My husband and I had our first Hawai’i vacation this past November 2008. One day we woke up to Somewhere Over the Rainbow,Wonderful World sung by IZ, from that day on the song has been stuck in my head! We bought his cd that it’s on before leaving Hawai’i. I listen to that song every day because makes me both sad and happy. It makes me sad because he is not with us today, but it also makes me happy because we know he’s happy and we know where to find him. I wish I would have heard of him when he was alive, I wish I had gotten a chance to see him perform, and help him any way I could. I recently got laid off and have nothing but time now. Hello,

Just wanted to say that although I never knew of IZ while he was with us and I only discovered his music while watching the credits to the movie Fred Clause I just want to say that when I hear Over the Rainbow it makes me feel safe and despite all that is going on here in the U.S. with the resession and the war his music cuts through all that and grabs a hold of your heart and just makes you feel like everything will fall into place makes you feel like everything is going to be alright. Yesterday I was driving, listening to Over the Rainbow Wonderful World (loud), the first version from Ka ‘Ano’i. I stared to hear that I had a musician accompanying the music. A cricket had gotten into my car and was singing and chirping away louder than the music. I made a stop and the cricket stopped. When I got going again and the song starting playing, the cricket started right back up and sang the rest of the way home. Even the crickets love IZ!

To those close to the late IZ I have recently acquired CD ‘Facing Future’, 15 songs by IZ ISRAEL KAMAKAWIWO’OLE, and I am an instant fan. The quality of depth, sincerity, and unique indigenous feeling from the voice of an Hawaian lover of his birthplace and culture trandscends time and reaches the ears and minds of all who listen. My wife passed away on July 3, 2008, and a friend told me I should listen to a song by a Hawaiian named Bruddah IZ, called In Dis life. I can’t begin to describe how powerful that song is and how it affected me. I heard it over and over and over again and just sat there crying because IZ sings it with such feeling and it is exactly how i feel about my wife. I bought two of his cd’s shortly after and enjoyed then tremendously.

I used that song in an online memorial I made for my wife, and i also did a YouTube tribute using that song. angelica-reyes.virtual-memorials.com

Gone but never forgotten. May our angels look down on us knowing how much we love them and miss them.

As a musician for more than 40 years I am always touched by this mans version of Over the Rainbow, when ever I hear it. This weekend I taught my self Bruddah IZ’s version of the song. I was in Honolulu in May of 2007 with my now ex wife. At that time, I already pretty much knew things were over but the trip was planned so I went along. On the way back from Germaine’s Luau, our bus guide brought out a small ukelele and played a couple of songs, giving full credit to Bruddah Iz. Something about the tone and life in them really stuck with me and I’ve cherished at least that one memory of what was a sad trip overall. I rather recently heard of Bruddah IZ’s music on, of all things, Totonto’s commercial classical music station. I couldn’t spell his name but, when I searched Limewire, I was able to find a few of the songs he had written. What a voice! What a genius! Somewhere Over the Rainbow is the best version or that incompariable song that I’ve ever heard! I’m sorry that I came so late to his music but, it will live forever especially in the the hearts of Hawiaan people who actually knew him and for future generations, yet to come.

Yesterday I sended a to short commend, because of technical problems. Now, I try again and to explain my commend. I am living in Belgium, Flemisch region (Flanders), 30 kms from the birthplace of Father Damian, who spended his life in Molokai. For to be honest, like most Belgians, I knew only a little bit of Oceania and the Polynesian culture. In 2002 in a trip around the world I stayed with my son and my nephew a few days in the Cook Islands. There we learned the Polynesians as the most friendly people we have ever met. I was touched by the way of finding great solutions for complicated problems like the vaste distances in the country and the little economic possibilities of the remote islands, they are realy great managers. I have seen the spirituality of the Maori people who treat their land as a kind of holy ground. On every inch of the soil I felt the ancestors. The Cook Islanders are always in a good mood, and visitors become also happy. Polynesia is so beautiful as paradise and the people have a kind of spirit of a God. That spirit still lives in our hearts so far away on the other side of the world.

Since then I searched on Internet about the Cook Islands and the other countrys in the huge triangle of Ao Tea Roa, Hawaii and Rapa Nui and I wondered that the Polynesian culture became in the 14 th century the most expanded homogene culture in the world!

