I’ve had the opportunity to follow Iz’s music career for many years. From the days at the ranch house to the leeward side of the island. It brought a smile to my face one day on the mainland while driving I-5 N to Seattle a couple years ago listening to NPR morning show end a segment with a music bumper by IZ. Also, back in Hawaii driving to town from the country on the day of IZ”s funeral. Just about Waikele I pulled over as did others, to the shoulder of the H1 freeway. All you could see coming towards us on the Honolulu side of H1 heading to Makaha were 18 wheeler after 18 wheeler trucks.Almost all the trucks had Hawaiian flags flying in the wind.I sat there in my car on the side of H1 freeway that day with a smile on my face.

I was fortunate to have attended a performance by the Makaha Sons with Iz and Skippy. It wasn’t a big room, there was a comfortable, intimate feel to it. And between songs the guys would “talk story” with the audience. I’ll never forget that wonderful memory. Now living on the mainland for many years, we have raised our kids “hawaiian style”, and thru them the aloha spirit lives on, including the love for Iz’s music. A beautiful voice, a truly beautiful man. God’s blessings to his family. me ke aloha pumehana

My husband and I spent our honeymoon in Hawaii and that’s when we discovered IZ’s beautiful music. Anytime we hear it, it will always bring us back to that special time. I can only describe his music with one word – “Peaceful”. It’s the same feeling we had when we were on our honeymoon and we will never forget it. I’m not sure if anyone that has never been to Hawaii would understand. Thanks IZ for happy memories and you’ll always be in our hearts. Paul and Sandy Cioffi (Honeymoon Maui – Oct. ’97)

I visited Oahu and Hawaii this summer of 2001 and loved every inch of. Spending time with relatives that I never knew existed and enjoying each relaxing swim in the deep ocean. I wanted to get in tuned with my culture and bought Hawaiian music. I listen to it every morning as my mom puts music on while the family gets ready for the day. I bought many cd’s such as the volumes of the Cazimero Brothers and both of IZ’s cd’s. I especially enjoy IZ’s version of “Somewhere over the Rainbow” (my all-time fav) and “O Hawaii.”

Just a little over an hour ago I was listening to our local public radio station, and heard “Over the Rainbow” for the first time. (Not Judy’s!)

I can’t remember the last time a song brought such joy.

I first heard Somewhere Over the Rainbow on a commercial, I cannot remember how long ago, and the beat of it just touched me, and I felt at peace whenever I heard it after. As I watched Finding Forrester, I heard the ever familiar beginning of the song again, and I just feel so good inside. I went right on my computer and downloaded the song, I listen everyday. Israel, you will never be forgotten, nor will your music, and how much it means to all of us.

Some toy company, Toys.com I think, ran a television advertisement with just some of the intro to Iz’s “Rainbow/Wonderful World” medley. Something about it brought tears to my eyes.

Next I heard the whole song at the end of the movie “Meet Joe Black”. I cried again. There was something about that clear sweet voice…

“Finding Forester”… There it was again. I weped. I want home and found it on the internet. I played it over and over.

I don’t understand it. Music has such power to evoke emotions. I know that. But this. It touches me so deeply. It inspires me as well. I may by a ukulele just to try to learn this song… I can’t just listen. I want to be the song. I want to touch others as I have been touched.

It must be love, Iz. In its purest form.

With love,

Rob:-] ——————————————————————————–

I was watching Finding Forrester last night and heard the song Somewhere Over the Rainbow and immediately began singing it all the way to the end. What a great version of this song. I then went down to find his name and cd to purchase which I am going to do right after I finish writing this note. I don’t know anything about you IZ but I soon will and thank you for leaving something for people to enjoy and you will be missed.

I was introduced to his tender spirit in his Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World song at the end of the Finding Forester movie. His hauntingly beautiful voice reached inside my spirit and lit a fire to learn more about him. When the Finding Forester Soundtrack came out, I was interested in one song only. Finally able to learn the name of the artist, I bought his Facing Future album instead of the Finding Forester album. The Songs in that Album opens the listener to IZ’s enormous tenderness, his love of the Islands and its traditions. I never had the desire to listen to Hawaiian music before, but IZ changed that. I will get all of his albums, both solo albums and those with the group.

I was torn when I saw that IZ had transitioned to Spirit in 1997. I have never heard it said more beautifully. As I obtain more of his music, I will open myself to its meanings and its soul settling sounds. I thank the Lord for giving him to us, even for the seemingly short time he did.

Thank You

Although I was in Hawaii on vacation at the time of Iz’s death — and saw and heard many wonderful tributes to the man — I only recently discovered his music. What a talent! And what a shame that the world has lost such a voice. Bruddah Iz will live on in everyone who loves Hawaii as he did; whether it is their home or just a beautiful retreat. Thank you for this website. It’s a nice tribute to a man who gave so much to the Hawaiian people.

Well I’ve signed this before but I just returned to the Big Island from Oahu. While there I’m happy and proud to say that I went to the Iz Fest in the cornfields of Kapolei on Sunday, November 11th. It was just awesome. I really enjoyed the concert. So many wonderful entertainers were there. I stayed till the very end which was well after midnight. Iz’s band were the last performers. I could feel the pressence of Braddah Iz. It was a great and wonderful feeling. Thank you for putting this fest together. I look forward to attending more in the future. Much Love & Aloha, Gail

We first “met” IZ the day after the September 11th attack, when we were visiting Hawaii and a friend recommended his music for healing in Hawaii. I can’t say how much his music (which, of course, includes his spirit), has affected me and my husband. We just returned from a Hawaiian Cruise. On one of our shore excursions, the bus drive was ask “If you were to recommend hawaiian music, what would it be?” He not only told us your name, but played “White Sandy Beach of Hawaii”. When we went to the airport, I bought the CD. I LOVE IT!!!!! Just wanted someone to know, even Oklahomans love the music. Wish we had discovered him long ago.

