We miss brother Iz. He was the most important Hawaiian we knew and we live with his music every day. We attended his last concert at the Shell and wondered if a video of that concert will be available. We would like to see anthologies of his work on the market such as a collection of love songs or his Hawaiian superman songs. We look forward to his next album. Hope his family is doing well.

The first time we heard the muic of “IZ” we were in a small shop in Captain Cook, Big Island. A song from his album “Facing Future” was playing on the radio in the backround. His clear and simple message reached out and grabbed my soul. The haunting and sad story he was telling about Hawaii as it was and as it is hit hard. His message was not bitter. He just wanted people to know what had happened and not to forget that history and values should never be forgotton. We went to see Iz at a concert in Waikoloa. The concert featured a number of younger artists that IZ wanted to help. The man himself appeared later in the evening. You could fel the love everyone felt for him. The keiki (kids) idolized him and respected his concern for their futures. It was a night we will never forget. At the end of the concert, we waited to meet him and shake hands. He was kind and as patient as his songs. It didn’t matter that we were haoles. His passing breaks our hearts but his message of Aloha made the world so much richer.

I am also a Hawaiian musician and sound engineer. Once while I was running sound at the 50th State fair. We were fortunate to have the Makaha sons of Niihau that year. And the next night I remember Israel coming to drop off Hawaiian food for us. Man if that’s not the true meaning of Aloha. I’ll always remember that night and Israel.

Bruddah IZ the ultimate Hawaiian super man will always live in our hearts as a hero. Bruddah IZ you taught me what it is to show ALOHA and to be Hawaiian.Icame from the mainland and I wanted to leearn about my Hawaiian culture. I wanted to learn because Ialways felt out of place on the mainland being around all the haoles and papolos. But tou taught me why I should really learn. Because I am hawaiian and if I don’t no about my culture I don’t know about myself. And showing ALOHA isn’t just about being nice to strangers is about takeing care of the aina and taking responsibbility for our kuliana. And most important respecting yourself.

My first and only exposure to Mr. Israel’s music was while listening to an NPR story of his death in July, 1997. I thought his voice was the most beautiful I’d ever heard. What a tragedy his death brings for those who knew and loved him. Now I will search for his music, and perhaps, if I’m lucky draw close to his heart.

I am a great fan of Bruddah Iz!!!! He lives on within all the hearts of the people of Hawaii; and he surely lives on within me. Here in college at Washington State College his music has given me great confidence. While writing papers for my english class, my topics have always been someway related to either the unjust history of my native Hawaiian ancestors or Hawaiian sovereignty; and I always listen to his music which makes me cry. His music, his words remind me that Hawaii and it’s people are fragile; and if I a kanaka moali doesn’t do anything about the suffering our `aina and people have been exposed to then our `aina will die and our people will become extinct. Thank you Bruddah Iz for your inspiration. You will be legend in my heart. A legend I will share with my children; music I will pass on to them. Memories of you will live on FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!! much love and aloha to you, his family, and much, much more love and aloha to you, Bruddah Iz. Shayna Kitty Ka`imilani Ashley

Bruddah IZ will always be remembered. For many of us who live in the mainland, through our own musical groups, I/we will continue spreading his music. As was stated by Iz, we are not to feel sad, his passing as with many of the isle musicians before him will be just another journey of life. Can you imagine the band members that he has now joined; Skippy, Alfred Apaka, Pops Pahinui, etc. What a jam session that would be. Anyway from all of us here in Juneau, Alaska, Aloha Bruddah IZ, we’ll miss you, but we know we will see up there later….Kimo

I was told in the “good book” that heaven is a beautiful place, and now you get to see the beauty, to be free, and “FLY WITH ANGLES.” Please tell my brother “KIMO” that we miss him, watch over him until we all meet again in Heaven. Thank you for your music and songs, for it has truly inspired my life, and has made me as a “Hawaiian” to appreciate this paradise we call home. Aloha As all the good things about Hawaii seem to dissapear this is an even greater loss for our community. IZ gave so much, and his music will keep reminding us of the mission to keep this place the way it is meant to be. There are not many left like IZ and if we do not watch out it will all be gone soon. We never know what we have till it is gone it seems – keep listening to him and you will always be reminded what it is we are here for – not to take, make money, steal and make big business – but to care for each other and to give aloha. This is the greatest loss to Hawaii, it is time for change now. Give back the land already, no Hawaiians, no Aloha. We will be stuck only with the memory of better days, even though we can still do something to stop what is happening here. The people make this place, not big buildings, not big hotels, not big business. E ala E. Aloha brother IZ – hope you are in a better place.