With the internet I was surprised about the quality of the websites in Polynesia! It is a blessing to have such a communication tool when you live in such a vaste part of the world. I am happy to see initiatives like the Polynesian University and the language translators on line. You are proud on your culture and that is a real good thing. A lot of European people do not understand the necessity to defend their own culture, and this is unforgivable.

Not only the websites are good, I have seen 4 fantastic Polynesian movies. A very nice and deep touching movie is Paikea from Ao Tea Roa. Even people who have never been in Polynesia and can not so good follow the spirit of the movie, were crying because it was so touching. At that year, in 2005 4 heavy hurricanes hitted Niue and the Cook Islands. I felt very sad, but I recognised happiness when I saw on internet that within 24 hours 300 volunteers from Ao Tea Roa landed in Rarotonga to help the people there. And still they stay laughing. What a courage. That is the spirit of Polynesia. And that spirit I recognised on You Tube when I saw Bruddah IZ singing Hawaii Aloha and the people singing and dancing together hand in hand. It is so touching that I got tears in my eyes. You, Hawaiians, have the greatest dame in history, Queen Liliuokalani. Like your Queen I want to say Aloha Oe, till we meet us one day. IZ has the spirit of Hawaii and touches very much people, not only in Hawaii, but over whole the world. It is heartbreaking to know that he is gone on earth, but his spirit, his songs stay alive forever. And I say to you and to all cultures under pressure, stay singing, stay dancing, because, if people do not sing anymore,they fade away and die.

This is the most beautiful song I have heard.My step daughter was in the columbine shooting and she survived. Only to have died a few years later before the age of 25. They played this song when they had the columbine memorial and launched the balloons and doves. I usually dont cry but this song made me cry like a baby. And it reminds me of my stepdaughter. They also had this for Emily’s parade sept 27,2008 to comemorate all the victums of all the school shootings this past year.In that rally there were over 3,000 motorcycles and believe me of all these tough bikers there was not a dry eye there.

There are no words to say how much this man had soothed my beast within referencing his music. When I was in Hawaii I could not believe such wonderful music and a soft voice came from such a big man. I guess it’s been 15 years since I last visited the Islands but I can assure you when I left I was not the same person as when I came. I truely wish the world had more people containing the soul and inspiration that Iz was able to impart to people. His Over The Rainbow still to this day brings tears to my eyes when I hear it as it reminds me of my Father who died in 2007 from lung cancer. Over the rainbow was his favorite song and I can remember him singing it to me as a child. I believe Iz was a prophet from God to the people on earth. In one encounter I was completely transformed by his heart. He and I were born in the same year and he passed exactly on my daughter and grandmothers birthday. I lament that I can’t see him, that he lived and died and I was unaware of his life up til now. I became a fan so late because I have never heard of Iz s music until the end title of the movie Meet Joe Black which I saw the year it was released. From that time since I heard Over the Rainbow It’s a Wonderful World I became an instant fan.

It’s so sad to find out that he had passed away before the movie was made. But having it played there was in itself an honor to his memories. From now on I am going to find the songs he had sang in the past as much as I can.