So, WHAT is with these mean-spirited posts? Is there any way to erase them? I guess they want attention, don’t have good lives themselves. How about this: GROW UP. It hurts me to read them, but I guess Iz would just love ’em anyway. Sheesh!

well, brudah has had a long and glorious life. his music has been an inspiration to all. i own all his cd’s and listen to them constantly. even though he has died, his music lives on. his music is truly a great gift to this world. the way i see it, we have the best of both worlds now. we can still listen to his beautiful sounds, but we have a quiet, safe feeling knowing that Iz’s fat ass and silently burning in hades. thanks again Brudah for hours of enjoyable listening experiences. Hey wait a minute man, Iz never got an ass-whoopin or anything like it! He could hold his own in fighting. You may not be able to tell by his music, but Iz was a bloodthirsty monster who lived for a fight. Once at a bar on the Big Island, I watched as Iz threw back 25 beers in 2 hours, then went on a rampage leaving 4 criticaly wounded, and mauling a horse. Man you dont mess around with the Bruddah??!!!

Bruddah Iz! Man, I have got memories about my Isreal. Ive seen him perform many times, and loved every show. My favorite memory those is when Iz came out on stage, tripped, and the whole stage shook from all his fat. Then he tried to play it off and say it was a new dance move he had been working on. The whole place went nuts, and booed Iz off the stage. Later I say Isreal sobbing behind the stage eating a live goat, and drinking beer. I looked at him and laughing! Then he came to my house and we watched Tv, then my whole family laid a massive ass-whoppin on him, and we kicked him out the door. Isreal was great. Alive with the aloha spirit forever my dawg drudawg IZ man tough guy McPoop

I arrived in Hawaii only a week before Iz passed on,but let me tell you this.Bruddah Iz has shown me why I stayed here after coming for only an eight day vacation.Iz showed me the beauty of this place we call paradise.Through his music I know what it is to be Hawaiian at heart.I don’t take this responsability lightly.Yes I feel being Hawaiian at heart is not just a feeling or a title,it is being responsable to all Hawaiian Islands,it is showing ALOHA to all.It is to show respect to all native Hawaiians. It is to love everthing Hawaiian. It is to help restore all things Hawaiian.Iz I never met you in person this is my loss, but your gain is that I listen to your music everyday of my life.I beleive in you and everything you stand for. Friends on Oahu turned us on to Iz. We bought all his solo CDs. We played him as we drove the Big Island, through the lava fields, through the rain forest, through the mountains and valleys. He is the heart and soul of Hawai’i.

After we return home to Maryland, whenever we play his songs, our hearts and minds will be in Hawaii.

Bruddah Iz was a true Hawaiian. I, as well as many others, loved his beautiful music. I remember meeting him at a Block Party in Honolulu. My roommate went up to him and asked him if he could sign her dollar bill ( we had no paper on hand)and he graciously signed his name on the bill. I just stood there in awe, looking at this beautiful man. He is greatly missed and I am truly thankful that we all got to know him. His music will live on forever…

My wife and I just returned from our first visit to the enchanted land of Hawai’i. During our visit we were introduced to Hawaiian music and were immediately hypnotized by an angelic voice that touched our souls in a way that is hard to describe. We heared that same voice a day later during a canoe trip on the Big Island. Again we were speechless by the beauty, honesty, hope and love in the spiritual voice we were treated to that day. We learned that the gift we were listening to belonged to a man called IZ, and then we were told he was no longer with us, not physically, that is. You see, we immediately bought his CDs and on our return home have been listening to them ever since. I know we will never stop! Although we were deeply saddened for his family especially and for all the world because of his untimely passing, we are forever grateful to this Man (and his family) for leaving us such a legacy. His message will live forever, for his music is timeless and without cultural boundary. Mahalo for giving us the chance on this site to say “Mahalo Israel Kamakawiwo’ole”.

Well, at last. When I first heard the last song in the film Meet Joe Black, I heard the most beatiful voice, touching the innermost part of my soul. I have listened to the track everyday, finding strength on my path which has been paved with losses and pain. Slowly Kamakawiwoole’s voice brought me out of the shade of sorrow into the light of happiness. His voice brought me back on my path of love. Thankyou Hamid

WHAT a singer he was! And what a human being….that Spirit of Aloha came through loud and clear!

I first heard of Iz about a month ago on the internet. Since then, I’ve bought, I think, every one of his CDs. Wish I’d discovered this man’s music years ago.

You know, when you’ve spent most of 56 years involved in the struggle to erase racism, sexism, ageism, and all the other “isms” we use to isolate ourselves from one another and count ourselves “one up” on the person next to us, you get to a point sometimes where you’re just tired. You want to give up the fight. Something is lost, some vital spark has been drained from you, and you just feel tired . . .

That’s where I was this past winter. And then “Hurricane Iz” blew into my life–and that changed everything! Thank you, Bruddah Iz, for being the person you chose to be, full of light and music and love for everyone. Thank you for the privilege of living on the same planet at the same time. I know I will see you in Heaven one day, and there get a chance to thank you in person……just for being……

In the Spirit of Aloha

The Dolphin Lady 🙂

every culture has its musical geniuses, and hawaii is no exception. Isreal understood vocals like few ive heard and could easily have moved into the mainstream. he had the potential to make waves in the rock world. if he had done so i would say he would be the third greatest rock musician ever behind the beatles and elvis. i would have also like to have seen isreal colaborate with Korn or Danzig because i think that wouldve been interesting. ive always thought isreal secretly wanted to play the bagpipes, and yearned to pick up the bass guitar, and i think he should have. oh well, hes still my all time favorite singer. love to all kenneth

Bruddah IZ is with me and has been for much of the month of April here in Wisconsin.

First you should know I was an Islander. For a few short months until I streaked Waikiki buck nakid reciting the 23 psalm telling everyone on the beach that fine memorial day in 1974 to go to hell. After breaking down doors in the Hilton Royal it was the calming words of a Bruddah Hawian police officer that brought me around. I was an aviator for the USCoastGuard, was disliked by fellow coasties, I looked polineasian, had local friends and brought them to Rons at Barbers Point a restricted permission only beach. They viewed Skinny and his family as ripoffs. I knew better. I knew these people and had sprit contact while at Upolo Point on the big island on a weekend overnight to the park there. My spelling is poor you must excuse me.