Two years ago, while on a business trip I stayed at the Hawaiian Village, and after their sunset ceremony as we were waiting for the show to begin, I heard the voice of Iz over the loudspeaker as they played Hawaii ’78 and then Country Road. The message was loud and clear and the voice clear, beautiful and intent. It changed my whole experience of Hawaii and its peoples. I hear his voice in my head often, and when I don’t know what I want to hear, I put George Khuo and Iz on a mix on the CD and it is always, just right.I will miss this shining star but I know he is in his Hawaii now. Thank you for this opportunity to be able to share my memory and grief. My condolences to both, his immediate and world-wide family.

Bruddah Iz has always blessed my heart in the Hawaiian way. Not ashamed to show his love and gratitude for the lands as well as his family. Bruddah Iz was always a positive inluence and impact on my life. He taught me a lot about respect and to be appreciative for what the Hawaiians have now. Everytime I listen to him sing or talk, I get the chicken skin. But I always take his words to heart. The words he sings and says have so much meaning and expresses nothing but the truth. I heard Iz’s latest CD for the first time when I returned to Maui because my father had just passed away. The songs on that CD bring out so many emotions in me; several of those songs speak to me and my mom because they deal with loss and moving on… My mom played the CD just about nonstop; it helped both of us in our grief. I’ve always loved Iz and his music, and I know it will live on for a very long time. As with my father, I know Iz is now at peace and is no longer in pain.

Bruddah Iz played at our Christmas party in 1994. I work at Aloha Airlines and I remember his performance vividly. He made an unreal impression on me that night because it was the first and only time I ever saw him play his music; first time I ever saw the man in person. What caught me off guard was that the man was totally down to earth. He spoke of childhood stories and even told jokes (of the adult nature, I might add) in between his songs. He talked to the entire ballroom like he was talking to his best friend. Then, he would jump into a song (like White Sandy Beach or Sea of Love) and just mesmerize the entire audience with his smooth, everlasting voice. His voice is classic Hawaiian. I will always remember where I was on June 26 when I first heard the news like how I remember where I was when I heard that Elvis was gone or the Challenger exploded. His passing affected me in a way I never thought it could. To his family, much aloha. I will always listen to his music and smile.

I bought Israel’s latest CD “N Dis Life” in early June after returning from a Hawaiian vacation. I had never heard of Israel or his music before, but I was longing for some true Hawaiian music that captured the spirit of the islands and the Hawaiian people. I found such music in Israel’s CD and have listened to it over and over again in the last 2 months and have enjoyed it immensely. I was very saddened to read here of his death. Someone quoted in an article that the world was just getting to know more about Hawaiian music and culture because of Iz. He certainly touched me. I’m very sad he won’t be here to make more of that beautiful music.

Hawaiians always give from the heart. Iz was a perfect example of that. I was able to see some of the tribute that was aired on TV (thru video). Hawaiians again giving from their heart. Iz n dis life you gave so much to the Hawaiian people . Alot of mainland people don’t understand how come the Hawaiian people can be so nice or giving, its just that aloha spirit. Our culture is special and Iz showed others just how special. Aloha bruddah.

His music will always be a part of me. His sense of humor. His aloha spirit. The way Bruddah IZ played his ukulele will always be with me. In a sense, he will never be apart from me. Although right now I cannot shake his hand or give him a hug or thank him in person for all his beautiful music. Bruddah IZ will always there, in melody, and in memory.

