I hate that I never heard of Bruddah IZ until this past year. He was a one of a kind musician. The way he could take his uke and transform it into an instrument of such beauty. His vocals for some reason are haunting yet comforting at the same time. This quality is what I find attracts me to his music. The music world as well as the rest of the world has lost a true pioneer and giant of a man.

Like so many others, I discovered the wonderful music of IZ only after he had died.

Oh, how I wish I had heard his music when he was alive. What a dream it would have been to see him live in concert. I feel that much of the world got robed.

I recently made a trip to Maui and discoverd his music playing on the stereo of my car rental. I asked some locals who the heck IZ was, and it was like I had spoken the name of a God. Everything got real quiet and reverent when they told me who this great man was.

The only suvenier I brought home from the Island’s was Iz’s CD. That was enough. All the beauty, happiness and spirituality of the Hawaiian Islands are all contained in his music. I can’t listen without getting tears in my eyes. Iz is truley somewhere over the rainbow, and I like to think he is looking down on us with that beautiful face and singing to us with that amazing husky, yet gentle voice. I just started a weight loss blog and I was looking for the perfect song of inspiration to add..I have a special Angel (Diane) that helped me believe in myself by travling more than 10 hrs round trip to visit me a stranger to her at the time. She & I were speaking of Somwwhere over the Rianbow as we both love rainbows. I looked it up & found this version which I INSTANTLY knew it was PERFECT for ALL I wanted from my blog & journey. I just discovered Iz’s music in the last year during an episode of Cold Cases. I now play it at my office where everyone absolutely loves it. I was extremely sadden to hear he had pasted some years back. He had the voice of an angel- soothing and heartfelt. I was looking thru a friend’s profile on Facebook and came across a video on his funwall. I played it thinking it was a comedy act, or something of that nature, but what I found there was a total shock. I heard the voice of an angel. I had to stop what I was doing and play this over and over. This man was the sound of all things good and joyous. I had never heard of him before today, and had never heard him sing either, but I instantly fell in love with him, and was greatly saddened to find that he had passed on. My condolances to the family, it must have been wonderful knowing him, and I hope his voice travels on forever and ever, and brings the peace to others that it brought to me.

Our dear brother Iz has left all of humanity with an understanding of the true nature of man when man is right with the Lord. His voice is a testament to this, no matter his health problems that so quickly removed his wonderful voice from our midst. The lyrics in all of his songs and his voice suggest to me that this was a man that was at peace with who he was and with all things around him. A very late comer to iz’s music. Absolutely inspiring. Every 10 years or so JAH sends a messenger with an angelic voice that pleases those in heaven and us on earth. I borrowed a friends iPod recently(2007) and happened across several of Bruddah’s songs. I had never heard of him or his music. I couldn’t stop listening, trying to sing along, and often coming near tears at the passion in the music.

Tonight I decided to search the internet to learn more about him and his music, expecting to learn something about what he might be recording now….In just these last moments I have learned that Bruddah is gone.

Over The Rainbow has always been a favorite of mine, but never more so than the first time I heard it sung by Israel. I had never heard it sung more beautifully by anyone. It saddens me to know that it has taken me 10 years to find his voice, but glad at the same time because he is now singing with the birds and the angels, in the blue skies, above the rainbows. He passed 6 days after we lost our mother, here in Florida. I know she would have loved his music, his songs and his soothing voice. I’d like to think he’s still singing and she’s enjoying it, as much as all of us have.

Thank You IZ Yesterday I heard IZ for the first time almost by accident He was singing Over The Rainbow as a background track on a Youtube video that a friend sent me for the visual content. I was immediately overwhelmed by The Quality of IZ’s voice and instantly made it a lifetime favourite. I was so intruged I started to investigate who it was singing and I was lucky thanks to a previous post by a fan. Later in the day as I continued to Google IZ I was deeply sadened to learn of his death, and then very happy that he was now with his beloved brother. IZ had the voice of an Angel and its very seldom I shed tears for someone I have know so very briefly.

I am certain IZ is very much missed especially by those who were privelidged to know him.