Here is why I write today.

My Newfoundland Sir Albert HRH at age at 11 years 8 months died when his heart failed Nov 19. We was one happy dog, gave me peace and joy Bruddah Iz music brought me up to and through this sad event. Don’t worry be happy brought me up to and through my belgium shepard punch’s passing. When I saw finding Forseter I just had to find IZ’s Over the rainbow/What a Wonderful World. Sprit contact? I know these things to be true. I hope my informing you of them don’t cause you pain. Just joy of knowing.

I share my grief work song of SirAlberts passing.

Oh My So Sad It’s got me feeling oh so bad Oh My So Sad SirAlbert won’t be coming home.

Alone I wait A loyal friend has crossed through the gate. SirAlbert knows sit stay stand and wait; Yes here I am his sole to take. I’ve left him with the spirits so great.

Oh My So Sad It’s got me feeling oh so bad Oh My So Sad SirAlbert won’t be coming home.

The time will come for waiting hoping lovings sake. I’ve taken him the lord would say; Until your time you’ll have to wait.

Oh My So Sad It’s got me feeling oh so bad Oh My So Sad SirAlbert won’t be coming home.

The hazing I endured as an Islander was a privledge. I always said I was not polineasian when asked. I am just a Texas Scottsman with a pure loving heart. I work for the USPS as an electronics technician today

Buddah IZ is and I thank him very much. This you should know.

I always thought that I would not be interested in visiting Hawaii because of all the “tourist” junk, but through IZ I have seen a glimpse of the true Hawaiian spirit and I know that there must be a lot of it there still. I am ashamed of all the damage our country has done to Hawaii (mostly for the sake of money) and I admire IZ for standing up for his people and promoting peace at the same time. He had a message of love, shining through even his silliest songs. The real kind of love, that connects all of us. I visit this site pretty often, and am amazed at how many people continue to be touched by IZ and his music. I see the same thing when I talk to people about him- there are a lot of us who have been deeply moved by something about him that goes beyond his music. Maybe we are just so happy to hear about somebody so REAL. Whatever it is, I miss him like he was my own brudduh. Thanks for keeping up this site. “Hawaiian at Heart” in Oregon

On our first trip to Hawaii this year, I heard Iz’s “Living in a Sovereign Land” while driving around the “Big” Island in our rental car. When we returned home, I checked out the internet for his music. After listening to “Facing Future”, I can’t wait to get more of his music. It touches my soul and calms my spirit. I listen to the music in the morning, and all day I find myself humming the melodies. Learning more about Iz through web sights like this, I miss a man I never got to meet.

I as many others had discovered his sound that was hidden from middle class america within the soundtracks of a movie which would inspire many. But as I read from another fan…his testimony will lay with in film backgrounds, but his memory not…it will always be with us as a human kind. I am a 52 year old 60’s son…. left over from war and hate and I now see at my age the bitterness of the world on each side. I as many my age wish that we were closer in nature to each other as true fathers, sons, brothers, and daughters… All my best to this mans relatives whom have lost a son…

Hello, I hope I have the right artist, but if you could I have a song stuck in my head, and it was on the Meet Joe Black Movie and EBay commercials I would really like to know the song so I can find the CD. Thank You so Much.

Aloha, It was my dream to one day be able to play music with bruddah IZ at the shell one day. He has inspired me to keep jammin, keep fighting for our people.

He was the only person who could bring everyone together with his message of love and unity. He could have brought all the different sovereignty groups together to create one force!

Aloha Kanaka, YOU DA MAN!

As a member of the Honolulu Symphony from 1985-88, I had the opportunity to perform with numerous island artists: Karen Keawehawai’i, Don Ho, Danny Kalekeini, Brothers Cazimero, Keola Beamer, Palani Vaughan, the Pahinui brothers, the Makaha Sons of Ni’ihau and many others.

When we performed with the Makaha Sons, I remember thinking that here was this HUGE mauna kanaka with the voice of an angel! I was just a kid then and did not truly realize what I was in the midst of.

Now, I am hearing the ‘Over the Rainbow/Wonderful World’ medley *everywhere*…on movie soundtracks like Joe Black and Finding Forrester, and on commercials each morning.

Suffice it to say that I was deeply disappointed that such a voice was taken from us so early. It happens more often than not, going back as far as Mozart and Schubert.

I am sure we will still be enjoying his music 200 years from now too.

Earlier I posted a note about my daughter’s colorguard team competing using Over the Rainbow/Wonderful World as their performance music. They performed the show at the Winterguard International Championships. The number of people who asked who the artist was after the show was unbelievable. I gave them this website for reference. Performing to a packed house at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee made the whole team feel like a conduit to pass along Israel’s music. We all felt honored.

Somewhere over the Rainbow……..

Bruddah IZ……..

Oh! What a wonderful world!!!

It only takes one man to change the world, and if they don’t have to be alive to do it, WHY DON’T YOU???

IZ, The love you left, is the love I’ll share, And with my eyes closed, I’ll share it everywhere, A love like yours was not meant for me, So in time HE took you away from me, But left your songs for me to hear, And pray that we’ll be together year after year. Rest with God till we see each other for the 1st time!

Every once in a while I would hear a song on some movie or tv show, just a man singing, with an ukelele. Something about the humming and strumming moved me. And then one time I heard it continue into “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” I had never really liked that song, until I heard this man sing it. And you know how it is, you hear some song, and they never say who it is, so I kind of gave up on learning who it was. To make a long story short, I finally found out about IZ and then learned it was him. I’m a fan now. His music is straight-up. I am tired of over-produced voices and electronic/digital manipulation. I like hearing the human voice coming straight from the human heart. That was IZ. Count me a fan.