You have left behind a lot of love and inspiration. But the main thing you left and gave so freely was faith. Faith to beleive that the Hawaiian people do matter and have a right to speak-out. Hawaiians do have a responsibility to care for thier children and bring them up right. With love and kindness you gave hope and belief that all things are possible through JESUS CHRIST and to those who believe. I LOVE YOU WITH ALL MY HEART AND THANK YOU FOR YOUR NEVER ENDING “SPEAKING FROM THE HEART” AND TELLING IT LIKE IT “IZ.” ALOHA AND MAHALO NUI LOA Christine Stier Slidell Louisiana (Kauai born & raised)

I happened to come upon this page while viewing the Hawai‘ian community. It’s been a while since the passing of this extroardinary man. When I heard the news from my wife, she was in tears, as was myself. This man was an icon in the Hawai‘ian community. Not only in the islands, but here where I reside in the Bay Area. Our canoe club, Kamali‘i ‘o Ke Kai, and the Northern Outrigger Canoe Association, paid tribute and dedicated one regatta to Bruddah Iz. Seeing him in concert was a special privilage. His kind and soothing voice will be greatly missed.

I was at Iz’s concert at Marin Civic Center, CA, Oct. 19, 1996. I was happy to see Iz and his spirit shone forth, but the reality of his physical being was frightening. It was amazing to see him perform and joke around with such enthusiasm when he was so burdened. Perhaps the burden he carried was the weight of 200 years of oppression of his people. I pray often for the freedom and progress of his soul. And you’re wrong dear Iz- you will live forever, and forever we’ll be loving you.

I’m a haole boy from Iowa. I first heard of Iz in a CD shop in Chicago the week before his death. I was about to leave for a 3-week vacation to Hawaii, and sampled some of the Hawaiian music the store had available for listening, including “n dis life” Something about the music of Iz affected me deeply in a way I couldn’t quite pinpoint. It happened we were making our second trip to the islands on the day Iz died; I got off the plane to see the headline “IZ DIES”. It seemed like too much; this musician I’d just heard of the previous weekend was gone on the day I was visiting his home. Anyway, I spent three weeks in the islands and was witness to the great outpouring of aloha in the wake of Iz’ passing. Iz’ music has opened up a world of music that gives me an appreciation of the islands at a much deeper level than I ever would have known otherwise. I just want to say “mahalo” for Iz and the way he has touched my life.

I only heard of IZ passing on the National Public Radio news, after buying his new album over Memorial Day weekend. A store in Waimea was playing it, and I new I had to have that album! Found it the next day somewhere, and I only wish I could have heard him Live. Anyone who has been privileged to hear his music will miss him deeply. Now I hope to find and hear more of his recordings. I especially liked the broad mix of music styles on N Dis Life, and hope some of the other albums have a range of styles also. It can never happen now, but I’d gladly make a trip from San Jose to Hawai`i anytime to hear IZ performing. It feels as though I actually knew him personally. My wife also loves the music. Thank you for providing this memorial web site – a great tribute and a great idea! — Larry B.

Aloha, Kamakawiwo’ole ‘Ohana… Many days have gone by since Hank’s Place in Kaimuki where I first met Skippy, Israel, and ‘ohana. My father, Bo, helped Hank get the place going, and I frequented the restaurant/ lounge to hear what I considered the most awesome group of Hawaiians alive. We were all so kolohe in them days, spending many of the breaks between sets cruising (among other things – smile) right there at the front door as people came in. It was a great time. When Skippy died, my heart was sore for a long time. He and his brother made a heavy impression on my heart. Having Israel “there,” wherever there was, made for a great deal of peace. However, life went on, and I went on my way, and I hadn’t seen any of the gentlemen for many years. I was surprised, at one point in time, to find out that Iz and Andy and I (Andy Sexton – Simplisity) share an apartment in that circle condo building across from Pacific Grand in common (we moved in after Iz moved out). I was able to see more of Iz, but not too much more, when I became involved with Andy, and I must admit I bragged several times about having shared times in the past with the Kamakawiwo’ole brothers (smile). There is a group of seven interns being sponsored by ALU LIKE, Inc./Native Hawaiian Vocational Education Program in collaboration with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories here in Livermore, California. We are doing a telecommunications networking/environmental protection technologies internship here at the lab with the intent of coming back to Hawai’i and sharing the mana’o with our people. Although we were thousands of miles away from our paradise home, we received word the very same day. To say the least, I lost it. We all did. I think I grieve mostly because I became so consumed with trying to catch up with life after having partied so much in earlier days that I didn’t keep in touch with all of Iz’s contributions to our existence as a people. For that, I feel the loss especially. Nevertheless, praise the Lord for bringing Bruddah home to Him. Our aloha to all of you. We wish you Godspeed.