I’d just like to say Thank You IZ for sharing your wonderfull gift, my life is enriched, when my time comes I am looking forward to saying Aloha.

I never knew who sung the Over the Rainbow song until I stumbled upon his video on YouTube. I sobbed through it each time I listened to it. Reason is because it touches me personally as my brother, who died June 29, 1997, was very obese and died suddenly at 32. I miss him terribly. I like Hawaiian music, I play violin, viola and piano. you know?, I have a ukulele but I will learn it at the beginning of November. I’m 12 but I will turn 13 on August 25. I used to play the clarinet but I quit because of the money because I asked for too many instruments. I asked for violin, piano, mandolin, clarinet, cello and ukulele.

I only play violin, viola and piano.

If I wanted to play anything else, it would be either a cello, oboe, bassoon, flute, harpsichord, trumpet, trombone or maybe drums.

His music is still touching lives. My cousin Brittany Gainous recently passed away at the age of 10 after a 2 year battle with brain cancer and this song touched my heart as I thought of her Somewhere Over the Rainbow. May they both rest in peace and knowing Brittany she is sitting next to him singing right along.

I will be done in December of ’07. Wow! The first time I heard Iz’s Over the Rainbow was at a luau last year in Maui (2006). I fell so much in love with it. I came back to Hawaii for a family reunion this summer of 2007. I just found out today that this great musician had already passed away. I bought Facing the Future today, and immediately played Over the Rainbow in the car. I was happy to hear this beautiful song again, but sad in my heart to know that Iz had passed on. It was a bittersweet moment. My husband mentioned that it is play often at funerals. My thoughts switched immediately over to my eldest brother, Edwin, who has terminal cancer. We are here because he wanted to visit Hawaii again with our families. In some ways I notice similarities between my brother and Iz, both very gentle, kind, and thoughtful. Thank God for you Iz for your sweet and gentle ways.

I Jane, was searching for Hawaiian Music for my daughter’s Luau Wedding soon to be and had just received a newletter from somewhere in Hawaii, I was thrilled because it told about the music of Israel who I’d never heard before.I went directly to the site that sold his music and placed a order but it didn’t go through. I immediately called the phone number and was told they weren’t open on weekends. I somehow lost the site and the number. I was devastated and have not been able to find it again. I however found his music elsewhere and placed another order. He was born the year I graduated from High School and at that time Don Ho was the rage. My wife and I discovered Brother IZ through a very close friend of my Kalani Kruse. On our travels to Kailua Kona, Hawaii where my parents have lived since 1980, we always played his music traveling the island. I first heard Iz sing at the end of ER when (can’t remember the Dr.s name)…was dying of brain cancer and he was laying in bed on a tropical island. Loved the song, and for years didn’t know who did it. Searched the Internet and found Iz…very happy to find it You Tube!

Hello, I had never heard of Israel Kamakawiwo Ole’ before a few days ago. My nephew’s wife is wanting the song Somewhere over the rainbow played at her wedding as she walks down the aisle. I wanted to hear the song, so I checked it out. I have to say that the song and the music, but mainly, the voice and the man, moved me to tears. He was an absolutely beautiful man with a voice to match. I wish so much that he had not died at such a young age. I’m sure he was a truly wonderful person, as he seems to have touched so many people from what I’ve now read and heard. My condolences go to his wife and daughter and family. Please know that even across all these miles, that he touched a heart in Knoxville, TN. Truly, I’ve never heard a more beautiful version of Somewhere over the rainbow. He was a very talented man with a gift from God. I know he is missed, but I am sure he’s in Heaven singing to the Angels and making them smile. I am from Missouri and married a Samoan gentleman in 1998. We lived in Hawaii the 1st year. I have to admit that even tho the cost of living is outrageous there, I have never been happier. I love the people, the food and the music. Everytime the radio was on,I heard Bruddah IZ. It was great. Then when we came back to Missouri, we couldn’t find the music anywhere. My husband’s family sent us a CD every so often but we didn’t get to keep them very long because somebody was always borrowing them and never returning and we never kept them very long. I was looking up Hawaiian music for Don Ho, and came across IZ. Now I am starting our collection again, one at a time. I called everybody I could think of and played some of the music for them. I also sent them the sites so they can buy their own CD’s. Maybe I should wait until they get their music and borrow it from them. LOL.