I graduated in 1994 and went to Waimanalo with my cousin to stay with the Auntie. I went to a Luau for a baby who just turned 1. It was huge and had been the first “real” one I had ever experienced. I am a native american from the mainland with Hawaiian cousins. It reminded me of back home. There was a big band set up and when I look back and try to remember all I can remember is his voice…..and his silhouette sitting on a chair. I remember thinking he is so big, but his voice is so beautiful. Eversince that year my family and I have tried to save, and scrape to plan for Hawaii. We have made it almost every year since then, but have skipped a few hear and there. I believe in my heart that we truly are Hawaiians at heart. Our culture lines up with Hawaiin culture so much… it amazes us. Not just our culture but the spirit. Gifts of the spirit. And we feel it. When were in Hawaii we are not tourists…were Hawaiians. All the locals think were Rich hawaiians from the mainland!LOL We have since been spending our time on the Big Island…..the first time we went to the big island, the landlord who rented out his vacation rental on Kealakekua Bay had IZ playing in the house when we arrived. We immediatley fell in love….because our times got mixed up we would be jammin it at 5am almost every morning watching the spinner dolphins come in the bay. We all ended up going and buying the CD’s and listen to them everday we were there. Playing his music when were are home makes us long for Hawaii. It is almost fighting time when someone plays it and we are really feening for the islands. Because it brings back everything that we love so much. THE HAWAIIAN SPIRIT. If there was one thing that I could say I took from his music…it would be that beautiful Hawaiian spirit. Even above that I had something in common with IZ….I believe in God and his son Jesus Christ. Iz is not dead. For the first time he is ALIVE! Alive in Christ. Much love sent your way to the family……especially the honeygirl! So dont forget you gotta hand full of Nativz on the mainland still bumpin’ the Hawaiian Superman!

I listened for the first time your voice at the end of “Finding Forrester” film on December and I was really struck from it eventhough I didn’t know either what I was hearing, both you and your life. Yesterday night I run into an article published on an italian music magazine telling about you and your experience and from that I read I felt immediately true what you said about angels and their coming, it’s clear listening to your music. I’m thankful to God for your being, I think you had a mission among us, here on hearth, but I’m just afraid that people in my country probably will never discover your grace. Thanks again, Max

In Memory of IZRAEL KAMAKAWIWO’OLE: While returning to my homeland (the Hawaiian Islands) with my new husband in April of 2001, we listened “The Great IZ” and a strong feeling of “Welcome Home” came to both of us. We’ve always listen & enjoy Hawaiian Music, even though we live in the High Sierra’s Mountains of Northern California, the music to be heard from our home has always included one of our favorite artist Izrael Kamakawiwo’ole… We thank the Many Gods of this Earth for blessing us with IZ and his music that will always be remembered forever. This music has refreshed me. I heard it on the finding forrester soundtrack at the movies. I’ve spent alot of time on internet trying to find it as I didn’t get Iz’s name in the movie theatre. It’s been well worth persevering. I feel sad to learn he’s gone but what a gift he left here by his singing

Thanks

Thank you for maintaining this form of communication. I first heard Iz’ voice along with about 100 other people in the movie theater. About 50 of us stayed behind to catch the name of the angel singing then some proceeded across the street ( mean feat in winter in Minnesota) to buy the sound track and begin our adoration. Since i am a bit illerate as far as the internet goes it took me a long time to find out that Iz is no longer performing on this planet. But that does not stop my admiration nor the inspiration i recieve from his work. I am a portrait painter and his voice helps my work not only in the actual task of painting the picture but also as music when i’m working with clients. Could you help me contact the family who i would like to offer a portrait as my appreciation for the inspiration.

Israel brought to the world many gifts. One gift was his gift of music. I am sad to say that I have only known him through his music, however, his music was so spiritual and touching for me, I feel as though I knew the man as well as the music. For those of you whom had the opportunity to get to know Bruddah Iz, you are all very blessed. For those of you whom have not had such a chance (myself included) Bruddah Iz lives on through his music, and in the hearts of every soul he has touched (he touched my soul deeper than any other musician). We miss you, Iz, but regardless, we love you.

It is always sad to discover an artist only to find that he or she has left this earth in the not so distant past. Yet, I guess that is what makes these individuals special. Each day their music spans further across the world, reaching the heart of others. The passion and love that Israel put forth into his music still can be felt today. My story begins as I heard the faint voice of Israel singing “somewhere over the rainbow”. As a child, this song was the first ever to evoke emotion from within my heart. The impact it left followed me to this day in age, where I often do wonder if there are hidden secrets and sanction ‘over the rainbow’. Life has chosen to toss in a few twists, which make the urge to see beyond my troubles even more great. I began to question who the singer was. As the song progressed my fingers danced across my keyboard while I excitedly searched the Internet. The individual playing the song only could provide one name to the song – Israel. His soft melody sang in my ear as I clicked the search button on the search engine. I waited excitedly, for I had just discovered an artist and genre of music I adored… My eyes skimmed the results: “In Loving Memory” Israel Kamakawiwo`ole. I did not know this man. His music was so very new to me, yet my heart weakened. How could..? Why..? I did not know what to say. Israel’s song struck its mid point while I sat back in my chair and read his bio. His life was so new, his voice so strong, and his heart so big. Each day we are baffled by the death of our love ones. The Lord’s timing seems so sudden and quick as he calls for the ones we love…. The end of the song drew nearer and I began to ponder. Israel Kamakawiwo`ole’s life was rich. With his heritage, friends, and most definitely family, Israel had a wonderful life. The predicaments he lived with were small in comparison to the grand scale of his achievements…. The song drew to an end and I sat in silence. I gazed into a smiling picture of Israel and casual reached over to the stereo. My finger glided across the face and once more, played Israel Kamakawiwo`ole’s life as I listened with the greatest compassion for such a marvelous and talented human being named Israel Kamakawiwo`ole. Thank you Israel.

Sincerely, Samuel Hiser

I discovered this superb musician and human being purely by accident on my last vacation to the Big Island. I was looking for some hawaiian music to take home and bought the cassette in an ABC store, hoping it would be interesting. I find now that I listen to it repeatedly and always enjoy every second. I was so disappointed to find that Iz had passed as I wanted to tell him how much his music meant to me.