Words cannot express the sorrow the people of Hawai’i has endured due to the loss of such a beloved man. She did have a chance to attend the funeral with her grandmother & uncle ‘Skippy’ Lewis. For me, the Makaha sons were always my favorite group simply because of their unselfish desire to perpetuate their culture through their music. I was born and raised in Hawaii – my first 23 years were spent in the Islands, my second 23 in Marin County, CA, just north of San Francisco( the two most beautiful places on earth as far as I am concerned). I have never been a big follower of Hawaiin music…but over the years, away from Hawaii, and seeing the many changes when I return home, I have longed for something that could capture the soul and essence of Hawaii for me – Israel and his music has done that like no other. While I never had the opportunity to see him in person, his music has brought the beauty and heart of Hawaii to me, to my kids, and to my friends (some who never ever liked Hawaiian music before). I shall miss him dearly, and hold him softly in my heart. Beky

I only just learned of IZ’s death while browsing the newsgroups (7/12/97). I am shocked and saddened. I had never heard of Iz until my only visit to Hawaii. I was incredibly lucky to blunder into a fabulous Iz concert – the highlight of the Ho’olaulea festivities 9/20/96, in front of the Hawaiin Waikiki Beach hotel where I stayed. I was moved to tears by Iz’s Hawaii ’78, only to have my spirits soar during his closing song (I still do not know the name or album). Iz’s music can really push buttons. I bought my first Iz CD that night, and my second one at his Marin County California concert in San Rafael (a mere 12 miles from my house!). To me, IZ IS HAWAIIN MUSIC! With his passing, Hawaii and the world has lost a great talent and a great ambassador. As saddened as I am to here of his death, I am grateful for my incredible good fortune to have seen two performances in the last year of his life. I am grateful for the wonderful works he has contributed to the world. I am sure there are other Hawaiin musicians today; I am sure there will be more in the future; but I am sure there will never be another IZ. THANK YOU, IZ – I will miss you.

I remember when I first moved to this island in 1979, I went to Hank’s place with a friend – I’d heard the Makaha Sons of Niihau on the radio and was so touched by their music. I felt as though they had the voices of angels. While my favorite song since living in these islands was Kuu Home Kahaluu, my favorite group was always the Makaha Sons. I actually think I provoked Israel one evening at Chucks Steak House at Mililani. I begged, pleaded. and begged some more for them to please play Star of Gladness, and I think they finally did after I threw fits. In my 18 years in Hawaii nei, I’ve seen those people more than any other… Israel Kamakawiwoole touched my life, his music will be with me for the rest of my life, every time I hear his voice in music I’m just touched beyond anything I’ve ever felt. Aloha

Although living in California now, I am constantly hunting around local music stores to find any of his CD’s. I finally have a connection that sends me his music from Maui. He will sorely be missed , but never forgotten. His music will live on through us to our children to thier children. I may not have been born Hawaiian but I’m a true Hawaiian at heart.

I was fortunate enough to see Iz’s last big concert, at the Waikiki Shell, put on by Duane Oyama and The Bomb. Iz appeared strong, the music was incredible and yet I had the feeling it might be the last time I saw him perform. It was a total chicken-skin experience, with the overhead screen showing pictures of Iz and Skippy as children, of the original Makaha Sons, etc. And then when his wife danced it was enough to bring tears to your eyes. His music will live on, as will his incredible spirit and insight. God bless. (“Starting all over again, it’s going to be tough, but I know we’re going to make it.”)