I thought that Mr. Israel might have a website that was run by family and or friends so that I may ask what I needed, but I now realize that he had many friends and family and I can just ask what I wish now. My name is Jane Jenny Price & I am asking the blessing of whoever reads this to allow my sister Amy to use Israel, IZ, version of Somewhere Over The Rainbow during her wedding on 080208. My mother only tonite told me that she wanted to hear this during her wedding & I only now revealed that this song meant so much more to me than my sister could ever know. I had a baby on 120407 and she was 15 weeks premature, weighing only 1 lbs 7oz and no one thought she or I would live. But I would hear Mr. Isreal’s version of this song and somehow know that no matter what happened, life was what it should be. My baby girl, Stella, is now almost 7mths old and my 2nd greatest accomplishment, alongside her 11 yr old brother Chase. I would just like to have your blessing to use Mr. Israel’s song at my sister’s wedding. It shocked me to hear that this was one of her favorite songs, as it was mine, when we had been at odds for so many years. The American Cancer Society Los Altos (CA) Relay For Life was held on June 21-22 2008. The theme was Over the Rainbow. The Bruddah’s rendition wafted over the field several times in 24 hours. When I first heard Israel’s version of Somewhere Over The Rainbow a couple of days ago on the radio, it literally touched my soul, it stayed with me until I found it. I felt overwhelmed with sadness and all I could do is cry. For the past 2 days, I felt compelled to play this song over and over again. I remember the first time that I heard the song, Over the rainbow by IZ and how I was so fasintated by his version of the song. But, it was so much more than that. When I heard the song, I had at that time never been to Hawaii until a few years later. It was odd because I never thought that I would visit there however, after island hopping to Maui I was at the beach and decided to get a drink at this little bar near the shore. I just got finished swimming and decided to get a lava flow. By chance, I heard that song that I had heard on the radio back on the mainland. My heart sunk as I heard the music, for it was almost as if he had set the stage for me that one day I would be able to go visit Hawaii. I did at the most crucial time in my life because I had been depressed over a breakup and needed some joy badly. I remembered the song and went immediately to the ABC store nearby and purchased that CD of him singing. I now play it all the time and it makes me remember my joy. There is something unexplainable about him and his incredible spirit for EVEN after his death he affects others with his spirit. I now have my joy back after that trip and I can’t tell you how much my life has changed because of that day. It’s as if he had spoke to me somehow to say, it’s going to be ok for you are loved. Everyone is loved and that is why the rainbow within that song is so important. It includes all, no matter who you are, no matter where you’ve been and no matter what will happen. Thank you IZ for giving me my joy back with just one simple song. I wish that I could have met you before you left us but then again, in a way……I did!!! Love, light and laughter to all Greg

My husband and I discovered the music of Iz in early 1998 when we visited our time-share which we purchased in 1994 in Kahana Villa, Maui. Our daughter and her 9-month-old son were with us when we heard his music on the Maui radio station. We drove to the station and she went up and asked about the music. We have since purchased all of his music, including those recorded earlier with the group. I can’t begin to tell you how much we regret his early demise and wish all the best to his wife and daughter. All four of our children have purchased his CDs, and we’ve shared them with many friends. He will always be remembered through his beautiful voice and his love of life and especially of his beloved Hawaii.

Since Jason Castro performed Somewhere Over The Rainbow and talked about the amazing Bruddah Iz, literally millions of Americans have checked it out on the Internet and I haven’t seen one comment that was anything short of fantastic! I, myself, listen to the song at least 10 times a day. I am so thankful that I now know of him and his music, and although his life was too short, the beautiful and powerful message he left will never be forgotten!

I was born on the island of Kauai in 1963. Nine days after I was born my mother died and my father and I left the islands leaving behind 3 half brothers and 2 half sisters. 38 years later I boarded a plane met up with my brothers on the Big Island flew to kauai and visited my mother’s grave for the first time in my life. When I left to go back to the mainland my brother gave me several IZ cd’s. I was so moved and touched by his music and the MESSSAGE it contained, 3 years later I quit a great job and moved to the Big Island. Your music changed my life at the very lowest point in my life. I heard Somewhere over the Rainbow while in a drug rehab clinic not by my choosing, and after a suicide attempt. The year was 1999 and it was a Wednesday at 3 pm and your voice mesmerized me and changed me.

When I first heard IZ sing I was drawn to the sound of his voice. I ordered the DVD and played for my granddaughters, ages 2 & 3, they began dancing and trying to sing Over The Rainbow. They too were drawn to him. I then began my search to know more about IZ and the more I read about this man, the band, the history of Hawaii -well I believe he was and still is a very special person with a special gift to share with the world. The very frst song that I heard IZ sing was Hawaiian Superman…………. My family and I took our first trip to Hawaii in 2004 and fell in love with the music of brudda IZ. It is now 2008 and I listen to him daily and his words brings peace to my own soul. I want to return to the islands and give back to the hawaiian’s people. I want to help,laugh and listen, they are truly the greatest people I ever met in my life. We sat on a private beach eating and talking, and as they were wanting to know about us we as well were wanting to know them. We spent many hours meeting members of their village. Three months ago I gave birth to twin girls. They both had some colic issues. I was looking up the Artist for Over The Rainbow, from the soundtrack of 50 First Dates, and was saddened when I found out the Bruddah Iz passed away at such a young age. He is a very inspirational person and will still be missed.
