of my trip and the evocative Hawaiian culture.

I randomly chose two of IZ’s albums: “IZ in concert – The man and his music” and “N DIS LIFE”. I started listening to these albums on and off again, then more and more. Often, I find myself singing and dancing to his heart warming tunes.

Today, his music is inspirational and celebratory of such a remarkable message of what it is to be Hawaiian. I’m just a Colorado mountain-boy myself, but I understand and recognize that Love is universal. It’s what binds us together. And as for me, IZ has helped to make this world a little smaller, a little kinder…just like Hawaii.

I think IZ said it best: “Hawaiian is to me, a feeling of getting somewhere without stepping on anybody’s toes, without causing friction with anybody…”

Thank you for your music and your Love!

I first heard IZ on National Public Radio as part of a piece about scouting for music. He sang “Over the Rainbow.” It was the most beautiful thing I’d heard. I couldn’t remember his last name, but remembered “Israel.” I wanted a CD but didn’t know how to find one. Then late in ’99 I heard IZ on the the “Toys ‘R Us” commercial and “Meet Joe Black”. I got his name off the credits. Imagine my sadness when I found that this talented man had died. At least I know who he was and how to get his beautiful music. -Ed Mauget, Durham, NC

I came to Hawaii for the first time last year. I am a music fan but had never heard of IZ. I came upon a kiosk where they sold tapes. I zeroed in on one of IZ’s albums immediately. Maybe it was his picture that caught my attention, I don’t know. But as soon as I started listening to the music I immediately knew what most Hawaiins already knew.

IZ is unknown in Chicago. I don’t know about the rest of the mainland. But maybe that’s a good thing. He is of Hawaii and for Hawaii. A Hawaiin treasure.

I fell in love with the island of Kauai a few years back,as my wife and I were preparing to leave we searched for a recording which would feature something about Kauai. Our good fortune was to find E Ale E by Israel, what a wonderful voice and haunting melodies. My wife and I are totally hooked, not just by the music but the gentleness of the man;for us he personifies the Hawaiian people who always seem to exhibit that same gentle spirit.I regret his passing but I am sure that his music will live on amongst all of us who have come to love the islands and their people.

I am so touched by this Man’s Music. I put on one of my IZ CD’s sit back in my easy chair, and listen. He has made me smile, tap my feet, weep, and feel as if he is singing to me. God bless this man, his music, and his very angelic voice. I know that he is in heaven with the rest of the angels. I hope to hear him again in the next place.

With much Love, John ALOHA Bruddah IZ

I made my first trip to Hawaii this year with my beautiful wife of 30 years. My wife loves music & I knew I would have to bring home a Hawaiian CD. The problem is that I don’t really care for Hawaiian music. Realizeing that my wife would have a CD anyway I decided to try & find a CD that I could tolerate. While browsing thru the shops I would begin to sample the different Hawaiian CD selections but could never find one I could be happy with. While in Hilo Hatties I saw IZ’s CD “In Concert” & sampled some of the music. As I listened I thought, maybe I could live with this. The day we were leaving while in the airport my wife said she hadn’t bought a CD & couldn’t leave without one. In the store was the IZ CD so I told her if she must get Hawaiian music try this fellow. His music is the only music I can stand. As my wife began to play IZ’s music at home I found myself listening to his music & begining to appreciate it’s simplistic beauty. His smooth soothing voice & harmonies that are like manna from heaven. IZ’s music is now our favorite music & we play it at least once or twice a week. It’s sad that he left us so soon. But I believe he is enjoying himself in heaven. And God now is enjoying IZ’s beautiful music. May God bless his wife

To the memory of Braddah Iz I have been away from Hawaii for almost 20years. I have kept up with local entertainers, but none has touched my heart the way that Isreal did. His music had a way of reaching deep into your soul and bringing out the true essence of being a proud Hawaiian. His passing is a profound loss for the Hawaiian people. I know that he sits in heaven playing beautiful music for the almighty Aloha nui loa Wendy

It was a real shock when my friend from Montréal told me of this bad news. The weird thing was we were watching TV a week ago when we heard some music and voice on a car commercial … and it was IZ (from his CD — “Facing Future”) which my friend bought on our Hawaiian Holiday in Feb. 1994.

We play it often especially on these very cold winter days … like today.

In closing, I wish to send out my sincere condolescences to his family and friends.

Aloha,

Argent « KALA » Lee

I am from the Kamehameha Schools, and we had to pick an artist of any kind. I choose to pike IZ because he means the most to me. I was there when they skattered his ashes. I was heart breaking. When I hear the E Toys commercial, I have to stop everything that I’am doing and just listen to his voice.I am 13 years of age, and I love Bradda Israel Kamakawiwo’ole very much. His memory will live on forever. He is such a hero to all of us and I know that we all will love him no matter what!

I had just recently on a last vist to my brother in the Islands been really introduced to Israel’s music. I was so moved by the beauty of his voice and clear understanding of his wish for all to remain true to the Hawaiin Spirit. I wish that he was still with us to share his special message with all of us, only God knows why people with such a wonderful gift should be snatched from us. I hope he remains in all of our hearts and minds forever and that the young Hawaiins learn his wish.

Sincerely, Angela Fonda of San Francisco, Ca.

i just recently learned of iz’s music, from the somewhere over the rainbow/it’s a wonderful world medley at the end of joe black. for very personal reasons, somewhere over the rainbow has special significance for me. i have never heard it sung more movingly, and the intertwining of it’s a wonderful world in a medley is sheer genius. i wanted to find out who sang this remarkable rendition.

i eventually came upon the iz web pages and was shattered to learn he is no longer with us on this earth, and that i will never be able to see him in person. (though he will always be with us, of course, with his music.)

i have several of his cd’s now, and am amazed that such a moving and powerful performer is not more well-known, and that i never heard him sing until i saw the movie meet joe black.

please keep up the good work of the website and keep spreading the story of this amazing being who enriched the existence of all those whose lives he touched, including mine, when i heard him sing somewhere over the rainbow.

sincerely.

tom hummel

Over the Christmas holiday I heard Israel for the first time. His version of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow/Wonderful World” was played on CBC radio, and I can’t get his voice out of my head. I am very saddened to learn of his death, and am definitely going to seek out “Facing Future”. My deepest condolences to his family and friends.

I’ve only just visited Hawaii for my first time (in this body, anyway) and have just know been turned on to Iz. I can tell you that from the very first time I heard his voice I was deeply touched and brought to tears. Many people must have loved him dearly in his life. My children will listen to his voice, and maybe theirs will too, so that his memory will be carried on and on.

I first heard Iz on the radio station KCRW, here in California. I was so moved by his sensitivity I bought the CD “Facing Future” immediately. He has become my favorite recording artist. I want to/have been working on a tribute to his message. Which I believe to be of tremendous importance. Not only for Hawai’i but for our entire Planet. We are dying. We are not looking at the bigger picture. We are losing a battle against “Mother Nature”. We cannot win. When it is finished I will post it on the Web. I only hope it will at least echo what he believed in. As we say, “Zichrono Livracha Isarel Kamakawiwo’ole”. Or – in English – May his memory be a blessing!

Dear Sir, Please accept my belated condolences and pass them on to Israel’s family. I have only recently become familar with his music by way of the “Meet Joe Black” soundtrack. Israel’s rendition of “Over The Rainbow” and “What A Wonderful World” so touched me that I was inspired to learn them myself on the mandolin. Does he play the ukelele on this medley? Also, I would like to know if there is a CD available besides the soundtrack that contains these songs. Sincerely, David Robbins