I always wondered who sang that song Somewhere Over The Rainbow, on the commercials on TV. My wife and my family and I went to Hawaii about two years ago to visit my moms life long friend on Molokai. We were in the coffee plant trying their mocca mama’s and I saw Israels Facing The Future CD, not knowing who it was. I push the button that had his name on it and there was the song. I immediatly showed my wife and bought it. After we got back to Colorado I started to look up about his life and what kind of person he was. I fell in love with his voice and his being. He was so full of what the world needs today, LOVE. I listen to his music daily and it puts me at peace with what ever is bothering me. There is so much I could say about him but ill just say this for now. Even though I never knew him, I feel I know him plenty through his music. He was just a big teddy bear looks like to me and we miss him so much for what he brought to the hearts of simple people. The Hawaiian culture is awsome so full of love and peace.

Hi. I’m from Denmark. I play Rock’n’Roll guitar, but I’ve allways respected any other type of music. The first I’d heard from Iz, was in the tv-serie ER, in the episode where, one of the doctors (Mark Greene), just past away, and they were playin’ Over The Rainbow. I discovered Iz through my mother who had heard Over the Rainbow on the TV show Cold Case.A query was answered in the local newspaper, stating who the singer was and the sad fact that he had passed in 1997. My mother’s day gift to my mother that year (2005) was every Iz CD I could find.Once I played Facing Future,I also bought every CD I could find. Sometimes he makes me smile, and sometimes brings me to tears.I use the music to decompress (I live and drive to work in the Washington, DC suburbs) and I use the music to obtain peace.Work has been particularly stressful in the past few weeks.Iz has been my best friend.He joins me on the morning commute and then again in the evening.He brings me great peace. I had not heard of him until I met Joan. She was a nice lady – mom of a friend- I took care of for a while. She was dying from cancer and I had the privilege of caring for her until she passed away. I was at a ime in my life where I needed change. the choices I’d made up to this point were leading me to a short lived life and I remember Braddah Iz talking on numerous occasions of how he used to live an hw he made the changes to insure a pono exsistance.

When he died, I used it as an excuse to do what I do best and thus began the beginning of the end, the beginning of my last use of drugs and alcohol to explain away life, and the beginning of a new path of life where choces counted and meant something. this meant the end to the old Kawika who blammed everything on everyone else taking little account or blam for my own life’s path.

I think of Braddah Iz on many occasions and thank my Akua for placing him in my life that I should change.

I discovered IZ from the movie, 50 First Dates. At the end of the movie came this wonderful voice. I had to find out who it was. I first heard of Iz’s song when I was in Japan on the J- wave lunch hour of Hawaiian songs. The song was about Konishiki, Mushashimaru, and Akebono. I fell in love with his music again when hearing a friends CD while in Florida. I am now in Hawaii exeriencing what inspired his great music. How does a 35 year old man, married and a father of two, find himself sitting in front of a computer crying while listening to IZ, this nearly ten years after his passing away?

As so many before me, I recently discovered the music of Israel Kamakawiwo’ole. As I sit and read all I can of this man, I feel a loss that can only be the smallest fraction of what his family, friends and people must have felt and feel today.

I only wish that my message can reach these very people to let them know that IZ has once again touched someone’s life, so many miles away, so many years after his walk on Earth. I want them to smile with the knowledge that this man inspires me to wrap my arms around my family and be ever so grateful of what I have.

Truly he was a gift to all of us and still is today through his beautiful and inspirational voice.

May God watch over his family, friends and people who he obviously loved so much.

Very sad to lose someone as dedicated as him. I am not hawaiian but very fascinated with the hawaiian culture and the song hawaii 78 really got to me. It is sad to see someplace so beautiful be used for tourism purposes when some places should be left alone. I have never visited Hawaii and hope to someday.

My daughter’s baby boy Finlay was stillborn on 27th October last. Somewhere over the rainbow was played at the funeral and I can’t hear it without crying. Such a beatiful song with such meaning for me and my family.