I’ve only known Israel for about a year now and now the stuff memories are made of will cease. Today is July 10th and I just found out about Israels passing. I can only say I’m in shock and disbelief. I live in Seattle and discovered Israel via National Public Radio, a special report in which he was a part of. Our first c.d. was Ka Ano’i and we instantly fell in love with the message and the music. I’ve been to the islands many times and have always found something so deeply special about the people and culture that most tourists never have the pleasure of feeling. Israel became the frosting on the cake and inhanced the RESPECT and LOVE of Hawai’i deeper into my soul. His music is so powerful and so pleasing to my being and now I feel a large piece of me missing. That piece is Israel Kamakawiwo’ole. Thank you Iz for making my eyes see so much deeper and my heart know such beauty. God is so blessed to have you in his loving arms and to hear your awesome presence so close to his ear. I miss you my friend and I’m so thankful that that one day when I was surfing the internet, I stumbled onto your chat site and you actually were there and spoke to me. ME, i’m so thankful for that short moment in time and will be thankful that God brought us together for that one moment so I could say, thank you. A fan A friend A brother Rob

I first heard Israel’s music on a local NPR station (Santa Monica-KCRW) and was immediately moved by it. I bought Facing Future and found it to be the most beautiful music I had ever heard, moving me to tears at times. I was born in Honolulu and recently went back arriving two days after he died. I was very upset by this but heartened to see the outpouring of love from the many people who were touched by him and his wonderful music. Even though I never saw him live and only have been listening to his music for a while, I will miss him. From what I have read he was a wonderful man, someone we should all try to emulate. The world needs more people like Israel Kamakwiwo’ole. Mahalo for your music, Israel. I hope you have achieved pure bliss because you appear to have brought bliss to all you have touched, myself included.

I had the priviledge of growing up with Iz in Palolo Valley. I too, lived on 9th ave. I remember sitting out in front of the house with Skippy, Pops, Lydia, who was my classmate at Palolo Elementary and Iz, who was the youngest at the time. We would jam hawaiian music almost everyday, if we weren’t at the park playing volleyball or baseball. I knew something wonderful was going to happen concerning this talented family. Sure enough. I’m very privileged to have spent those good old days with Bruddah and his family I thank you from the bottom of my heart. May you find all the happiness, peace, love and aloha with Akua. Being from the Detroit, Michigan area, we only recently learned of IZ on the NPR radio station. I agree with the commentator, IZ’s singing is magical. We really feel that magic everytime we listen to his recording “Somewhere Over The Rainbow/What a Wonderful World”. We will miss you IZ.

I’m not a long time follower of Iz, in fact I’ve only heard his voice on two occasions. One was last Thursday (my birthday), when I heard on NPR that he had died, which was followed by his version of “Somewhere over the Rainbow.” The sound of his voice was just what I needed at that moment but it was very emotional for me. I determined that I must find and purchase the album (I’m still looking for a store in LA that his CDs in stock). I am not often moved this way by music (the last time was in 1991 when I first heard and then purchased a CD by Iris DeMent), but when I hear something special like Iz’ music, I look forward to holding it close. May he continue to live in our hearts and minds.

What a beautiful voice; what a beautiful spirit. In only last 2-3 weeks, Iz had become a standard on our local public radio station here in Austin, Texas. Then we got word he had crossed on over. Sadness for our loss — joy for his spirit! It seems he sang of the many ways of love, no? Love of family, land, people, hope, truth.