The minute I first heard his voice I was transfixed- his voice was the BEST I had ever heard. The BEST. And besides the voice, I think he had a gift or a power that helps me know what is really important in life. When I found out that he had passed away – I cried like he was my own brother. This is very strange, from a fairly level-headed mother of four who lives on the mainland and who has never even visited Hawaii. Tears still come to my eyes when I listen to his music, even though I know he said not to cry. I will plant a tree for him here in Oregon. Thank you to IZ’s family and all who have helped continue sharing his music and his gifts for Hawaiins and for us “Hawaiin’s at heart”. ALOHA!

It’s been 4 years since you have left this place but your music continue to live on in our hearts. I remember so clearly the day of your passing as I drove to work and heard of your passing on the radio. I never met you but felt your aloha through your music and words or advice at concerts where you played. I remember the tears I cried thinking what a lost for Hawaii. Through your music you made us Hawaiians proud and has made me more aware of what is important in life. “In Dis Life” and I’ll be there are two of my favorite songs. Words can not fully express how deeply I have enjoyed Israel’s music. I first became aware of him while attending a “Blue Moon” concert. I immediately had to go out and buy his casette. It has been my most listened to casette for the years. I recently purchased a new car without a casette player. It has a CD player instead. I went on the internet to see where I could purchase a CD of Israel’s music. I was shocked and deeply saddened to learn of his death. I extend my most heart felt sympathy to the family and I thank God for Israel’s music. Sincerely yours, Rev. Eugene H. Van Zee

I grew up in Hawaii but have been up here in Minnesota for quite some time. On one of our visits back to the Islands, I found IZ. Through him, I rediscovered my love for Hawaii. Just an avalanche of memories, sights, sounds, smells. I wish I could have seen him play. His spirit and love for his land come through so strong. My wife is Minnesota born and raised and just loves IZ. And I think she can tell that, when I’m listening to his music, I’m in a different place. He had to be a big man to have such a big heart. Thanks to you, IZ, I know Hawaii is and will always be my home.

I am really sad about IZ`s passaway. I first learned about his music in 1995, when a German radio-DJ played IZ´s music, he brought with him from Hawaii. He said, You can´t buy it You just can listen to it here. As I really loved the music I found a way to get “Facing Future” from Hawaii. That´s when I started getting involved with Hawaiian music, today I am studying Ethnomusicology. In Germany nobody knows IZ so I thought he was even unknown in Hawaii. But after my first US-visit I learned he was a superstar. When I went back to the States recently, I visited a Hulashop in a mall. There I saw a video of IZ and a film about his life and his way too early death. I was very sad because I really appreciate his music. Unfortunately You don´t hear his music here in Germany and You cannot buy it regularely. So I just listen to the stuff I have at home. I hope, You will remember this great artist.

Robert from Germany

We first heard of “Iz” through hearing his wonderful version of ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow’ in the movie “Meet Joe Black” and rushed out to get this CD just because of how much we enjoyed this wonderful piece of music which also combined Louis Armstrong’s ‘What a Wonderful World’. We are very sorry to hear of his demise as seems to be of so many artists that we just happen to discover….We’re sure his legacy will live on and we hope to obtain more of Iz’s music. Thank-you for having this website. and once again we are truly sorry that he had so much trouble with his health and consequently died at such an early age…what an unfortunate loss for everyone….God Bless his family members, friends and all the people of his homeland. Let us not forget Israel Kamakawiwo’ole!

I,like many from the mainland, had never heard of this wonderful man until I heard his music featured in films. It prompted me to do some research and sadly I found out that “Bruddah Iz” had died. I consider myself lucky to have learned about such a remarkable voice and as I have learned, remarkable man. I teach school and every morning before school begins, my kids come into my room because I always play music. I consider it a mission in life to expose kids to a diverse range of good music. Last week I played Iz’s music. These are eighth grade kids who mostly listen to vulgar noise. Even they had to acknowledge that the man was a songbird. Perhaps some of his gentleness will rub off on my kids. We should all feel cheated that such an angel sang for such a short time!

Bruddah IZ is a Legend! His music can never be played out or overly listened to. Everytime I hear his songs I get “chicken skin”, and the words just soothe all my troubles away. Being Hawaiian, Bruddah IZ has brought meaningful recognition to our culture and has made a lasting impression on the rest of the world. I heard his song “somewhere over the rainbow” on a commercial once and I couldnt believe, no actually i could believe it when American culture began to recognize the Hawaiian culture. IZ will always be remembered as a magnificant artist, who touched the hearts of many here in the islands as well as the world!

I never got to hear him live but I met him once, very cool. Obviously Soul comes in all sizes and colors. He had plenty of Soul, and such a sweet iridesence of a voice. As they say in the straight up African American church where I learned to sing, “The boy can sing!” Peace to all my relations…

I’m probobly on the last page and no one will probobly read it but I hope Iz can hear my thoughts. Me and my school just did an ukulele festival in your memory which kind of caused everyone to kinda mellow down and think about you and all of Hawaii. Iz, you were the greatest. Please Watch over me and help me to grow strong, just like you.

(3-11-01) I had never heard of Israel Kamakawiwo’ole until yesterday while at Borders Books in Pleasant Hill, CA. I was listening to the Facing Future CD and I was so moved at the first song: Hawai’i ’78 Introduction that tears came into my eyes and I was embarrassed that someone would see me crying in the store, but I didn’t really mind. I could sense that this big man had so much love in his heart and he expressed that thru his beautiful voice. Now, I believe that his music was meant to find me and I am so thankful that it did, because it only strengthens my love for humanity and life itself. Bless You Braddah Iz

Every time I listen to the voice of “Bruddah IZ”, I feel blessed to have his words and his music echo in my mind. Though we all feel the pain of loss, some more than others, we must be happy for our Bruddah, for he is in a far better place now. He may be gone, but I believe that one day, we all will be together in some other place. And we will all sing with our Bruddah, no worries brah. Until that day, I, all of us can keep Israel in our hearts. The music he gave the world is a reminder of how great a man he truly was. Mahalo, Bruddah Iz. We see you soon.

Aloha, Jon

Saw the Brudda for the last time when he came to the 4 Queens in Las Vegas in 95?. He was such an impressive spirit and his playing was so memorable. My wife and I met in Hawaii in 1984 and fell in love to the songs of the Makaha Sons and of course we went to all their concerts and saw them at all the ho’olaulea’s and KCCN concerts = IZ was always there with his ukulele almost completely covered by his hands = he will be with us forever. We can only look forward to hearing him play up there — cause I am sure he is doing just that right now. Our last trip to Hawaii was in June of 1997. He passed the day we departed and somehow we felt partly responsible for leaving the land that we and he loved so much…. Tom Bracken Now living in State College, PA 814-278-2021

I have enjoyed this artist’s music as well as I have enjoyed Neil Diamond, Frank Sinatra, Merle Haggard, and Garth Brooks. I only wish his health had allowed him to entertain as many years as they have. He has blessed my Arkansas heart. “In Dis Life” I wept the first three times I heard it. This song will probably be played at my next wedding (whenever that is). I am so proud that AOL featured him on their welcome page so I could “find” him. Aloha..

Israel Kamakawiwo’le… Sunday mornings in my house have always consisted of eggs, rice, bacon, kimchee, poi, pancakes and music. Maybe sometimes it was just rice and eggs, but their was always music and family. Since I was little it has been like Gabby and Hui Ohana, Melvine, Three Scoops, Sunday Manoa, Makaha Sons, Hapa, Ledwaard, Sonny, Alfred, The Kahumoku Bros, Rev. Kamakahi, The Beamer Bros., Kuo and Iz. There are many more to mention but thats not important. I would always want Iz and Gabby. After kou-kou, I would get my guitar and try to be “…my cousin Mel Amina…”. Smiles every time I tell you!!! Thanks and Aloha to all the Kamakawiwo’ole ohana. P.S. I don’t have much money, and sometimes I cannot have da poi or da bacon or da kimchee or da pancakes or da eggs or even da rice, but I always have da Iz and am all the more richer for it.

Senior citizens from Colorado, my wife and I were blessed – truly blessed – to have seen and heard Bro’ Iz and the Niihau Sons of Makaha many times during our stay in Hawaii some 10 years ago. His voice, his music, his deep love of his islands came to personify Hawaii for these 70-year- olds, and even now, years after his untimely passing, when we think of those wonderful islands, we think of this gentle, talented, gracious, gifted son of Niihau. Iz lives, and we are all the better for his wonderful gifts. Thank you, dear brother.

I have never heard of IZ until one day I saw him on the front page of American Online. It sadly spoke of his death, and what a legend he had become. After seeing this I immediately went and got some of his songs to listen to. I must say that I really admire IZ, and his music really hit me deep down in the soul. I know he is in Heaven, and I wish his family the best of luck for the future. I just know that IZ lived a wonderful life, because he got to share the music he loved with the world. Though he did not live long, he achieved his goal and reached many peoples’ heart. He will live on in all of us.

Commercials are the bane of our lives. But from time to time they amuze or touch us, and we remember them. A few bars of music affected so many of us, and we went looking for the man who sang them — only to find out that he died before we knew he was alive. That’s a shame.

But that etoys commercial acquainted us with the wonderful world of Iz, and while there’ll be no new music (another pity), we will have what he crammed into his short years.

Thanks, Iz. I’m sorry I didn’t have the chance to thank you while you were here. Rest in peace in the beautiful water of your beautiful world. I didn’t know you, but I won’t forget you.

Best of luck and best of good wishes for his family.

Aloha, brudda.

Dear Family, I just heard the version of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World”. My sister said she heard it in a movie and downloaded it. I have to tell you that when I began to listen to the voice i said to her “he’s native, i can tell”. Until last night i have never heard of him before to be honest. Now that i have heard of him and all the beautiful music he sang I am now a full fan. I am sorry about his death and offer my condolnenses to the entire family. I, being an Ojibwe Native know what it is like to have a big family aslo. MAY THE CREATOR WATCH OVER AND PROTECT THE ENTIRE FAMILY.

Coming up on four years, and I still remember where I was when I heard the news…Just waking up and hearing the news on the radio from Erika Engle and another great man, the late Cliff Richards. I saw Iz live at our company’s Christmas party in 1994. He was a regular bruddah, but when he sang, man you sat there in awe..the voice of an angel out of such a big guy!..Enjoy his music, everybody! We’ll have it FOREVER! … much aloha..

I opened up AOL one day, and I see this large man with long hair in front of me, with the caption underneath it, saying “Who IZ this man?” Curious, I click on his image. I read a few lines, about how he wrote the song for Etoy’s “Firefly” Commercial. I decided to check it out. I open up Napster, and Copy-Paste his name to the Artist blank because I never thought I’d be able to spell his full name. I begin to download the song, and being the impatient person I am….was…I select Play Now. That was a few days ago. Since then, that song, “Over the Rainbow” has been played more times than is decent to say. I have fallen in love with his music, and to find out that he died not too long ago, I am filled with saddness. I feel like I just met a great friend, and a few days later, they die. Wonderful artist, and from reading his biographies….a Wonderful Man. ~Justin

I recently viewed “Finding Forester” at a theatre in Kailua Kona. In the last two minutes of the movie I heard IZ and just got chicken skin. I didn’t know his music was in the movie! People who were leaving the theatre sat down just to listen to IZ and wait to see his credits. When the credits rolled by…applause broke out and you could hear people say, “Yeah, IZ!”. It made me reflect on how lucky I felt to have gotten the chance to hear IZ live in concert at the Kona Surf a few years back. He truly is a legend. And sorely missed by all of us.

Bruddah IZ, you’ve shown me what it means to truely feel aloha. Your love for people and music shines bright in your songs, and even now while I’m away on the mainland, I only have to play your music to feel like I’m back home. Some friends up here have heard me play your music and loved it so much they bought some of your cds online. Even now, you’re having a global effect, IZ! I hope that you can see just how many people you’ve touched. Take care up there, I hope I’ll get to see you one day.