Mahalo, Ed, for setting this page up. I think it was said best, “IZ will always be is and never was”. I got to know Bruddah IZ pretty well in the last year of his life and he meant alot to me. Taught me what ‘aloha’ really is, as he was ‘aloha’ personified. He enriched my life beyond measure as he did many, many others. I will miss him greatly, but I am comforted by the thought that he is at peace now, up there on the ‘big stage in da sky’, jamming wid his brother, Skippy, and all those who have gone before. He is unencombered by his physical problems and is now flying with angels. The man with ‘the voice of an angel’ is now an angel himself. Bruddah Iz was always full of surprises…just when we were wowing over what a wonderful entertainer he was, he’d go and do something to show that he was more than that…he was a very special PERSON! It was sometime about a year ago, Bruddah was on the KITV news for a week long interview special. I was so impressed by what he said that I taped the segment every night, then took it to school to show my 2nd grade students. The kids really took what he said to heart. Then after finding Bruddah’s e-mail address in a Star Bulletin article, I e-mailed him and asked if he would answer a few questions for my students. I remember trying to play it down to the students, preparing them for an anticipated let down, thinking, “he’s too busy for us; he’ll never answer.” He answered before the day was over! When I e-mailed back to say thanks, I put my phone number in the note, saying to call if he’s ever on the Big Island…not really thinking he actually would. That was a Saturday morning. We went out shopping, and wouldn’t you know…when we came home there was a message from Bruddah with a phone number to call him back at. I then met him in Kailua Hale, and e-mailed him every so often…he didn’t answer as often then, and I was going through a lot with my boyfriend having surgeries…Then at the beginning of this school year, Bruddah came down for an Aloha Week concert. I sent notes to all of my old students and a bunch of us went down to see him but was too shame to go talk to him when he first came out. Wouldn’t you know…he goes and announces on the mike, “and Miss Sato, where you? You out dea? and Bruddah Dex, how’s da neck?” Dex and I remember him as an extremely down-to-Earth, humble PERSON-like I said before…a PERSON-the entertainer part was just a small part (baby toe kine). I’ve never met anyone with so much mana and so much aloha. He not only touched our lives, but the lives of my students (no Johnny Mahoes from Miss Sato’s classes…dat’s fo’ sua!) Mahalo Bruddah for everything! Come visit once in a while! hehehe

Israel Kamakawiwo`ole, a friend, idol and merry prankster continues to live on each and every time we say his name, think about him and whenever we listen to his music. Iz was such a strong and vital soul I really doubt that he will ever sever his ties with this world completely. Among those who hung out with him online at IzChat, many of us are sure that Bruddah Iz continues to visit…several odd things have already happened that were just his style. I feel so priviledged to have known him, shared time with him and worked on schmall kine projects with him. I can tell you that Iz faced passing on just like he did every other challenge, every day of his life…he was courageous, upbeat, honorable, warm and loving. Iz found something good in everyone he met, problem was, he didn’t have time to meet everybody. No other Hawaiian entertainer gave so much of himself. Even when he could have used a rest after shows, he always insisted on making himself available for his fans, friends and loved ones. Such is the mark of greatness. He was a great man, a good husband, an awesome father and a friend to all. His soul is pure, his energies enormous and his talents limitless. Don’t be surprised if you hear something from him again sometime soon. And remember, time passes quickly, we’ll all be reunited with our favorite Hawaiian before we know it. See ya again soon Iz… Love ya cuz!

My kids called him unkl rachel and he didn’t care. The image of Israel holding my 2 month old son on the balcony of his apartment I will never forget. The contrast of a big strong dark man holding a small fragile white baby every so gently stands out clearly in my thoughts. Israel never forgot where he came from and he knew where he was going. You know, Israel didn’t want anything from anybody but friendship and love. Some of my fondest moments of Israel were when and my sister would interact. They had a sort of understanding amongst them. He was her bestest friend. She wouldn’t bs him and he couldn’t bs her. I feel for Marlene and Ces. Their loss is great and the void shall be healed in time with all the love they are receiving from around Hawaii and the mainland. This is heartbreaking. I have only heard his music a couple of times on public radio. The first time I heard him I was stunned, his singing haunted me, but I missed catching his name. Now the second time, I heard his indescribably beautiful music during his obituary. My symphathy to all of his friends, family, and fans. If his soul were but a hundreth part of the sweetness of his voice, or a thousandth of the depth of his talent, he must have been a truly wondrous man to know.

As a mainlander, I was largely unfamiliar with Iz’s work. A few years ago, the local (L.A.) NPR affiliate started playing his cover of “Somewhere Over The Rainbow/What A Wonderful World” off “Facing Future.” I spent the next few years trying to find a copy of this (or any of his other) CD(s). It took me until the middle of this month to find it. Too late for me to build an appreciate for this great artist while he was alive. To all of you who loved him and his music, I extend my own condolences and my own sense of loss. He will be missed but his music will live on in our memory and through our stereos. Peace.