Bruddah Iz always has and always will be in the hearts of the members of my ohana. I am listening to one of his songs right now. My mother was a classmate of Koko(Jerome) and Louis Kauakahi. Ahe always knew that they would amount to something great. They used to come to her house when they first started and jammed out for my Kupuna to here and enjoy. I am 16 years old and am 46% Hawaiian and da rest is Hapa. I was born on Oahu and raised on stayed in Waianae until I was 4 mo. then I wen to Kauai where I stayed until I was 15. I miss Hawaii so much (Especially the aloha spirir, the people, da grinds, and the waves). The girl can leave da island but the island no can leave da girl. I shall return one day. Bruddah Iz os an insperation to me.

I feel Isreal was probably the most profound musician of our time, and the most under-appreciated. With his massive girth and fat he was a living sub-woofer. Although he was terrible at instruments, i feel his voice is great and is extremely good looking. He was an embassador for the pine- apple eatin people, and I vividly remember his blubber hulaing around the stage. He was pimp tight, and fat. Very fat.

Although I don’t usually pay much attention to the tidbits that AOL posts on their login, I noticed IZ and listened to some of the audio clips and was drawn to his music. I had to go to three stores, but found the cd I wanted, Facing the Future. In the past three days, I have listened to it continuously and shared it with many others who have also been awed by his music. Even now, people who have never heard his music are discovering how moving it can be.

IZ, many years have passed since we shook hands but I still feel the Aloha, the energy, the love which you preserved in your music, now forever around me. I bought an IZ hat, years ago, which I wear daily, to remind Hawaii, you are still close to my heart. The hat is kind of worn, the color has faded but your spirit will always be close to me. I sometimes get teased about my hat and have been given many new hats to replace the black faded to now, gray but the answer is still the same, I have to keep IZ close to everyone bruddah ever touched with his music. I have to remind everyone, the sacrifices he made for the people, he loved and even though, he is not walking, on this earth, any longer, we will never forget him..Mahalo, we miss you IZ

The moment I first heard IZ’s music I was devoted to finding every note he ever uttered. It took me a while but I believe I have located all of the available recordings and I have only one left to buy, his first. The pleasure I feel in listening to IZ sing is something I am unable to describe in words. I can only say that I hear his music with my soul and it makes me happy.

I share this love of IZ’s music with my brother and sister and the older I get the more I understand the value of the lessons and joy he shared with us.

Thank You IZ.

Love, Delores

My husband and I have always had a special connection with the Hawaiian islands. We got married in Kapalua,Maui 5 years ago and have been back many times since then. Israel’s music truly captures the spirit of “aloha” and of the islands. His music touches that special place that is sacred and serene. His music shall be with us for always.Considering the present turmoil over the homestead lands, his music reminds us of what was so special about the Hawaiin lands was it’s spirit and beauty. The very thing that is being taken away.
Blessings, Kathlee

With the first plunk of the Ukulele on this years e-toys commercial I became obsessed with finding out who posessed this wonderous voice. My son downloaded Somewhere over the rainbow from Napster and bought me Facing Future for Christmas. I played it during Christmas dinner and listen to Iz everyday just for the joy he brings me. I can’t explain it. But I share his music with everyone who enters my home and they love him too and they share it with their loved ones and so he lives……

Just saw Finding Forester and heard Over the Rainbow. At home I searched the new for more information. That is how I became a fan of IZ. I am mezmorized by the CD Facing Future. We started traveling to HI in 1991. I am sorry that I did not know about IZ then.

His voice just takes me back to the islands. Hawai’i 78 is the most haunting song I have ever heard. I sing it all the time. When I hear Over the Rainbow, I get chills. What a great talent. What a shame it ended so soon.

I wanted to let everyone know that when IZ died I cryed for days. When I got married in Sept. of 97 I asked the church to play In dis life as my wedding song. I had so many complements about the uses of that song as my wedding song. When I moved to the mainland (Georgia) in 97 I kept Iz picture in a frame by the front door of my house and when ever I entered it was like I was home in Hawaii. All the Haole visitors I had to my home would ask…. “Who’s that?” and I’d tell them ” Thats Bruddah Iz…Hawaii’s Elvis.” We love you and miss you bruddah!

The world lost a “Shining Light”, when IZ died. How fortunate that he was with us, if only for a short time!! My son bought me one of his CD’s one day, and I was so moved by his voice and his love of life. My first CD was IZ, In Concert. I now own all of his CD’s. I start my morning with one of his CD’s. I want to share with you, that the reason my son bought that first CD for me, my twin brother died suddenly last year of a massive heart attack. He lived in a small town in Montana, and owned a business, after 11 years of cold etc, he and his wife decided to move to his wife’s home in Florida. They sold the house, the business, and they where on their way to Florida! They made it half way to Florida when he died. He wanted more then anything to be on the beach and watch the waves!! Brother IZ, to me embodies that spirit, that my twin had, Aloha for all, love of the land, And even though you are no longer with us, God Bless You Israel for all that you have done, and continue to do. I am crying as I am typing this, but the lesson Israel thaught me “We are only here for a short time, make it count!!!” Mahola Nui. Nancy

Hello–unfortunately, I did not really discover this artist until a couple of months after his passing in 1997, when a world music radio program here in Seattle broadcast a couple of his songs. I had seen some of his cd’s in various stores, but I hadn’t heard his voice before, with these gorgeous long, high notes that go straight through your heart. I hope to check out more of his songs in the near future. Thanks!

My wife and I have just seen the movie Finding Forrester and were spellbound to hear Over the Rainbow and What a Wonderful World. We immediately went to purchase the soundtrack and the only song we listen to on that soundtrack is Israel’s Over the Rainbow. I have just discovered his music and am saddened to hear of his death. Yet, be comforted by the fact that his music reaches beyond the confines of this life and have brought much joy to me and my wife. We are going to purchase his albums and get better acquainted with this “refreshing” and “soulfully pure” sound. The intimacy he creates on this recording is astounding. There is only one other singer, Nat King Cole, who can accomplish this same intimacy. What a beautiful soul he must have been. Again, our heartfelt condolences. John & Myra Remmel

Although the parents and the girls loved the music, no one really knew who the artist was until yesterday. After looking at this web site, it is a happy thought that IZ’s music will be heard throughout all the competitions, from Las Vegas to Milwalkee. Bruddah Iz…Gentle Giant he was. A Legacy known to all who knew him and his music. His love and MANA’O was expressed in his music and could be felt by everyone. The beauty of knowing him was that he meant everything he said. He reached out to so many people and touched so many lives, and in that path he touched mines. He made me realize that there is more to life than what I perceive it to be. He IZ and always will BE my HaYnSuPaMaN! SUPE!!! May his life live on in the hearts of everyone! Aloha!

I was visiting Los Angeles, California last week and saw the movie “Finding Forrester.” I found myself staying to the very end, through the credits, because of Mr. Israel Kamakawiwo’ole’s rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” His music touched my soul.

I just found today that Mr. Kamakawiwo’ole passed away in 1997. It breaks my heart to know that the world has lost such a talented wonderful artist. May he rest in peace.

What a beautiful song. Facing future. I hear it often and yet did not know who performed it. Monday night they played again on Gideons Crossing and the information was posted on the Website.

Thank you Israel for sharing your creativity with us. It will last until the end of time.

I am grateful that his spirit ilves on forever through his music, bringing more people together than he may ever had imagined. Dearest Family:

We live on the Mainland, but my family still lives in Honolulu and we love our Hawaiian music, especially recordings from Iz and his brothers.

We just got back from seeing the movie, “Finding Forrester” and heard the recording of Iz singing “Over The Rainbow” at the movies conclusion. We realize your loss is probably still fresh, the scar healing, but never forgotten. We too miss him, but he lives on.

We shall see, hear and enjoy him again in another life.

God bless you,

Chris & Linda Townsley

Saw Finding Forrester and once again came across Mr Kamakawiwo’ole’s incredible version of Over The Rainbow/What A Wonderful World. I first heard about this musician on National Public Radio and could never remember his last name. This time I payed attention. I’m so glad I finally found this and other sights about “IZ”. He must have been a lovely man besides a wonderful and creative musician. I look forward to hearing more of his music!

I just discovered IZ yesterday. I immediately went to the internet to find out more about him and was saddened to learn of his death a few years ago.

All I can tell you is that listenting to the CD “Facing Forward” in Borders Bookstore yesterday made me happy. I listened to the whole CD and was totally captured by what was obviously a very beautiful soul.

I know that this comment is very late but I still send my very real condolances.

It was sad to hear that our greatest musician and well- known legendary Hawaiian man had passed on. I will always remember him through his beautiful and harmonic music that he had composed. I have grown up with his music during my childhood times and until present. He is still alive with his music and memories of him. “E ala e”, “Kaleohano”, and “Kamalani.” These are my favorite songs that I really enjoyed to listen and relaxed with. I know in his spiritual life in heaven, he is creating more music and many concerts like he has done here. E malama pono aku e palala o IZ.

As I was working at our shop at North Maui Beach (Tazmanian Towing), when Bruddah Iz passed, I heard the news on the radio I was overcome by a very deep sadness and loss. I have visited Hawaii, Oahu only, three times in the past year. Thanks to the voice, music, words of Iz, I have begun to learn something of the land and people that we haoles of the mainland rarely are privileged to encounter. Iz opens a door through the external Hawaii into the interior which is a song of the heart. What I feel sometimes is that Iz has become one of Hawaii’s akua. He has inspired me to try to learn what I can of the Hawaiian language and to be one of those who speaks for the rights of the Hawaiian people. I found this word: kahu: and it says it means guardian and also to kindle fire. If that is right, then that for me is Iz and his music… that he is a guardian of his people and his islands, and that he kindles fire in the hearts of all of us. And he teaches also “Ua mau ke ea o ka aina ika pono.” And if I am a haole wahine living in the mountains of Tennessee and I have learned all this from Iz in one year and three visits, then people should know he lives on, he teaches, and his song is the great song of us all, and the great heart of the world.

Thank you for letting me share this.

Bruddah IZ:

You have been with me everyday since I heard your beautiful voice for the first time only two months ago. You were indeed too beautiful for this world but I thank you and our Creator for bringing you here so that we could be touched by your magical essence. Your voice and music are like soothing, healing balm upon my soul. I have shared your music with my people and hope that they are touched by even a fraction of the way that I have been. Hawaii is a beautiful land and you represent the epitome of what Hawaii is. I love you bruddah IZ and wherever you are I hope you can feel the love that we send your way, just as we can feel the love you have left behind. Mahalo

Iz’s music has touched my heart like no other. Allthough I am Haoli, and do not understand Hawiian language, I blast his CD in my car, and sing the words at the top of my lungs as if I were Hawiian. My family laughs at me as I sing along, but they know that IZ has brought Hawaiian to my heart and way of life. If I could I could say anything to Israel, I would tell him that his music has made me a better person, less judgemental, more caring of loved ones. IZ, you are my spiritual brother. I pray that you watch over me and help me to enjoy my life, and to be greatful for all that I have. We miss you brudda!!!

I only recently met Iz’s sould through his music. I cannot tell you how devastated I was to know that the gentle giant who pierced my soul is no longer walking among us. I have been collecting all of his music that I can. There are many people who perform his music, but when he sings, my sould vibrates like the string of a cello when bowed. To the Dear Family & friends of Bruddah Iz,

My deepest condolenses to you, the family of Israel. I was deeply saddened today to see that Iz had passed away. I also was saddened to hear about Skippy. This morning I awoke with Hawaii on my mind and in my heart, remembering the Aloha spirit we were blessed with when we met all of the lovely locals at the Seaview Inn in 1978-79 on one of our first trips to the island. The Sons of Makaha were playing and a group of us from Canada were invited by Kila & Al and some regulars at the Inn and we will always remember them and all of you for those incredible memories of the Aloha of all of you. Then I saw the sad news when I was trying to look up the “Seaview Inn” to contact those friends if they are still there. I lost my husband also, and my heart is with you all, Love Donna & Tanisha Parker,Alberta,Canada
